Mid Year report card

Seeing that the vast majority of those 41% not defused would be within our danger zone, this would be costly and probably very much so.

Hopefully this area has somewhat improved since Bula came in.
Yes, most are bombs or attacking kicks to the wingers. Costly to drop them.
Bula debuted against Manly.
Before that game our defusal percentage was 54%
From then on its been 63%
Its an area we need a lot of work in. Not just actually catching the ball, but setting up blockers and having people in a defensive mindset around the highball.

2006,7,8,9,10, fast forward to 23..repeated.
The original Ground Hog day.
A hopeful, optimistic "Room for improvement" - but if a direct report would have been "You're on notice"...

Signs of progress but a lack of quality in the squad means we're still dead last. Sheens coaching the team in a way that doesn't suit the players he has, players not knowing what to do on the field. He's coaching us for 2025, not 2023. But still if we had a halfback we'd have 6-7 wins.

I often wonder why the players look lost in times of great attacking opportunity?
Is it a result of not knowing who the coach is?
Are the players getting conflicting messages?
The continual sackings at the club would have everyone walking on egg shells.
Or maybe it’s a simple matter of team selection stability. We all realise the essential element in teamwork is knowing what to expect from your teammates.

I crunched some numbers for a bit of perspective to those claiming we have turned the corner. It must be acknowledged that a lot of these numbers have been skewed a bit by the outlier of the performance in the Cowboys game, but interesting all the same.

  • We have had our fair share of possession enjoying 49.14% of the ball completing our sets at 77% across all 14 games. This is pretty good and isnt too far removed from our opponents returns.
  • In attack, we have made 10 more line breaks, 128 more tackle breaks and 91 more off loads than our opponents over the 14 games. As a team, we have also ran for 117m/game more than our opponents and have scored 41 tries which is almost 3/game.
  • In relation to our general kicking, we have made 101m less per game than our opponents but have returned kicks at a rate of 12m more per game. Our kick defusal though is putrid, at 59% across all 14 games.
  • In defence, having averaged 326 tackles per game, we have recorded 9 less missed tackles as well as 9 less ineffective tackles per game than our opponents across all 14 games. This returns an effective tackle rating of 89% per game. We have let in 55 tries @ 4/game.
  • Our discipline has been good with the team receiving 33 more penalties/infringements than our opponents, representing 2.4 more/game. That said, we have produced 8 more errors across the 14 games than our opponents.
In summary our:
  1. Possession rates are good
  2. Completion rates are reasonably good
  3. Our attack is working for the most part
  4. Our defence is working until we get in our 20m zone
  5. Our discipline is good.
Our only true weakness is pretty much everything involved with kicking - either in execution of or in defence of.

If you took these stats in isolation, you would be forgiven for thinking we have won at least 50% of our games this year, if not more. Returning only 3 wins out of 14 games is totally unsatisfactory given the good stats the team is producing and the individual performances of several members within it. We have to stop the narrative that we are rebuilding and growing. This squad are creating enough opportunities and actually playing well enough to win games of football.

It will be interesting to compare our final 10 games to these opening 14 games at the seasons completion. I suspect we will see substantial drops in all categories due to a combination of player unavailablity, injuries, drops in moral and the positive stats from the Cowboys game being eaten away through an influx of increasingly heavy losses.

Whether we get the spoon or not, this season has been more dissappointing than last year because we are doing enough to win, bar scoring tries. We are playing well enough, but just arent finishing off.
Thank you for the well put together summary of our season so far. I'm sure all the fans are bitterly disappointed with how the season has gone considering the positive hype at the beginning of 2023. In a way the stats show we should be doing better than we are so why isn't this happening ?

Lack of hunger, desire. Players not unsure of how they fit in.

No mate , I mean these guys will request early release due to poor results and poor recruitment
We are building quite a list of
Players that have left
Players that have been told to leave ( feel free to look around )
Players that wish they could leave and a few top ones that are
Players that wish they had never arrived ( just guessing a bit here)

Fact is all good players dream is to play finals and hopefully the GF
They probably feel losing week after week is bad for their careers and future market value
Our Teflon coated CEO placed all his chips on this so called center of "excellence " at Concord thinking it would be a magnet attracting top talent
Well obviously a bad bet

Agree mate , results and top 5 - 8 is attractive , going to a club down the shitter end is always hard for the player except for say Wakeman , plumber or Tigers hats where it lays , if we finished 9 th last year we would be ok to attract a few with the quality we gained like ApI, Papi , Klemmer , Bateman ,

. . . . . . . . and further more, we will let them go and replace them with Neville Nobody or even worse, Nobody at all.
Yep agree , we need to win games to keep good players , and you can’t blame them , so far our pack which has most of our recruites has done. Very well , it’s our half’s and a lacking centre , get that right nobody wants out as we would be going great

I know we been having some banter coz I called you a Debbie downer and you got upset, but that is a good post tuck. The 60 point flogging up’s the stats a bit but generally we’ve been good and often the better side in most games and are still getting beat. We have not turn a corner but that might be the intersection up ahead, but it might be my optimism, maybe you should sprinkle some pessimism around just to bring me down a little.

Optimism at this stage = severe lack of understanding of our situation.
Cowboys will do us by 50 next week and bring the stats back to where they should be.

I agree with this statement, I'm worried about players wanting to leave- it all feels very disrupted at the WT's, with all this talk about someone replacing Luke Brooks, and then you hear that Benji is contacting an ex player to come back eg Jock Madden, why is Benji doing all this stuff, then we hear that Benji is unhappy, all of this media hype whether its correct or not, sort of seems disruptive, and yes why did Offa go to Eels, I thought he seems like one of our better forwards, and I think he was interested in being at WT's....we may end up seeing a mass walkout
