It's important to remember that the NRL kicked both Balmain and Western Suburbs out of the competition. They were unwanted and they are no more. Even if the Magpies could become the sole owners of Wests Tigers, their club would not be welcome back in the top grade. Neither the NRL, the sponsors or the broadcasters have any interest in narrowing the club's fan base or marketability. The NRL license is in the name of Wests Tigers, you'd have as much chance of bringing back the Jets.
As for moving games to Campbelltown, the club couldn't afford to. The Tigers are guaranteed revenue by playing at ANZ, and it actually has the space to accomodate games against good Sydney sides. I like playing at old school suburban grounds, but there's no point playing Souths at Leichardt if we don't all fit. As it is the club needs to get more than about half capacity on Leichardt or Campbelltown games or they lose money. From memory they usually break even on Leichardt and lose money on Campbelltown, but someone will chime in with the figures.
So given that the NRL now has control of the Wests Tigers board, why would they allow some old dinosaurs to move profitable fixtures away from Sydney's best venue? Why would they consider alienating half the club's fanbase and sponsorship potential? Why would they even entertain the idea of rebranding the TV favourite Wests Tigers to bring back a club that failed in the 90's?
It's just dumb bogan pub talk. The Magpies are gone, along with Balmain.
Ok, I'm off to the ground, let's smash Souths this afternoon.
