No Second Phase Play

I don't want to detract from tonight's efforts. Definitely a great win in adversity but why is it we cannot seem to generate second phase play? Is it coached out of us?

Souths were able to do it via Burgess and it carved us up. With our attack I would have though it would be one area that we would focus on.

Yep it must be. It does not make sense either with the likes of Brooks, Moses, Simona and Ted having explosive speed off the mark.

We don't seem to back up the ball carrier like other teams do ….I think it's more of a safety first thought process .

We make to many mistakes without pushing passes. A completion like tonight will go some way to giving Taylor the confidence to let some of the guys throw offloads.

For the first time in a very long time we got some second phase play happening through some good OFFLOADS

Rumoured to have been banned by Taylor, the offload reappeared a few time last night. I understand the dangers of loosing possession through senseless offloads, but all good teams have players with the ability to offload and set up second phase play. Like any other part of the game if you do not try it you will never get any good at it

As I said love a good offload

I noticed this too - would be a good element to bring back into their game. Frustrating seeing teams do this to us ALL the time and off the back of this usually putting themselves in good field position for a try. Good to see us give it back for once - Hopefully continues because it's a vital tactic, really.

A forward looking to offload is one of the hardest things on the field to defend against. Why we stopped doing it i cant understand. That dosent mean you do it every hit up but it should always be part of your attack

Aloiai's was a cracker…

Stats only say we had 3...but it felt like there was a bit more passing before the line as well as punching forward before side to side...

Honestly though scoring points isn't our issue. We score enough points we need to reduce errors and improve defence and I am guessing reducing the offloads is around reducing the errors

When Sirro first stared in the 2nd row he was trying to offload in every second tackle. A lot of balls went to ground or were knocked on. Sometimes there just wasn't anyone there. I can think of a number of 2nd row/ halves combinations that have worked well for the WTs in the 20's or NSWs Cup in recent years, but not in 1sts.

i think the main reason we dont have offloads is due to a lack of support runners. you can't offload if there is no one to offload to.
also, i dont mind putting the offloads on the back burner since some of our completion rates last month

Scissors looked a lot better last night running at their littler fellas and got away at least one good offload. I think he looked for a couple more, but wisely decided against.

Far and away our bust offloader is Dave, so try to give him some support. (I know, it's hard early in the set.)

nrlstats.com has the offload count at 23-3\. 3 is actually a decent return for us, especially given they were through the forwards from memory. We had a couple early on that put us right on the front foot and led to those early points.

I know Souths were chancing their arm after going so far behind, but it's been an issue with us all year - locking the ball up and preventing second phase. 7 offloads from Burgess alone is far too many.
