Nine announces new five-year broadcast deal with NRL

The best rugby league coverage will remain on Nine, live and free, in a five-year deal announced today which secures the broadcast rights to the game from 2023 to 2027.

As well as five more years of NRL coverage, Nine will remain the exclusive home of two of Australia's most watched sporting events, the State of Origin series, and the NRL grand final, ensuring all fans don't miss a moment of the action.

With a rugby league partnership going back three decades, Nine will continue to work in close collaboration with the NRL to expand the game across linear and digital platforms, while delivering the biggest clashes and more magic moments than ever before – led by an all-star commentary team featuring modern greats like Billy Slater, Cameron Smith, and Johnathan Thurston, lending their dedication to the game and analytical expertise.

And after securing the biggest ever live BVOD audience in Australia for the 2021 NRL grand final, 9Now will continue to be the premier destination for live streaming and catch-up viewing, as well as delivering more than 100 hours of Nine-produced digital content.

State of Origin will return to its traditional home of Wednesday nights in three blockbuster interstate clashes and Nine will continue to cement its commitment to the women's game with expanded broadcast, digital offerings and reporting of the NRLW competition.

In addition, Nine has also secured the radio and audio streaming rights, under which matches will continue to be broadcast in Sydney and Brisbane through 2GB and 4BC, extending Nine's NRL reach and aligning TV and exclusive radio rights on 4pm Sunday games. Plus, all Broncos versus Dolphins games will stream live in Brisbane.

The continued growth of rugby league is guaranteed as Nine works alongside the Australian Rugby League Commission, the NRL, and the clubs to promote the great game and to help deliver the moments and memories that generations of fans will remember forever.

That's a shame. Can't stand nine and their NRL comms team

Hard to know what to watch atm.
Braindeads on 9 and anasta and Ennis on fox.
The way the tigers have been going, I usually switch off the TV and listen to abc grandstand. Much better

The league are foolish to do at least wait a while. Nine has terrible coverage but no one else seems to get a look it.

Your right about that. I can't stand channel 9's coverage. 80% of people hate the commentary yet it never changes. Boys club.

I totally agree however it's a necessary evil unfortunately. I've just just been speaking to my golfing buddies, who are mad nrl fans, about nine's commentary team and we all agree that they suck and have been crap for years. General comments were; boring, sleepy, no personality and my opinion was that they are a group of dysfunctional robots. In the past their team was headed up by a dizzy blonde women who has an an annoying laugh accompanied by an immortal who finds it hard to keep awake and the same with Gould and Freddy.....zombies! It amazes me how little they value surveys and fans opinions because all they have to do is walk into any pub club or footy venue around OZ and get feedback from the average punter and they would mostly agree with me/us. Channel 9 is happy to throw money around apparently. It sounds a bit familiar to our new Weststigers Logo where it's another example of the club being a little disconnected from it's supporters. Fox as mentioned is not that much better, Ennis loves himself and has done it all, just ask him. Johns and Fletch and Hindy crack me up but doesn't help during game time.

Was there really that much backlash about the new logo?

Without doubt Nine’s NRL coverage is the lowest in Australian sports coverage. They have been protected for years by having a monopoly on the free to air coverage of NRL. They can roll the likes of Johns and Gould out for another five years, talking rubbish and it doesn’t matter. Sterlo was one of the very few who was worth listening to and sadly he has pulled the pin.

The NRL are in bed with the channel nine Rosters and hopefully it blows up in their face

Let’s get real, if not 9, then who?

If it wasn’t for 9, then the game would probably be no where near the level it currently enjoys.

Agree, some of the commentators are weird choices, but it’s there choices, they front the coin?

Yeah agree...
Can't see 10 doing a decent job they're amateur like community TV.... And watching 7s cricket,. Not much better

At least we'd end up with a different commentary team, they need a refresh

Well if you read the posts in the WT Logo topic most are annoyed about the size of the logo and most fans I've talked to albeit only a handful but from different states concur the logo is backward in design, whether or not the logo is well supported or not I feel that such a significant change to to what or who we support appeared to not have full backing from those who indirectly pay the bills. Off topic so I apologise.
