Newcastle: The "impostors" in the Top 8

These guys are yet to prove themselves against opposition of any note and will get shown up in the coming weeks by teams like the Warriors and Broncos. If you look at the teams they've beaten this year, they've beaten Penrith twice, Cowboys, Cronulla twice, Canberra twice, Parramatta, Roosters, Dragons (without 9 origin players) and Gold Coast. And have encountered two 13+ losses to Manly, lost to Brisbane, Dragons with full team, Cowboys (without Thurston), Warriors and Tigers proving they are in the position they are in on the back of doubling up on lowly teams.

As Mark Geyer correctly said this morning on the Sunday Roast, they are the only team in the eight who can't win the comp. In the next few weeks they'll probably scrape past the Dogs and Souths and lose to Broncos and Warriors meaning they'll finish with 13 wins, 11 losses which will most likely place them between 6-8\. But you can assure yourself one thing, they will not trouble any team within the Top 4.

I've got a mate who's Newcastle fan who'll be getting excited after today's big win, but I don't think he's got much to be excited about considering their record against GOOD teams.

Long shot but I was hoping the raiders would give them a run for their money today. Agree, they will hit the wall come finals time.

They're the "bullies" of the finals in my book. If they come up against a struggling side they'll blow them off the park as they've done in the past 3 weeks, but if they come up against a strong side they don't really do much damage.

I disagree, I see the Knights as being a massive dark horse. They have Mullen back and they're kicking game was incredible against the Raiders. I think they'll finish 8th, have to deal with Melbourne and it won't matter how good they are they'll just be beaten, but I think they have had huge injury problems and are now starting to get their best side back on the paddock and playing the same way they were at the start of the season.

Newcastle and us are in similiar boats Both have had major injury issues throghout the season and have had to struggle through and now are getting a lot of their players back .
The winner of the Knights game against Warriors will be crucial to the make up of the last three spots in top 8 .
I seriously cannot see anyone from outside top 8 challenging now unless we had a horrible injury game against Penrith .

They've racked up 50 points twice in the past few weeks. I'll concede that both scores were against inferior opposition but hardly worthy of being called imposters

Dont write these guys off just yet. They beat teams they should and that's the first step in being successful.

As for our Team.

We have seen the Tigers finally win 4 only after they decided to work on their completion rate. When we beat the lower placed teams as expected and but the expected margins then will I start relaxing and dismissing our opponents.

We need to win the next 4 from 4.

If they can beat the Warriors this weekend that will all but shut out all bottom 8 teams from reaching the finals. Can't see them doing that though.

Newcastle have been playing well.

Will finish 8th spot and get rolled by Melbourne in Melbourne in week one.

Told ya fella's! First time they play a good team in a month and what happens? They get beaten! Didn't play too badly though but showed they can't match it with the better teams.

Combined records of the teams they've beaten: 84-143-2
Combined records of the teams they've lost to: 133-76-1

That pretty much says it all.

I hope they make the finals.

Better than having to put up with the metho skulling scum fans of Souffs

Doesnt matter who youre playing, a few knock ons, mistackles and penalties against in todays game can cause a mssive swing against you

That said, their position on the table is relative to their season I guess, mover overachieving a bit.
They did have a turbulent off season….many predicting the spoon for them after the drug arrests

I think they are a solid TEAM playing to the best of their ability. Nothing more. Agree with you Ink, they are overachievers.

Can't see them doing any damage in the semis (should they make it).
