Nathan Cleary

Wish Brooks could practice non stop in getting the ball thru the defensive line when on last tackle in the red zone. Love to know his % as against the dogs and many games i have seen this year, breaks things down for us and often leads to huge conter attacks

I don't think fathers coaching sons in the top grade is a good idea. Most sons seem to want to make their own mark on the game without the assistance of their 'famous' dads. Has there been a precedent of a father coaching his son in the ARL/NRL? I can't think of any.

Hey welcome back Flip we missed you

Yes….the Langs.

Does anyone else think Nathan will only sign if he has a get-out clause if Ivan decides to leave or gets punted? Wonder what would happened if we have Nathan playing out of his skin but the team misses finals for a coupe of years? That could get messy.

For sure. I think that’s probably half the appeal for Ivan to get him here. Imagine the power Cleary would wield within the club if Nathan had a clause. Not that he would abuse it, but it would be a handy security blanket.

I only saw the start of last nights game but when the Bulldogs made their first break Brooks started to run down the bloke but pulled out of the race fairly quickly.

I got the feeling that his hamstrings aren’t the best either.

All I can say Happy about your last paragraph is it probably proves again that Brooks is no way a proper halfback. He couldn’t organise a chook raffle. I’ll take Nathan every day of the week.

Certainly tearin Manly to pieces…

Certainly did tear Manly to pieces!!!!

Yeah there will be a clause if it happens. Nathan used to have the clause at Penrith when Ivan was there but stayed when Gus sacked his dad. Apparently the clause was removed after Ivan left but Gus has said he wouldn't stand in Nathans way if he wanted to play for his father.

Not true. A loop hole was explained when Cartwright signed with the Titans.
Apparently the current contract can’t be negotiated by another club before it ceaees. There’s nothing in place that stops future contracts being negotiated only they can’t be signed.

But the bloke on talkin sport said it would be announced within a month - that can’t happen can it??

Said it will come out in few weeks. Very different!
Call me a conspiracist but something I believe is at play.
I don’t know who is talking but looking at things from a realistic perspective Brisbane need a halfback and a new coach from 2020.
I would think that Ivan would have more runs on the board than Seibold and would be their first choice.
The other side of it is that Wayne is in limbo but at the same time doing what he can to guide the Broncos into the next gen.
I’m not sure if Wayne is supportive of the Clearys coming however he and the Broncos have a lot of pull and a left field idea I’ve conjured up could be that a swap deal is negotiated for both coaches start of 2020\. His Son Darius would most likely retire by then but he could bring his new son Jack Bird to return to Sydney and partner up with an experienced Brooks.
Wayne wouldn’t like the idea but it might be the next best thing to getting the arse uncomfortable and embarrassingly, and if he still feels the fire might give him one more challenge to finish off his career talking a well built squad deep into September.
Of course this would only happen if the Cleary’s decide that a move to Brisbane is the next step for their family. Otherwise it’s NC to the Tigers. And Wayne and the Broncos to sort out their own alternative path.
But there are too many pieces at play at this same time for something not to be happening.
Wayne pressuring the Broncos about his future and the same day as Brooks suddenly being asked about his, followed by Ivan opening saying he would like his Son at the Tigers but the Caller mentioning the news tonight that his Son has in fact signed with Brisbane…..

What garbage did I just read…

Silly you for reading it all.

Im unfussed whether Ivan stays or goes as coach tbh.Id like him to stay, but its no dealbreaker as his defence structures have been a significant improvement, but offense coaching and recruitment have been both quite disappointing.Theres a truckload of equally qualified coaches waiting for a gig who simply stayed too long at their respective clubs
As for no 7,,Brooks is actually the more talented athlete but suspect he'll never outperform in a leadership role (which the position requires),whereas Nathan C may one day develop into a genuine game manager a little like Sterlo was

Sorry mate don’t agree with your assessment on Ivan’s recruitment or Brooks being a more talented athlete.

With regards to recruitment our club has been a basket case for years and if your an established star or up and coming star why would you come to the Tigers? We haven’t been able to offer decent facilities or any chance of making the finals let alone a premiership. Add to that our miserable record with coaches and no wonder we have struggled to attract quality players. I honestly believe this is changing but reputation and perceptions don’t change overnight.

With regards to Brooks being a more talented athlete I can’t see where you are coming from. NC is a quality athlete and so is Brooks but to suggest Brooks is more talented I just don’t see that. They are both very talented with their own sets of skill that make them different players. I actually think they would compliment each other quite well.

Gould reveals agreement for Cleary to play under his father
Author Brad Walter Senior Reporter Timestamp Sat 28 Jul 2018, 07:48 AM

Panthers general manager Phil Gould has revealed he has an agreement with Nathan Cleary to release the NSW halfback if he wants to play with under father Ivan in the future.

Cleary’s future is the source of constant speculation as he comes off contract at the end of next year and Gould admits that even if he re-signs with Penrith he will eventually want to join up with his dad.

The 20-year-old will be allowed to negotiate with rival clubs from November 1 and he and his father, who is the coach of the Wests Tigers, have publicly stated their desire to team up at some stage.

Penrith coach Anthony Griffin told media on Friday he wanted Cleary to stay beyond next season but Gould said he had no doubt that one day Nathan will leave the club to work with Ivan.

Gould said Cleary would have his blessing to do so and the Panthers would not stand in his way.

"He’ll make a decision at the end of the year," Gould told Nine after the Tigers loss to Canterbury on Friday night.

"Whatever that decision is, I will support it 100% and Ivan will support it 100% because it’s his career.

"But I have an agreement with Nathan. If one day he says, ‘I want to go play with my dad’, let’s make it happen. I’ve got no problem with him going to play with his father whatsoever."

Cleary’s decision could have an impact on whether Tigers halfback Luke Brooks re-signs as he is also off contract at the end of next season and last year sought out Ivan about his future if Nathan was to join the club.

"The answer is very simple - Ivan is a father who wants to coach his son, we all understand that," Gould said.

"Nathan is a son who would like to play for his father one day - we all understand that.

"I believe it will happen. And I would like to see it happen. But the decision right now is in Nathan’s hands. Neither his father or I are putting any pressure on him."

Could also be a reason why we're not seeing any signings or anything at the moment as well, waiting on this to be sorted.

However, what we really need is are forwards, I think Nathan would struggle behind our pack

From what Gus is saying, it seems that Nathan will re-sign with Penrith (and who wouldn't; have you seen the team they're building?!) but will eventually leave to play with his dad. Whether or not it will be with the Tigers who knows but not too confident about Nathan coming over from what Gus has said.

Really, I read it the other way, Gus knows he has lost him and is getting the excuse ready, the agreement he keeps talking about for Nathan to play for his dad
