NINES TEAM...OFFICIAL

Back row stocks look just fine.

Other than that Naiqama and Buchanan really changed my mind about them, their attitude and application was exceptional.

I really lost interest in the tournament today, in fact i was kind of disinterested the whole weekend. I think the novelty of it last yr kind of it wore off. Kind of glad we didn't win it in a way as i was going to get on us at 51 bucks yesterday morning but decided against it. Was spewing last night after the results we had yesterday. Feel relieved about it tonight though in that aspect cos id have been filthy.

Considering Taylor is a new coach coming into a club in turmoil I can not blame him one bit for not taking this series that seriously. We have had a huge history of starting seasons with players on the side line and behind the 8 ball.

He also needs every minute possible to implement his changes to playing style, man management, training regime, etc etc etc. Spending 2 weeks on Nines tactics and sending over our Top 17 would be time consuming and risky on two fronts. He also knows that with a thin roster he needs to give himself every chance to start the PREMIERSHIP in good shape. A lot of players are coming off injuries this off season.

And people are getting their knickers in a knot that he sent a bunch of youngsters ( that did pretty well) over to the nines and we raised the white flag. Please. This actually gave him a chance to asses the hunger and fitness levels of the younger players that might be required for depth. No one cares that the Cowboys won the 9s last year? It doesn't mean they have the monkey off their back. Its not something they would look back on a great acheivement, more like a bit of fun.

Have a look at his circumstances compared to other coaches and where other clubs are at before bagging him. To me he took the series as it should be taken for a first year coach in a club with an injury history. Maybe if we have good year this year and Taylor is more established he might send a slightly stronger squad next year. People seem to be losing the context.

Good stuff, top post!

What I took out of the nines
1–Lawrence and Richards will get exposed big time due to lack of speed
2--In Cherrington we have a very classy back up nine
3--Drinkwater will be a good back up to Brooks if needed
4--Their seems to be some spirit in the joint
5--Their seems to be a few clubs who are very thin on talent

My thoughts on each player individually during the comp

Sitaleki Akauola: Didn't get many minutes in the two games that he did play but gave his usual whole- hearted charges which were good to see, made good ground. A few wayward offloads though which can be worked on. 6/10.

Nathan Brown: Again didn't see too much game time but was okay charging the ball in attack and decent in defence when on too. 5/10.

Jack Buchanan: Good comp for Jack, scored a try and was good in both attack and defense. Seems to have added a bit of grunt to his lackluster impact in previous years. 7/10.

Manaia Cherrington: Probably the find of the tournament for us. Dynamic, diminutive, speedy little hooker. We won't miss Farah too much if they persist with Cherrington over Luani through origin. 8/10

Josh Drinkwater: Support play was good, kicking game was okay, passing game was poor, running game was quite poor as well, but can't expect too much from the backup half. Was okay for the only playmaker in our squad. Didn't do too much wrong. 6/10.

Asipeli Fine: A tad slower than I expected (chased down by Dave Taylor) but otherwise a solid attacker and defender, did his hopes of NRL gametime no harm. 7/10.

Salesi Funaki: Like the look of this bloke, big, strong and quite fast for a back rower. One of our best. 7.5/10.

Delouise Hoeter: Solid in defense, showed nothing in attack, can't see a future for him at the club tbh. 5/10.

Chris Lawrence: Same old, same old, was okay but showed nothing to suggest he will be any better than previous years in our side - a liability. 5/10.

Lamar Liolevave: See Funaki. 7.5/10

Kyle Lovett: Was good in our 2nd game but I see Funaki and Liolevave despite being younger, ahead of him in terms of the pecking order for NRL positions, those two were more impressive. 6/10

Joel Luani: Provided nothing much, was okay in defense. 4/10

Kevin Naiqama: Another good find, won't be missing much if Nofoaluma can't be right for round one. 7.5/10.

Pat Richards: Honestly besides his kickoffs/conversions which are both pretty critical, doesn't provide much else these days, may be his last season in the NRL. 7/10, still for conversions and kickoffs when he did play.

Brenden Santi: See Lovett. I see more in Funaki/Liolevave. 6/10.

Ava Seumanufagai: Solid in attack and defense, will be useful this season off the bench helping Woodsy/Keefy/Marty.

Tim Simona: Was class during the games that he played, in for a big season, though looked a tad slower than I expected when he made a bust vs the warriors and was chased down?? 7/10.

Sauaso Sue: Powerful leg drive and solid in attack and defense, will be a real weapon I believe this year in the NRL. 7/10.

All in all a successful tournament as we came off relatively injury free despite Richards minor concern and despite sending over a fairly weak side. We take it a bit more seriously next season and who knows we might win. Good signs for the 2015 season ahead though. I sense we will see Cherrington, Liolevave and Funaki debut.

I am still missing how Rowdy is supposed to be a liability, based on anything that happened this weekend. People read the "I am fitter" stories this preseason and they suddenly expect the bloke to be carving up, running rings around others.

Reality check: there are seriously few players that have the kind of speed / footwork to score tries out of nothing. And many of those that might, e.g. your Ben Barba's and James Roberts have other deficiencies.

We took a fairly slow team to this comp, with only DW and Manaia to run the show. We did ok with the cattle we had, but I didn't any single Tiger tearing up the open spaces; our best work was the yardage up the middle and the occasional offload.

And about taking it seriously, I liked seeing lots of the fringe dudes get a run. Don't forget Brooks plays All Stars next week, so he was never going to 9s.

Wow I've missed this place after we've played a game…

Seriously, given the team we named for this tournament, raise your hand if you thought we would have made it to the quarter finals?

I'm not bothered by the result in the slightest, in fact we probably over achieved. As far as players go, I was impressed with Funaki and Liolevave, these boys will make their FG debut this year. Buchanan looked to be much improved from last year and looks to have developed more leg drive. Not sure about Lovett, he looks too small to cut it as a backrower and doesn't have the raw power of Funaki and Liolevave. Santi might be handy as a replacement lock forward as he's very fit and gets through a lot of work. Naqaima looked alright, Simona looked very strong in the legs but seemed to have lost all his pace and Drinkwater looks a handy backup if Brooks goes down. As for Lawrence, well he looks leaner but his pace is never coming back.

Bring on the trials...

The contrast in moods from Saturday night to last night on here was quite amusing. Saturday night after a couple of wins people were salivating, creating threads chucking all these kids in the first grade side in round 1, last night we read threads about what players need to be sacked. To say that the whole weekend caused people to react irrationally would be an understatement

This contest was only a blow out for a few of our players , I agree some looked good but we have a way to go yet , we did do well , better than I expected but the team that takes the field come round 1 I'm still not sure of ,Taylor still has a job to do yet but we do have some great young guys and some good back up players , if this teams stays positive and we can go around week in week out with little or no injuries we will compete
Come on round 1

Great review Pacman.

Pretty much the way i saw it although id give Drinkwater a higher rating than Fine. Sue would have been an 8, loving this guy the last 12 months.

Just on Akauola, i went into the tournament thinking he might be positioned out in the centres as i see him as an edge back rower. To me though he seemed to be running exclusively in the middle third of the field.

The trials will be interesting but its looking like his job will be to hit it up hard in the middle third and create the off load and second phase for Brooks and Moses to then go wide with?

Akauola is way too losoe in defense and has too many mistakes with the ball.
will make a good hard charge or 2 a game and people forget his mistakes.

Got back in Ozz land just in time for the Auckland Nines. It's such an entertaining tournament. Loved watching our team play, especially some of the new boys ( Naiqama Cherrington, Fine etc.) and old faces like Simona and Buchanan, Sue. played very well. The Sharkies were the surprise package for me. Wished they won it. Can't stand The Rabbitohs. It's great having the footy back

Mate it is dead and buried

Lets just leave it at that and not try and flame the embers

I think most peeps saw it for what it was…a good chance to see how our fringe players go. To win our group and jag 130 is awesome! I was really impressed with Sue....if he plays on the fringe/edge as we are led to believe he will be very dangerous with his strength and offload ability. Exciting times.

Oh Dear
This just confirms my point about your actual persona , argumentative , baiting people for more , belittling people over the net .

Your a very sad individual , not knowing when to let things rest.
I doubt you ever had a beer at a Pub with real Men , you wouldn't last if you were to bait people there .
But carry on….....

The Nines was a very popular event in my Sons house.
He went to the Tab on Saturday to put a $50 multi on the first game, but was too late to get it on . So instead he put it on Tigers and Sharks to make the Semis and picked up $1925 .
Nice!!!
