Nathan Cleary

I don't know what everyone is freaking out about anyway

Unless he is going to ask for a release , he is going to be at Penrith in 2019

And I doubt we would be in a position to buy out NC's contract anyway

The blokes season just ended , something he has been working on since November and included a SOO series as well

Cut the kid a break for God's sake , he is gutted obviously

Like most of us , he is looking forward now to his holidays

Nathan Cleary is good but not worth the supposed price tag required for him and his chin.

Stay with Brooks and get some bigger forwards to keep the roll going forward.

Agreed. This is good news. The Tigers won't be paying NC $1m to come here. Brooks is better value.

The even better news of it is Brooks can be re signed before players go to open market. Which means we have first dibs.
If Nathan was genuine about coming here we would have waited till Nov 1 to commence negotiations, that had the potential of losing Brooks, However if he gets halfback of the year I don’t think he’ll come too cheap. $700,000 + as he took a $50k pay cut last 2 years in a row so it’s time we owe him a decent contract.

Brooks is exploring his options it seems

Yes we’ll probably have to stagger his contract.
I would say Ivan is coach at least next year. The following year possibly not. Ciraldo will get an upgrade for next year as his still contracted to the club till end of 19\. Next year depending on how we finish the year will be interesting but traditionally in Ivan Cleary teams he builds them up to a crescendo then they dip the following year. With next year our most likely window it might actually be a good situation changing coaches with Robbie and Marshall retiring.
I could even see Hodgo coach with the other 2 as assistants in 2020.

If Ciraldo is upgraded to head coach for the next few years Nathan will leave and join his dad here at the Tigers. What's good for us is the fact that Nathan hasn't been performing that good in his last few games .. and a lot of so called experts are saying he is not worth the big money he is supposed to be chasing. This means he might come across on an upgrade of his current value, but cheaper than we all first expected.

I'd still keep Brooks for sure, and play Nathan at number 6, and start encouraging Grub to move to the ESL, or shop him around here in the NRL. Benji can be Nathan mentor at number 6, and keep Benji as our back up half for 6 or 7.

It would be nice then if we could pick up a decent centre, winger and better than decent back rower.

Our 2019 squad should look something like this:

Props:
Packer; Matulino, Twal; Clark; Mikaele

Hookers:
Farah; Liddle

Back Rowers:
Lawrence; Matterson; Eisenhuth; Taylor; Garner; Aloiai; MCK; Rochow; McQueen

Halfs:
Brooks; Marshall; Grub; Gamble; Cleary

Centres:
Marsters; Fonua; Momirovski; ??

Wingers:
Thompson; Nofoaluma; ??; ??

Fullbacks:
Mbye; Smith

**That's 26 top their players so far. Players in red are the ones I'd like to see move on, and the blue ones are the ones I'd like to see here.

What makes you think Nathan will go if Ciraldo is coach? It’s not going to be Ivan unless he asks for a release in which case with Nathan signing first, Penrith can hold off on their coach sign their halfback and then maybe get Ivan or re sign Ciraldo or sign someone else. His comments give me the impression his happy to play under Ciraldo. But In saying that it is rare a caretaker ever goes on to be a long term nrl coach.
Most successful rookie coach’s start from the start of the season and don’t look back.

I give us zero chance of signing NC

He is a fan of CC and will play under him until IC joins Penrith

They are the 11 words from superstar halfback Nathan Cleary that will lift the spirits of shattered Penrith fans.

"It will be very, very hard to walk away after this," Cleary told Fairfax Media after Friday night's heartbreaking loss to Cronulla. "It's started a fire in the belly. We'll see what happens and go from there."

While the Panthers are out of the finals race following the 21-20 loss, the immediate focus will turn to locking up Cleary long term.

Cleary becomes a free agent on November 1, but the Panthers are keen to throw him a lucrative deal of up to five years, which will keep him at the foot of the mountains until the end of 2024.

It will then be a matter of when, not if, his famous father, Ivan, returns to the club as coach. Hopes of a reunion next year appear unlikely.

Just what Cleary will do once his existing deal expires at the end of next year was a storyline the halfback found impossible to escape all year, which is why he will not let it drag on again during the coming months.

A decision is likely to be reached well before his 21st birthday in November, which was seen as the unofficial deadline.

"I'm heading over to Bali and Thailand, I'll relax and get away from footy for a bit," Cleary said. "I'm going with family and then some school mates.

"I want to get this done as quickly as possible. There will be a lot of speculation and I don't want that.

"I'll have a good couple of days with the boys now, get through our reviews, then I'm happy to get straight into [negotiations].

"In the next week or so I'll start talks and hopefully get it wrapped up.''

Penrith are aware rival clubs will move quickly if Cleary becomes a free agent from November 1, hence their own eagerness to thrash out a long-term deal. They have already created a war chest by freeing up some space by releasing the likes of Tyrone Peachey to the Gold Coast and now Corey Harawira-Naera to the Bulldogs

The sweetener would be Ivan leaving Wests Tigers to eventually fulfil the family wish of being at the same club as Nathan.

A reminder of how close the pair are – and what gentle souls they are – was there to be seen at full-time at Allianz Stadium when they consoled each other.

"I was being a sook and had a cry on his shoulder,'' Nathan said.

"I couldn't hold it in when I saw mum and dad. They didn't say much and just told me how proud they were. They've always been so supportive of me.

I'm lucky to have those two as my parents.

"That was the first time I've cried after a game. I felt like I let the team down.

"It was really disappointing. To fight back the way we did, it's heartbreaking.

"It's been a pleasure to play with this team, especially to do what we did in the second half [fight back]. There are not many teams who can do it. And we've done it all year. It shows a lot of character.

"I think with this experience, everyone will be better for it next year. The way we lost tonight, it will give us a lot more hunger to come back bigger and better next year.''

Cleary suffered a knee injury in round three, returned to play in his first – and winning – Origin series with NSW, while his combination with James Maloney continually improved.

The Panthers, who bombed out in the second week of the finals for a third straight year, lose Peachey, Harawira-Naera and Christian Crichton, but also back fullback Dylan Edwards.

https://www.smh.com.au/sport/nrl/it-will-be-very-hard-to-walk-away-cleary-s-big-hint-about-future-20180915-p503zi.html

Not fussed if we get Nathan or not, I'm happy with Brooks. Like many have said it's the forwards we need! Get some aggressive, strong metre makers and I reckon Brooks will shine in 2019.

The only downside of not getting Cleary is the eventual (and likely earlier than expected) loss of his daddy as our coach. I was really hoping to see what Ivan could do with us over the whole 3 year period, with the strengthening of our roster. Now that will likely be cut short and even if he is made to see out his contract, there will always be a question over his commitment to us while ever Nathan plays for a different team. Bugger of a situation to have happen just when things were looking up for us.

On another note, I didn't know Penrith were losing Edwards as well - where is he going to? Great fullback, would be handy.

Think it’s a typo, says but, back and fullback. doesn’t say lose Edwards I think it’s meant to say but will welcome back fullback Dylan Edwards.

Ah yes thank you! That makes much more sense. Didn't think Penrith would let him go.

Best thing for us is Nathan signing with Penrith. He is over hyped very good player but not worth the 1m it would take to get him here. We have to upgrade and extend Brooks now. Moses will move him when he is off contract.

This will be shouted down but a swap of Reynolds for Mitchell Moses would make a lot of sense. Cleary would turn him around like Brooks.

I was caught out to a degree wondering if TYGA was serious or not as he is usually pretty genuine with his posts and found it weird he write something positive about that cancer

Assuming Ciraldo or an alternative is coach next year and, as is entirely possible , wins a premiership, where does that leave Ivan?
A possible scenario is Nathan has nothing to prove at panthers and may leave . Or am I underestimating Gould's propensity for fabricating reasons to sack a coach eg Ivan and Griffin.

Why shut a thread can't players from other clubs be discussed. ..?

I’m just making the point that imo he has determined to stay st Penrith and therefore from a Tigers perspective there is nothing more to discuss but, if you enjoy discussing Penruth’s progress, and their halfback, go for your life…......

And here it is a whole nother page seems others are happy to continue discussions…

Tyga, Tyga, Tyga! Wash your mouth out! If Mitchell Moses is ever seen in Wests Tigers colours again, I will seriously 'turn it up'.

I don't disagree with your first paragraph, however.

Some of you have to stop trying to read the tea leaves everytime there's an interview with N Cleary etc. He's going to say good things about Penrith and their staff even if he plans to bigger off. Means nothing either way.

In the meantime, fire up the BBQ, crack open a good bottle of bourbon and wait until his birthday or whenever he makes his announcement.
