Nathan Cleary

From what Gus is saying, it seems that Nathan will re-sign with Penrith (and who wouldn't; have you seen the team they're building?!) but will eventually leave to play with his dad. Whether or not it will be with the Tigers who knows but not too confident about Nathan coming over from what Gus has said.

Really, I read it the other way, Gus knows he has lost him and is getting the excuse ready, the agreement he keeps talking about for Nathan to play for his dad

Both the writer of the article and Gus constantly highlight the phrases "some day" and "in the future" when referring to the prospect of Nathan playing under his dad. IDK it just struck me as odd the way Gus was wording it

Well last year Gus wanted to sign Nathan for life , now he’s basically saying he can go if he wants .

Nathan doesn’t need to wait until November to sign with the Panthers .

The fact that he’s waiting until November means he probably isn’t signing with them .

"Panthers general manager Phil Gould has revealed he has an agreement with Nathan Cleary to **release** the NSW halfback if he wants to play with under father Ivan in the future."

Nathan Cleary 'likely' to join Wests Tigers and unite with father Ivan - NRL.com report Michael Di Lonardo
Published on Jul. 29, 2018
Phil Gould has given him his blessing and Nathan Cleary is expected to act on it with reports the Panthers playmaker is ‘’likely’’ to join Wests Tigers at the end of next season to link up with father and NRL coach Ivan.

On Friday, Panthers supremo Gould revealed he won’t stand in the way of the rising star if he chooses to play under his father at Concord, with the pair reaching a verbal agreement on a possible move.

Both Cleary’s have held no secrets about their desire to form a fNathan can't talk to rival clubs until then but there’s no restrictions on dinner table sales pitches at the Cleary household and The Daily Telegraph’s Phil Rothfield revealed the pair are preparing to link up in 2020.

‘’I’m just hearing more and more out of the people around the Cleary family that it is more likely now that he (Nathan) will leave Penrith at the end of next season when his contract is up because he does want to play for his dad at the Wests Tigers as long as his dad is there,’’ Rothfield told Fox Sports’ Controversy Corner.

‘’…I honestly think both Cleary’s will be at the Wests Tigers. And do you know what I think a bit of it is about? I don’t think the Cleary family has fully got over the fact that Gus Gould sacked Ivan and I think that’s part of this.’’

Sporting News Australia’s The Repeat Set revealed on Friday that the Cleary family is still holding a grudge on Penrith over Ivan’s sacking in 2015 and it could prove to be the sticking point in Nathan re-signing.

If he opts to extend his deal, Penrith may be forced to offload players to make way for what is expected to be a multi-million dollar deal with funds tied up in their 2020 salary cap.

Nathan’s decision will also have a domino effect on the future of Tigers playmaker Luke Brooks who has been earmarked as the player likely to be moved on to make room at Concord.

While he has been impressed by Brooks’ season, Ivan and his No.7 are understanding of the fast-paced nature of player movements.

"He (Brooks) knows exactly what the story is,’’ Cleary said on Tuesday.

"Rugby league in terms of retention and recruitment, it's an on-going circus really. Every day there is a discussion and it's just how we roll."

Tigers legend Steve Roach is hopeful the club finds a place for both halves if Nathan does unite with his father after Brooks delivered on his earlier expectations.

‘’I feel a little bit sorry for him. I don’t know how they’re going to fit them (Brooks, Cleary and Josh Reynolds) in and obviously they are going to try and fit them in,’’ Roach said.

‘’Luke Brooks, now we expected a lot of that kid when he came in, finally this season he’s taken control of that side and they’re playing a lot better.

‘’Brooks was the only kid really (who stayed) with all that stuff (in 2017) with the Tigers. I’d hate to see him go.

‘’Surely you’d be able to fit them both in? Cleary is a 92kg halfback, you can play him at five-eighth.’’ather-son combination, attracting links to the Tigers, Roosters and Brisbane as the November window for negotiations draws closer.

Under the agreement Gus talks about, Nathan could ask for a release and join us at the end of this year, he wouldnt have to wait til season 2020

Unless they can move the Grub on, Brooks will probably be out the door. Brook's asking price come 2020 will jump a fair bit and even the Chooks would baulk at paying out close to 3 million for three players to basically cover two positions.

Be interesting if Gus considers releasing him early, although all this might just be pie in the sky stuff and young NC stays put or moves onto another club all together.

Back to the Brooks thing, I would keep him at all costs, especially when you think young NC is likely to be playing SOO and will be missing for the odd game

It's such a long way off from happening why are they even talking about it now? We still have a whole season and a half to go yet before he thinks about coming here. Talk about it this time next year and move onto something more current.

Who we can secure next season that could help make us a more credible Premiership option is all I'm concerned about right now, 2020 is too far away to think about - anything could change between now and then.

So you don't think there is any chance that Penrith will release NC early and that would see him here in 2019??

Gould comes out saying whenever NC feels like he wants to play with his dad they'll release him

NC has made it very public, along with Gould and Ivan a decision will come by November this year which is really early

Picture this - all reports are right and NC informs the Panthers he doesn't want to re sign

You don't think Gould would want to release him to relive cap pressure and look at other halfbacks?

Moral of this post you think if NC says he wants to go to the Tigers in 2020 that Gould would wanna release him and move onto the future?

Would not be surprised to see NC at the Wests Tigers in 2019

Has Maloney got a multi year deal there? He's the main man at the panthers so releasing Cleay a year early wouldnt be a ridiculous notion.

Anyone talking up Brooks after the Bulldogs game is “dreaming”.

It just does not sink in …Brooks has had 100games to impress , tied of if he had a great pack this does not equate to his decision making when the pressure is on or in the red zone .
Is this club ever going to progress from the potential mentality.

Judging by what has been reported in the media I would say no.

If you can't see that Brooks has improved immnesly this season then you're watching the wrong games

Go look at his stats alone

Chuck Brooks in a Dragons or Storm kit and he could be the best half in the game….. he's playing in a pack where his forwards all struggle to get 100 m and maybe one will hit it

He has been our best this season and there's no competition

Everything reported in the media suggests Nathan will be here in 2019\. becoming clearer and clearer. Gould's comments almost confirms it.

Nathan Clearly will be here in 2019 that's why he has not resigned with the Panthers for the last year which Gus has wanted get the season done bring on Luni the young half Penrith has with Maloney for two seasons 2019 2020 let him learn it's done relax Brooks 5/8 Clearly in the number 7

That's all well and good if Cleary does end up coming a year early, but how about us signing some decent forwards first! He'll be about as effective as Brooks already is anyway playing behind the pack we have now (minus the ones leaving at year's end). He's had the luxury of playing behind a dominant Penrith pack with Maloney beside him - how well do you reckon he will go with our current lot? Unless there are going to be some significant signings up front to bolster our pack, signing Cleary for next season will be a waste of time, imo.

Luni injury does not help things.

Panthers should never have played him at full back. It was a real development set back. He is injured pretty bad ain't he?
