I don't think we're necessarily much better off if he leaves and we're left paying 400k or more.

Sure he's underperformed, but he's passable in first grade at a number of positions which makes him an excellent 14. He'd among the best backups in the league at fullback, in the halves or in the centres. Obviously you don't want to be paying 800k for someone to be an elite backup/utility guy, but at the same time, if we let him go for 400k, we need to find someone to fill that role for the same amount.

There's a handful of guys who are similar that immediately come to mind (Connor Watson & Kurt Mann), plus some others I'm sure.

I suppose the fresh start aspect is worth something, and if that 400k we're saving is the difference between us acquiring a star player, then sure it's worth it. But if it's getting rid of him just for the sake of getting rid of him to save some cap space, I'd rather just hold onto him if the alternative is subsidising a load of his salary.

With MBye asking for a potential release from next year's contract, if he finds somewhere to go, we don't have to pay any of his 2022 contract. (Assuming he leaves before Nov 1 if that's still the date these days post covid.)

I guess if he has something lined up and asks for a release from next years contract, then we aren't obliged to pay anything I would think.

Having said that I would imagine that we would most likely part on amicable terms and come to some sort of agreement that benefits all parties.

Exactly he wants out the club has no commitment to pay anything ...so $800K to spend that's the best news so far this season.
