Nostalgia

9 August 1981

A day with a difference in certain Sydney and eastern suburbs streets.
More than 25,000 people set out enthusiastically in the world's largest foot race the annual 'City to Surf' community fun run from Park Street, near College Street, to Bondi Beach.

The journey of 14 kilometres took the fastest runner exactly 40.08 minutes while the less hurried competitors crossed the finishing line after about 2.5 hours.

Tania Verstak (RIP) was the most photographed woman in Australia in 1962 and even today most people from that era remember her name.

The most famous of all the Miss Australia’s, Tania was born in 1942 in Tianjin, China and came to Australia at the age of seven with her parents. She spent her childhood in Manly, attended Manly Home Science School, and by 16, blossomed into a stunning beauty.

She won five beauty quests including Miss Movie Ball, Miss Sydney University, Miss New South Wales, Miss Australia in 1961 and Miss International in 1962.

The little refugee child, who became one of the most recognised faces in Australia, married businessman
Peter Young and retired from public life to begin her family in Perth, WA.

Sadly, Tanya Verstak passed away this week, aged 85.
