Naiqama: "We're not that far off"

Mon 18th April, 04:19PM

Wests Tigers centre Kevin Naiqama is adamant that his side aren't far off a victory following a heartbreaking Golden Point loss against the Melbourne Storm.

Having scored the final try in his side's enthralling comeback to take the match to Golden Point, the Fijian international said he was still feeling the mental effects of losing a tough game like that, but felt that the right performance wasn't far away at all for Wests Tigers.

"We're not far off," enthused Naiqama after recovery today.

"There's just little things that we need to tweak, but that win is close.

"We took Melbourne to the death and we had a lot of key players out too, so there's a lot of confidence we can take from that game individually and as a group too.

"We're really looking forward to this against Canberra and getting back to the drawing board and training hard and working hard to get that win this weekend.

"It's not like we're getting smashed 50-nil each week," he said.

"We're in every game, so we know what we need to do to change it around.

"We've put that game behind us because we can't do anything about it now. We're looking forward to this game and it's obviously going to be a tough one for us.

"But in saying that, we're hungry for a win. We're five weeks without a win so we're going to be going down there giving everything we've got to get that victory this weekend.

"I can tell you, I'm going to be giving my all.

"It's a hard feeling to take, losing five in a row. I know Canberra are going to be ready for us, but in saying that, we're going to be ready for them as well."

I really want to believe it, but its pretty hard to when your confidence and enthusiasm has been worn down by 5 consecutive losses.

Problem with all these close losses is they take their toll.

Emotionally, physically, confidence.

Don't be surprised if we get blown out soon.

Gotta love Kevvy, one of my favourite players and probably one of our best bargain buys of all time, although he didn't look fully fit out there the other day.

They take their toll on the supporters. I really wanted a win last week. I've given up this week. I reckon the Raiders are better than the Storm and we are playing them at their home ground.

It's another game that we can win though. Hopefully the players especially our halves play well and win us the game.

Well I sure am glad that Kev is thinking like he is.

If he was thinking like post posts on this thread we really would get done by 50.

tigers fans really put up with a lot of nonsense…

"we tried hard"

"we're getting there"

Well kev were coming damn near last! and have been for almost 5 years. Which means we need a massive overhaul of something!

I think he is right, the key question is this:

Do they know what needs to be tweaked? Do they have the capability to do it?

Regardless, with the way they are playing, I think either sooner or later they will give someone an almighty touch up and it will be any team in the NRL from 1-16.

Not sure about you guys but that sentence infuriates me…true champions would never say that. You either win or you lose. Kobe Byrant just retired and he was damn tenacious about winning and you would never hear him saying crap like this...

It's like me apologising to my boss for being 5 minutes late..."it's not like i'm an hour late". If you're late, you're late. Just win for God's sake. We've all had to put up with this crap for too long as tigers fans...

if i was 5 minutes late everyday, i'd say look im only 5 minutes late i reckon i can take a shorter shower and easily get in on time.

similarly, he's not denying theyre losing. he's just saying that theyre close to winning (not getting towelled up like the knights). find a knights player after this week who would say 'yeah we're pretty close.' cause i bet you wont and if you do theyre talking out their ass.

i never heard him say it was acceptable, just that they are close to winning and hopefully stringing a few together to put us in contention for the eight.

what would you like him to say?
