Moses Suli

Bellamy and Hasler were after him, or were they pushing his price up to have a crack at one of our other off contract stars. We badly need a decent outside back with pace and size, so lets hope it works out.

Great to have a kid from within our system signed up - but when we continue to have salary cap issues, it's a bit rich of the current administration to simply blame the previous board prior to the independents. Farah aside, the issues we're experiencing now are a result of the people either in place now or directly previous to them (Mayer, Moss etc).

Um, the new board started in 2014, they got rid of Mayer mid 2015\. How long do you think backloaded 2-4 year contracts last to roll off? Pretty simple equation mate. The issues this year aren't current admin. Next year, yes.

I like this signing. Centre and a kicker. The fact Bellamy and Hasler were bidding, say we probably paid what he was worth.

The SMH article is a tad misleading. It's really a four year deal which doesn't sound as bad. As others have mentioned I'd say it's heavily incentive based. Anyways whatever we spent I suppose it's nice that we were able to beat out glamour clubs like the dogs and storm for an in demand kid.

What most impressed me with Suli is his defence on the right hand side of the field. The players around him have confidence in his ability to defend. For a young player, his composure impressed me as well as his willingness to take the hard hit ups close to our line. His size and pace speaks for itself but if ever a team needed a specialist right hand centre who is big, fast and can defend, it is WTs. Well done WTs Management.

Dumb decision

x2 , we haven't learn't nothing with Brooks when he was touted as the next Johns :blah :blah :blah .

The bottom line is he is untried at NRL level and we are not a Club that can afford the luxury of spending such money for a kid who will most likely play lower Grades for the next 2 years .

Hope it all works out and that Harry came to the party with this signing :unamused:

We also don't have the luxury of investing nothing in junior development and just poaching the cream of other clubs' systems when they're ready to contribute.

The only way a club like ours can compete is to have a lot of young talent, correctly identify which players are going to make it and lock them up before bigger money lures them away.

I don't know whether this guy is going to be a gun at NRL level. But this kind of move is exactly what the club has to do. If we wait until he's a proven first grader we'll lose him, so we have to take a chance.

Well said Padsandclaws - never thought I would ever be agreeing with you, but I guess there is a first time for everything.
As in any business you sometimes have to take calculated risks if you want success.

If he signed elsewhere everyone would go mad at losing a good prospect in a position we need.

I think these days its easier to judge if a player is going to make it through the physical testing and opposed sessions they do. Of course that doesnt guarantee it, but its more of an educated guess these days, especially when the kids is already in your system like Suli is. We have obviously had a good look at him snd his personality too.

Hope they know what they're doing. Opening up the cheque book when the new cap won't be known for months has its risks. I'm expecting a couple of exits before 30 June

Hope the hype lives up to the promise .Not another Karl Filiga.

Its the chance you take, would you rather see him go to the dogs or storm? If that happened and he is a success we would all be screaming the house down about poor retention of our players.Sometimes you just have to take a punt.

if he is as good as they say what a backline we could have, late this year or next year.

teddy
simona
suli
idris
nofa
moses
brooks
and if some of the young forwards come on we will have pack to look after them MAYBE GOOD TIMES AHEAD.

The WTs have so many talented juniors that come through our system, every now and then some develope into good rep players, like Benji,Farah,Woods,Teddy .There has been interest in Lots of our juniors but not to this level. I'm not aware of any (apart from Benji) that had so many other clubs vying to sign them up on big coin.
Yes it's a gamble, however he has been in the Tigers system since he was 15\. So at least WTs coaches and management have been able to assess Suli over the years, rather than watching YouTube highlights packages.
If a lot of top NRL coaches see a lot of potential in a particular player and he has come onto the market in a position we are light on at NRL level, I'm glad we have gone for him.. As opposed to going to the market (along with every other club) with a cheque book, hoping to sign the next big starJunior that they no little about, other than hype.
It looks like a calculated gamble.

Is it true that he is also a handy goalkicker?

Interesting to see what happens with Lovett now. Maybe he will get the arse.

I hope the club know what they are doing. He is big and quick but we've taken high priced gambles on rookies before with mixed results. Hopefully he's a Marshall and not a Brooks.

So we've signed Suli until the end of season 2020 for 1.3m. Which is four seasons (2017,2018,2019,2020) at $325k per season (by my reckoning).
Did I read somewhere that Simona is on $350k ?
How much would Joey" "BJ" Leilua be on?

That sums it up.
Clubs like ours need to take the leap of faith and roll the dice on unproven blokes who look like they've got the goods.
If/when he shows he's a gun then the brown paper bag clubs are gonna swoop in and we would have lost our chance. Let's face it, even if there were a plethora of quality centres available for the taking from other clubs, you wouldn't get anyone too great for $400 000 IMO.
Hope he kicks on.

Wow that's a lot of money for an outside back who has only played two games of NYC. You can only hope that management have got this one right
