NO EXCUSES FOR POOR START TO SECOND HALF

Wests Tigers Head Coach Tim Sheens offered no excuses for the poor start to the second half in the loss to Manly at Bluetongue Stadium last Friday night.

A dominant first half performance saw Wests Tigers lead 8-2 at half-time at Bluetongue Stadium before Manly capitalised on a slow start, some unforced errors and the loss of second-rower Gareth Ellis to a cork injury to take victory.

“It started poorly with us with losing Gareth and we had to re-organise ourselves. We had a couple of mistakes and then all of a sudden we were in quick sand just trying to get ourselves going again,’’ Sheens said.

“We eventually did but we had to chase the score which was too hard. There were good signs from us for most of the game.

“It was a very good first half of footy from both teams and it was a quality game of footy. Our first 15 to 20 minutes of the second half were terrible and we self inflicted a bit through some drop ball, missed tackles and we didn’t complete.

“We kicked off and then had to go back to back. That really hurt us. I thought we steadied and came back into the game okay but the game was over by then.”

Wests Tigers Captain Robbie Farah said the team spoke at half-time about getting their completions right.

“We came up with a couple of drop balls and some soft tries back to back which probably lost us the game in that 15 minutes,’’ Farah said.

“Losing Gareth was a big loss but it still doesn’t explain why we conceded 14 points in 20 minutes. It wasn’t good enough.”

interesting article. Think it highlights two things for me.

1\. We aren't at the top of our game but are still more than capable of matching it with possibly the benchmark team so far this year.

2\. We aren't great at re-organising when an injury occurs. Similar issues when Tedesco was hurt.

Once things click we'll still beat most teams no dramas.

WTs and the ref made some errors in the second half that made life a lot easier for manly

1\. Humble's dropped ball
2\. Utai's dropped ball
3\. Fulton's unnecessary pass that was intercepted
4\. the pass to Lawrence that was called forward when it wasn't
5\. bomb caught over the tryline by Lawrence but the ball pulled out of his grasp by Williams

There were no doubt others that people will think of but these types of errors gave manly a big helping hand imo.

this period of the game was our weakness last year and in 2 games this year we've gone into halftime ahead only to fall behind and have to chase points late in the game. It is very concerning in my opinion, and needs to be rectified ASAP.

Everyone keeps saying that we will improve

15 other teams in the comp can improve as well

I agree.
all teams may take a little while to reach their potential this seaosn.

as for no excuses for poor start to second half,
don't let it happen again.
then there will be no reason for excuses.
