Driving Home for Christmas singer Chris Rea dies aged 74

RIP

Amazingly, Rea had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer at the age of 33 yet went on to live a most "driven" live, despite also operations on his liver and then a stroke later in life.

Married to his wife Joan with whom he had been in a relationship since they met as teenagers on 6 April 1968 in their native Middlesbrough, and with a daily morning ritual where each morning began with what Rea called an "elbow fight" over whose turn it was to make the coffee; after making the coffee, they would spend an hour together gazing out of their window at the countryside. Rea noted that during this quiet hour, despite being together for over 50 years, they still felt like they were 16 years old.

And here's how he wrote his famous song:
"The song's origins date back to 1978, when Rea was at London’s Abbey Road Studios. His record contract was nearly finished, and he had recently lost his manager and his driver's license.
The Journey: Because his record company refused to pay for a train ticket home to Middlesbrough, his wife, Joan, drove down in their old Austin Mini to collect him.
Writing the Lyrics: During the long drive home in heavy snow and traffic, Rea noticed the miserable expressions on other drivers. He began jokingly singing the line "driving home for Christmas" and scribbled down lyrics on a notepad whenever streetlights illuminated the car's interior."
