NEWCASTLE Knights forward Chris Houston has been stood down indefinitely and could face the sack by the club after being charged today with drug offences.
Less then three months after the arrest of his former Knights teammate Danny Wicks for similar offences, Houston’s was served with a court attendance notice at 10.30am via his legal representative by officers attached to Strike Force Welham.
Houston, who shared a house with Wicks prior to his arrest last December, will appear in Newcastle court on April 13 facing three charges of supplying ecstasy and one charge of supplying cocaine.
Knights spokesman Steve Mount confirmed Houston was immediately stood down after they were made aware of the charges being laid in a devastating blow before the start of the 2010 NRL season.
Moruya-born Houston, who started his career at St George Illawarra Dragons, was 18th man for the third game of the 2009 State of Origin series for NSW and has captained the Knights twice.
"About 10.30am today, officers attached to Strike Force Welham, served court attendance notices on the 25-year-old Kotara man via his legal representative," NSW police said in a statement.
"The man will appear at Newcastle Local Court on 13 April 2010 on three charges of supplying ecstasy and one charge of supplying cocaine."
Strike Force Welham is the same strike force that arrested the popular former Knights' player Wicks.
