Nathan Cleary

Well the last Coach we extended too early and many times was Sheens our best Coach who should have been moved on at the end of 2007 in the end it ended poorly in 2012 some 5 years and 2 extensions later…

For all the great work Ivan has done so far...we still haven't achieved squat..for me if he gets us to the 8 this year and we start strongly in 2019 then yes time for extension talks to start after all he is tied up until 2020 anyway

Extending a Coach to sign one player because he might go to another Club or stay at the Club he's at is no reason..

Would you think the roosters will go hard for NC, then hoping IC will follow ??

Extend Ivan now til 2023 and the Roosters couldn't offer Nathan an opportunity to play for Ivan for at least another 5 years.

That’s just stupidity.

Other than your inadequate & glib response, I fail to see the stupidity. Go ahead and enlighten me sagacious one!

How many coaches are ever signed for 5 years? Do you want to sign a coach that long and realise in 2 years that it was a big mistake, and be forced to either persist with him or have to pay out somewhere in the neighbourhood of 2 million dollars? Didn’t we learn any lessons with Sheens? As I said, stupidity.

If he'd got a premiership in 2010 he might still be here Geo 😱pen_mouth:

Or until the Forum Ninjas rose as one and assassinated him

Just on that potential 1/2s pairing of Cleary & Brooks, although it looks great on paper Brooks has struggled in the past when he has not been the dominant playmaker. Does anyone think he'd regress back into his shell if paired with Cleary or would he fire as a running 5/8?

We will have Brooks or N Cleary, not both.

Do the names Bennett and Bellamy mean anything to GNR4LIFE I think Ivan will be the next successfull long term coach we have not looked so good since 2005 Ivan started the renovation in 2017 and the rebuild will take another season or two (rome wasn't built in a day)we appear to have stable club now from the board, front office all the way down to the gear steward what we dont need is for the Architect to move on and some nuffy come in and bring it all down extend Ivan now until 2023 theres not much out there at the moment and the Vulchers will be circling if we dont act fast.

So we’re putting Cleary in the same category as 2 coaches who have spent decades at their respective clubs and have won nearly 10 premierships between them? I’m as much a fan of Cleary as anyone else and one was on of his earliest supporters, but come on.

You’re being totally reactive, and not looking at the potential risks involved signing him up for that long. As good as he is, he’s done nothing to warrant such a contract the likes of Bennett and Bellamy have. It would be totally irresponsible and the day our beard is dumb enough to sign off on said contract is the day we will need a new board.

Theres risk in everything we do in the past we have taken the risk and ended up in the s*** for once we appear to have been rewarded and with the possiblity of gaining a rising star it should be a no brainer even if we dont get NC a lot of players will want to play under Ivan in preference to coach nuffy.

I’ll be interested to hear your thoughts if it backfires and we have to pay out millions of dollars. But hey, that’s worth the risk to bring in a player we might not even need.

Stupidity would be not having the foresight to realise that a club like the Roosters has the desire and the means to sign Ivan Cleary and (in all likelihood) his prodigiously talented son, right from under your nose.

We all know that in the short time IC has been at the club he has stabilised the listing mess he inherited and set a solid platform for future success through cutting loose the destructive elements that were at the joint and creating a culture where winning is expected.

Trusting him to continue with the process he began by extending his tenure by 3 more years would not be stupid - it would be one of the wisest things any board of this club has ever done. Come to think of it, that's giving way too much credit - in my opinion it is the obvious thing to do.

The fact they haven’t done that shows how wise they are. It’s easy for you to sit on your couch going on about what would be the wise thing to do when you aren’t the one responsible for for forking out millions of dollars, and you aren’t the one who will potentially be taken to court. When you are that person, maybe you be that wise too.

Or neither. If Brooks gets a whiff of Cleary coming he might jump ship. And then Cleary not sign with us.

When was the last time anyone was taken to court??Maybe if people we held accountable for decisions that are made or not made the game wouldn't be in the position it is at the moment (Bulldogs,Manly ,Parra)

Not necessarily , Brooks has 5/8 written all over him

Ah! think it was Des at the bulldogs - don't think it got that far because they had to pay out heaps for a coach they don't have now.

Hasler took the Dogs to court just last year. Sheens took us to court. And why are doing this again? Because the Roosters might swoop? Way to risk millions dollars due to paranoia.

Think Geo is on the money. Make the 8 this year, get off to a strong start next year, then let’s talk.

Hassler and Sheens took the clubs to court because they were owed money by fractured boards that made bad decisions, which is going to hinder the Bulldogs for the next 3 years or more .Hopefully we have moved on from that and now have a wise board in place. If there are better coaches out there that are avaiable yes look at them but unfortunately a GOOD coach is hard to come by there are plenty of coaches out but unfortunately they are buses and one day theymay make a coach.

Sadly for Brooks we have a highly paid 5/8 signed for the next 3 years after this one.
