Wests Tigers Coach Tim Sheens says the return of some key players from injury and plenty of hard work will ensure his side gets back on track following the round 20 loss to Manly.
“Today was a setback but St George-Illawarra was a setback a few weeks ago,’’ Sheens said following the 38-20 loss. The loss ended a three game winning streak for the Wests Tigers since the loss to the Dragons in round 16.
“It is about regrouping. We have got a fair injury list at the moment and we are nowhere near as strong as we can be.
"Unitl that changes, I am using the younger guys and veterans and people out of position. We lost our full-back (Wade McKinnon) yesterday in training.
“Sometimes those things happen and you just have to live with it. If you have been in the game long enough, some days it is not meant to be for those reasons. We have got a fairly good list of people sitting on the sideline that will be coming back over the next week or two.
“We are fortunate in that we have got enough points on the board at the moment to not impact us too much other than that its pretty crowded at the moment on the ladder.
“I like to think I will have Beau Ryan, Gareth Ellis would be two. I don’t know about Wade whether it will be another week.It was only a slight twinge yesterday but he has had a history of it before he came here so we need to assess that.”
Sheens said his players would regroup this week and remained focused on the task ahead as they prepare for Cronulla Sutherland Sharks at Leichhardt Oval next Saturday night.
“We are not in the play-offs yet so we have got to work hard over the next month,’’ Sheens said.
“A loss like that today does put a dint in you but we bounced back after St George. We’ve won seven from our last eight so we need to jump back on the horse again and work hard this week.
“Hopefully we will get a little bit stronger with personnel coming back. That will gives us an opportunity to be a bit stronger around the ruck areas where we need to be.”
Five-eighth Benji Marshall said the team must work harder on its defence.
"It was disappointing. We had a pretty good week building up and I thought our preparation was pretty solid,'' Marshall said.
“Our defence let us down today. We know we can score. It is just a matter of stopping them.
“We practised everything they were going to throw at us and they did exactly that. We still couldn't defend it. It is disappointuing. You never like losing."
Marshall said he would continue to put in more hours practising his goal-kicking following another off day with the boot.
“I did a lot of work during the week on goal-kicking. It would be nice if we scored them under the posts,'' Marshall added.
“It is one of those things. I suppose it is like a golfer. You are on one day.
I’ve been off for the last couple (of games) so I will go back to the drawing board and do some work again this week."
