Minimal Penalties = WIN

Not sure if any of you noticed but during the first 20 min we didn't give away one penalty. We lost the plot a little during the 2nd half giving away penalties and this let Souths back in.

What happened in the last 20? Again we didn't give away a penalty and were able to keep Souths at bay. Staying disciplined will go a very long way in winning games.

Yes with even share of possession we generally perform well. We concede tries off the back of errors, off the back of penalties and off the back of tries. Basically we need to win the possession share to win the game. It's more apparent with us than most sides.

Farah taking control and earning repeat sets will go a long to us winning games too.

Good point, but I get the feeling that's just how the game went. I saw a lot of things we normally get penalised for which were let go tonight.

Still lost the count, and Ashley Klein tried to screw us out of two tries, on top of giving Brycin Goodwin a try when he knocked on.

Refs have a LONG way to go with our team.

Agree with the two tries bit, but a knock on there wasn't in my eyes. I still reckon we get the rough end of the pineapple in the penalty department.

Yeah we got 2…1 was in the 1st tackle of the game...the next in the 61st minute...Were Souths that disciplined...

I agree with underdog Goodwin lost control onto nofos legs then regained possession, that's a knock on in any game!!!

Wasn't there a dropout overruled too? We certainly didn't get the rub of the green which made the win even more impressive.

I would just like to see both teams refereed the same but that will never happen they have there favourite teams and teams they dislike

Well when you're dominating possession and field position and scoring points it's nearly impossible to give away penalties. When the opposition isn't charging at you and getting quick play the balls, then there's no reason to push the limits and give away penalties.

It all depends on what the opposition is throwing at you.

You do not usually get penalised when you have the ball and in the first half we had a glut of possession and completed our sets.

The officials actually kept the teams apart for a change and that also helped our pack build up a bit of momentum when they hit the add line

I think the lack of line speed in the Souths defence played right into our hands. Just that fraction of a second longer to make decisions meant better decisions, less panic and more control = good completion rate.
We started to concede penalties when Souths started to control the ball better and make more metres in attack. It's when our defensive line is under pressure that the penalties come. (And of course, the fact that the refs are expecting us to lose means that they referee the 2 teams differently. We will always cop the rough end of the pineapple in 50/50 calls).

I turned the TV on when we were 20-nil up. Farah took a poor option and gave away a penalty and handed all the momentum to Souths….which we didn't get back until the 60th minute. Nearly cost us the game....I expect more from our marquee and one of our leaders.

Yep - a touchie missed a souths touch despite being about 2 feet away.
The officials didn't really give us anything all night, and we still got the job done. 2 penalties against the rabbits all night despite us having the lion's share of possession (though they evened that up towards the end).

penalties are an indication of the ruck speed

if we win the ruck we'll win the penalty count (usually) because we dont need to slow the ruck down as much

the exception obviously being the chooks in the last few years and being ill disciplined re: high shots etc.

Pleasantly surprised watching the game live to finally see the players not giving away penalties every other set. My question is why doesn't this happen every week there has to be a systemic problem ,this alone puts the team in a winning position .

I say that every time I watch a game, not just a Wests Tigers game either, one side gets reffed different to the other almost every game.

I got the feeling that at 20 to zip in the first 20 minutes of the game, the referees though this is going to be a whitewash we better even it up a bit so Souths got 4 penalties in a row.
