**Ennis stands his ground but ref's call helps provide Queensland win**

MICHAEL ENNIS has defended himself over the match-turning penalty in last night's Origin clean sweep by Queensland, insisting he was standing his ground by punching Maroons prop David Shillington.
>
NSW held an 18-13 lead in the 73rd minute when Queensland back-rower Nate Myles was tackled by Ennis and collected on the chin by prop Kade Snowden. Myles, thinking the high shot came from Ennis, elbowed the Blues hooker twice while he was on the ground and Ennis rose to a minor brawl. He landed an uppercut on Shillington, who had joined in the melee.
>
''Once again the referees have made the decision against me,'' Ennis said. He was penalised and one minute later Billy Slater scored the try that put Queensland back in the lead and set up their 23-18 victory. ''It's disappointing, a lot of emotion there, you feel like you could have done things differently. But in saying that, do you stand there and let a bloke punch you in the head or do you stand your ground?'' Ennis said. ''There wasn't a lot in it, then I copped one elbow, then another elbow, I got a punch somewhere in there so I just reacted.
>
''Disappointing obviously, it wasn't ideal. I'm not going to kick up a media stink about it, it's footy, you move on. There's not much that can be done about it now, but I was surprised [at being penalised].''
>
Ennis has a reputation as a niggler but this time he clearly reacted to Myles's aggression. With the game on the line, however, NSW coach Craig Bellamy conceded it was a ''pretty costly'' penalty.
>
For Blues interchange Kurt Gidley, the game was deja vu. The Blues had saved their best for last. ''It takes me back to 2009,'' Gidley said. ''I was having the same conversation with you guys. It's frustrating and hard to swallow, certainly on the back of a three-nil loss. It was definitely our best game out of the three, but there was still plenty of disappointment.''
>
Returning Greg Bird said the players spoke about the future as they gathered in a huddle after the full-time siren.
>
''There were a lot of blokes that were saying a lot of things,'' Bird said. ''There were a lot of young blokes in that team and I think quite a few of them were disappointed by the result, and a few blokes just stood up and said, 'don't be disappointed, we were all over them all game'. I think we had more line breaks than them. We probably didn't capitalise on our opportunities and paid the price. But I think we're better for the run and if we can keep this team that we had out there tonight, I really think we can start establishing something down in NSW.
>
''They [Queensland] are not invincible. Any rugby league team can get beaten on their day.
>
''It was disappointing to lose, but … I thought we played awesome. The young blokes killed it. But it wasn't to be.''
>
The Blues' performance was notable for the efforts of Gidley, fullback Jarryd Hayne and Bird, who played at lock but has excelled at five-eighth for NSW before. With Trent Barrett set to retire, he is an option for five-eighth next year, although he suggested he would prefer to remain at lock.
>
Gidley's effort led to questioning of whether he had potentially found another starting position - hooker - for NSW. But he was adamant he still wanted the fullback position.

Disregading his cat slaps for one moment. What about the gaping hole Shillington ran through when you piked on the tackle because you were scared you cat?

^^^^^
Ha….ha! Ennis cost NSW the game and showed everyone how much of a cat he really is! hahaha

Stand your ground... what by throwing a few grandma dog shots! He got 2 clean dog shots on Myles and Myles stood up as though he just had a few specks of dust hit him in the face lol

This will do me…....

Bellamy says the NSW spine of fullback Jarryd Hayne, halfback Mitchell Pearce and hooker Michael Ennis is the frame around which future Blues sides can be built.
>
"It doesn't take long for momentum to swing at times," Bellamy told reporters on Tuesday.
>
"I know it's been a little while this last period but the positive thing out of this series for us is we've got a spine in place there now that can be there for a fair while.
>
"You'd like to think that Jarryd, Mitchell and Michael could be there for a while and NSW can build a team around those guys.

I wonder where all the other Ennis supporters have gone after last nigt's brain melt and dog act performance? His weaknesses are so glaringly obvious in Origin it's disgusting.

It seems Ennis' definition of standing your ground would differ to most. I don't think throwing flurry of cheap shots while your target is on the deck then catting it behind Snowden when he gets up when you know you're in for a decking constitutes as standing your ground.

That makes you a snake and a sissy. Nothing more, nothing less.

the guy is such a tool, atleast stand up and admit that what he did was dumb and lost the game!!! if there is 7 mins to go don't be stupid and throw punches and then hide because your going to get penalised!

i really hope a coach comes in that loves farah cos the d**ks in the selection room are going to want to keep ennis the idiot! and he just plain doesn't deserve it!

And i hope lawrence really gets a go next year over gasnier or scott or someone else, gus was saying all night how scott is a defensive centre and whenever he got the ball he went back inside and not out to the wing. it was crap and predictable.

im hoping some new management step in.

Thats why I feel for Gordon. It's hard for a winger to make an impact when he doesn't see the ball.

STAND YOUR GROUND???????
Hahahahaha this guy has mental problems…..

Speaking from the point of view of a bloke who has been in a lot of knuckles, I'm offended thats what this sissy clown thinks is standing up and being a man is all about.

He is nothing but a big noting, no action, cheap shoting, gutless, pussy, coward!

If I was a New South Welshman I'd be furious....that game was yours last night.....every single stat was in your favour. This absolute mongoloid lost you that game....single handedly.

What sort of tool is he? He must be a leaf blower. Makes a lot of noise and a lot of mess trying to do the job of a rake!

Fact of the matter is he cost us the game because he lost his head. No execuses. He gets that kind of treatment week in week out so coming out and suggesting he's defending himself just doesn't cut it. How old are u mick?? What a sissy! NSW have scored few points this series and a lot of that is down to the combination the hooker has with his fellow players. He's offered nothing. He just doesn't have the skills of a top notch hooker, he's like the poor man's version.

The top hookers these days are dangerous attacking weapons. Ennis is 'old school', would've been a gun 20 years ago. He doesn't have the skills or the attacking brain to be a top hooker. He's barely better than Alan Tongue. How he's played 5 origins i'll never know??? This is a guy who doesn't even rank imo, amongst the top hookers in the competition. Smith, Farah, Luke, De Gois and Nathan Friend all rate higher than Ennis because they're far better attacking hookers. In the 5 origins Ennis has played his best asset to be pointed out has been his mongrel and his so called toughness…....like punching someone in the head then hiding behind your nearest team mate. Woah, that's so tough!

The good news is common sense will prevail and Robbie will get his jersey back next season.

Unless they give it to Gidley, which wouldn't be a bad thing either. He had a blinder playing at hooker last night.

Michael Ennis claims referees unfairly targeted him in State of Origin III
By Margie McDonald
July 08, 2010
Hooker Michael Ennis felt he was victimised by the referees in State of Origin III because of his reputation as a niggler at club level.

Ennis tackled Queensland backrower Nate Myles in the 73rd minute, and after a short wrestle on the ground, the two players were up and fighting with Queensland prop David Shillington joining the fray.

The penalty went against Ennis and less than a minute later, Billy Slater stepped between Cronulla teammates Paul Gallen and Kade Snowden to score the try that put Queensland back in front 19-18\. Willie Tonga's late try sealed NSW's fate.

But Ennis felt he was a man wrongly targeted.

"Looking at the replay, someone hit him up top and he thought it was me I suppose," Ennis said.

"I felt an elbow and then a punch so I just reacted to it. It's footy - move on."

However, Ennis could not hide his displeasure at being singled out as the aggressor.

"I was actually (surprised) but it's done now so I'm not going to make a kick and stink about it," he said.

"That's what happens. But once again the referees have made the decision against me."

Neither Ennis, Kurt Gidley nor Paul Bird sounded like players from the losing side last night.

"They didn't get away on us like they have previously. We could have won that tonight. We let a few opportunities slip," Ennis said.

"There's a great vibe among the players. You never want to lose a game, let alone a series 3-0\. But to finish on that note with the style of footy we played I thought was very positive.

"I think we showed tonight they're not unbeatable."

Bird, who along with "Bash Brother" partner Paul Gallen made 39 runs between them for a total of 318m, said the momentum was with the Blues most of the night.

"We can grow from that game out there tonight. We played awesome and our young blokes killed it," Bird said.

"They're not invincible. And we were all over them for most of the game.

"If we can keep this team together I really think we can start establishing something down here in NSW."

Gidley said as long there was breath in his body he would keep fighting to beat Queensland.

"There's a big gap between now and next year. As long as I'm involved on the team I'll never give up on an Origin series win," he said.

But the NSW players will most likely lose coach Craig Bellamy and no one wants that to happen.

"I've loved playing under Craig. I pulled him aside yesterday and told him that," Ennis said.

Youve got to be kidding..
