Arthur Stace, the man who chalked "Eternity" on Sydney footpaths for 37 years, died.
Ten years after he died, Ridley Smith, architect of Sydney Square, set the message ETERNITY in letters almost 21cm high in wrought aluminium, near the Sydney Square waterfall.
On 1 January 2000, the worldwide telecast of millennium celebrations showed the Sydney Harbour Bridge alight with the word 'Eternity' in flowing copperplate, still proclaiming Stace's message to the world.

30 July 1970, Petrol-starved motorists pictured queueing outside the Granville XL service station in the early morning for valuable supplies.

At least a hundred joined the line-up between 7 and 8am carrying jerry cans, four-gallon drums and plastic containers. July 23, 1970.

Workers at 11 Australian oil refineries went on a 10-day strike in demand of a 2.5% pay increase and an extra week of annual leave. According to Bob Hawke, leader of the A.C.T.U., the action concentrated on local oil companies under foreign control.

The strike caused a panic run on petrol, closed service stations, grounded flights, disrupted public transport and led to retrenchments in some fuel-dependent industries.
It also affected the supply of liquid petroleum gas used for cooking and heating people's homes.
