Miller to pair with Marshall

AFTER rejecting approaches from rival NRL and Super League clubs, boom Wests Tigers halfback Jacob Miller is set to get the chance to partner Benji Marshall in the halves.

New Tigers coach Mick Potter said he was yet to decide whether Miller or veteran recruit Braith Anasta would start the season at halfback, but he confirmed Marshall would revert to his favoured five-eighth role.

Former coach Tim Sheens's decision to switch Marshall to halfback and sign Anasta as a five-eighth is understood to have left Miller frustrated about his future at the club and he had been linked to Parramatta, Hull FC and Gold Coast.

But Potter said the Tigers under 20s premiership-winning captain, who played five NRL matches in 2011, was being considered at halfback and Anasta may move to lock.

''Benji is a proven five-eighth, so I would imagine that is where he is going to start the year,'' Potter said.

''Whether that means Braith plays lock and Jacob Miller plays halfback, or Braith plays halfback and Liam Fulton or Adam Blair plays lock, I am not sure.

''I watched the under 20s grand final and I thought Jacob Miller was very handy in that game.

''There is a multitude of options and, at stages during the year, we may need those options.''

Before Potter's appointment on October 24, there had also been speculation about Blake Ayshford's future at the Tigers but the Super League coach of the year said the 24-year-old centre was in his plans for next season.

''I am very happy with the squad that is here,'' Potter said.

''Blake Ayshford and Chris Lawrence are both good centres. The first week of training has been good, the players have been very responsive and very willing. They are all relatively fit and they all want to improve, which is ultimately what we want them to do.''

Another key position yet to be determined is fullback, with Tim Moltzen wanting to settle into the No.1 jersey rather than playing a utility role and James Tedesco returning to action after a knee reconstruction.

Potter said both would be given a chance to stake a claim to the fullback role and indicated that positions on the wing may also be up for grabs.

''James Tedesco has been looking very good at pre-season training and there are some big wraps on him,'' Potter said.

''It was unfortunate in the season just gone for Wests Tigers that he got injured in the first game, because there are some people who say he is going to be a very good fullback. We will get a chance to find that out.

''Tim can possibly play on the edge for you, he can play fullback and at a pinch you could throw him in the halves if you needed to. I think he wants to have a crack at fullback so we will see how he goes early on.''

Curtis Sironen is another player whose best position has not yet been determined and Potter said he would wait until he recovers from a shoulder reconstruction before deciding where to play the 19-year-old.

''At the moment he can't do any contact but he looks very likely and with the skill he has got he can probably play a couple of positions,'' he said.

Potter, who has coached for seven years at Catalans, St Helens and Bradford, described the first week of training at the Tigers as ''steady'' but warned the players it would get harder.

''I wouldn't say it has been an impossible week for them. We are just building them up as we go so,'' he said.

At some stage the training will be difficult and I would say more often that not it will be difficult, but I don't think you want overuse injuries in the first week.

''This week has been solid and then next week and the week after we will build it up.''

Tim Sheens, February 9, 2012: "the versatile Moltzen, who has played mostly at fullback, can flourish in the halves alongside skipper Benji Marshall … he should put current NSW halfback Mitchell Pearce under pressure for his place ... With Moltzen and Marshall, we'll have the fastest halves combination in the game" (http://news.smh.com.au/breaking-news-sport/sheens-calls-on-moltzen-to-target-nsw-spot-20120209-1rr7n.html)

Mick Potter, November 10, 2012: "at a pinch you could throw him in the halves if you needed to"

The contrast between these two coaches is extraordinary

It's all speculation at this stage. As far as i know Miller is still recovering from a post season op and will only hopefully at best be ready for the start of the year. I didn't rate the bloke from the games Ive seen him play over the last couple of years but he did have a good back end of the season and I now think he deserves a chance.

The fact that moltz is even being talked about as an option is a concern

Agreed

Did anyone hear on talking sport the other day about what robbo (I think it was robbo) said of moltzen??
He said he had a reliable source at the club that several players approached sheens saying they weren't happy with moltzen at fb and why he got a contract extension and not them… Then the clean out happined.. To me it goes to show he's not highly regarded by his playing group at fullback..
I'm so happy the boys club will be Brocken up due to potters arrival!!

Arrggghhh leave poor old Timmy Moltz alone.
Sheens rated him, Benji rates him, no doubt his mum rates him, and if former top class fullback Potter is considering him at the back then it sounds like the new coach also rates him …

Reckon Moltzen might be heading for a cracker of a season.

I have however been wrong before.

I would love to be proven wrong on Moltzen. For me 2013 is the crunch time for him. He really needs to be consistent and hit the ground running from Round 1, not from Round 20 like he usually does. With the young talent we have in the fullback and halves, if he doesn't start showing signs of a decent first grader soon then I'd be looking towards these younger guys for the future.

I've been wrong many times before but IMO Timmy just doesn't have the ticker to be a first grader. I don't like the way he blows other players up when they stuff up either. But happy to be proven wrong next season

Potter gives me the impression that any players not playing well or under performing will be dropped unlike what happened this year. I think this will bring the best out of the players as they will know the team is being picked on form and not reputation. So if they are not playing well they'll be dropped and the players in the lower grades who are continually playing well and putting their hand up will be rewarded and promoted to FG.

''Benji is a proven five-eighth, so I would imagine that is where he is going to start the year,'' Potter said.

Finally someone knows what his best postion is.

maybe moltzen is the sort of person who needs a size 12 kicking and some actual criticism to wake him up and get the best out of him. He certainly never seemed to get that under the previous regime.
Play him in reserve grade and IF he shows he's a cut above them then maybe he can go back to being considered for firsts. As it is he is a long way from demonstrating that he should be in the first 17 picked.
Interesting comment about moltzen maybe playing on 'the edge'. Ball boy's are on the edge of the field still…

It was an interesting article. The positive to take away from it is that the fullback role is up for grabs. Its well known that Tedesco grabbed the jumper with both hands at the start of this season through hard work and determination, which he's obviously employing again this off season as he has been reported as the fittest in the squad. IMO the only reason Tedesco won't start at fullback is if he hasn't fully recovered psychologically from his knee reconstruction.

Potter is doing what Sheens was suppose to do years ago, play blokes in their position and put blokes on notice their spot is dependant on form, things will only improve from here.

Ahhh Moltzen….Sometimes capable of saving incredible tries or appearing out of nowhere to grab the flick-pass and score. And then sometimes he just stares, dumbfounded, at the opposition tryscorer right next to him. I don't like him at fullback, he never runs straight up to the line and I can feel his fear of the opposition line through the TV screen. I was really happy with Tedesco, the energy with which he runs the ball and his alertness. If he's fit (in body and mind as Fraze23 pointed out) I don't think Moltzen has a chance at FB. I think softlaw is on the money, Tim may need to go to reserve and work his way back up.
Regarding Miller, I like that he is an aggressive player, in defense and attack. I wasn't impressed with his games in top grade but of course thats an unfair judgement and I'd like to see him start off this year with confidence.
I'm also really happy Ayshford may get another run, perhaps at center. He's a top player who had a bad year.
The thing I liked about Siro at 5/8 was his size. You just don't expect a big guy to come at you from this position when you're playing the Tigers.
Lol, so much talent in key positions, 2013 gonna be a cracker.

A statement from Potter which nobody has yet commented on is that he sees a likelihood that Blair may play lock. Lock is an impotant defensive position and from his cumbersome performance last year I did not see anything to justify him playing there in FG. State Cup, maybe.

Just give him a chance but i think James Tedecso and Jacob Miller will be the fullback and halfback options.

Agreed that's how things should Pam out barring injury

The whole Moltzen things is pretty funny, 2011 before doing his knee people loved him and were willing to rush him back into the top grade for the final series, 2012 rolls around and except for a couple of games he struggled, bearing in mind he was coming off a knee reco job. Durring 2012 he was probably Benji's most prominent target as the rest of the backline looked slow with the exception of Koro late in the season . Now he is the new Fitzy on the forum.

Iam not defending him and I would struggle to find a starting spot for him in 2013 if Teddy come back strong, but he isnt the total dud people make him out to be and when his confidence is up he can be a handy player. Iam sure with injuries we will see lots of Tim in the top grade

Rightfully so - Fitzhenry was a better player than Moltzen…there I said it!

Back on topic it looks like the Sunday Telegraph has done an interview with Braith - in it he says he will make way for Benji, looking forward to having a read tomorrow.
