This is awesome news…. Congratulations Liam and hopefully he gets a chance to impress those NSW Selectors!!!

Yes, great news for Liam, hope he has a blinder and scores a try running off Benji!

As for impressing the NSW selectors - never going to happen! You know how it goes - too many good
backrowers in front of him, blah, blah, blah…....... **oops we lost AGAIN!!!** 😕

Ain't that the truth…
Good luck, Liam! Go show the rest of them what we already know!

Fulton's All Star status isn't all luck
Ben Horne From: The Daily Telegraph February 02, 2011 12:00AM

LIAM Fulton might seem like the odd man out in the NRL All Stars side, but the Wests Tigers forward has worked too hard for his opportunity to be all luck.

The 26-year-old knows he's fortunate to have received a call-up after a groin injury ruled out Tigers team-mate Gareth Ellis and then an ankle problem scratched Chris Heighington, who was next on the list.

All Star selection requires one player from each NRL club to be represented (not including the Australian and New Zealand captains and two coach's choices), meaning Ellis needed to be replaced by another Tiger.

Fulton is the only player in the All Stars side without representative experience, but that doesn't mean the likeable back-rower hasn't earned his place to take on the Indigenous All Stars on February 12 at Skilled Park.

After breaking through as one of the game's promising young players in the Tigers premiership year in 2005, Fulton's progression was tempered when a serious shoulder injury brought his 2006 season to an abrupt end just minutes into round one.

Then in 2009 Fulton selflessly agreed to leave his beloved Tigers and move to English club Huddersfield for a year to alleviate salary cap issues at Wests and reinvigorate his game.

Fulton has experienced the harsh realities of rugby league, and now the wheel has turned to give him the chance on the big stage he deserves.

"That's what happens in rugby league, injuries come and everyone has their fair share, some more than others," Fulton said.

"When opportunities come up you've got to just grab them with both hands and do your best.

"I got lucky with Gareth Ellis and Heighington injured, but you take your chances.

"Playing in the All Stars is something I never thought I'd do, and getting the chance is up there with the best things I've done."

The Greystanes junior was 18th man for City Origin last year, after a strong return to the NRL.

He doesn't believe his place alongside Benji Marshall and Darren Lockyer will necessarily lead to further rep honours, but he's determined to take the experience he gains back to the Tigers as they make another tilt at the title this year.

"I don't expect to be one of those players that makes rep teams all the time but when I get a chance I'll just do my best," he said.

"(All Stars coach) Wayne Bennett is someone everyone respects in the game and to get to know him and play with guys like Darren Lockyer will be something I'll probably remember for the rest of my life.

"Hopefully I can gain a little more experience and it can make me a better player."

His Tigers mentor Tim Sheens has warned him the match will be like an Origin match.

"Sheensy said it probably won't be as tough but it will be right up there with a rep game. I haven't really played any rep games so I'm not too sure what it's going to be like," he said.

"Sheensy talked to me about it this morning and said the All Stars lost last year so Wayne Bennett wouldn't want to lose two times in a row."

Ellis and Heighington should be fit for the Tigers' start to the season.

**NRL to use All Stars game to experiment with rule to promote attacking play from deep in own half**

FOX SPORTS February 07, 2011 5:45PM

If Benji Marshall and Jonathan Thurston needed any more encouragement to chance their arm in the Rugby League All Stars match, they've got it, with the NRL to use the game to experiment with an exciting rule designed to promote attacking play from deep within a team's own half.

NRL Experimental Rule ChangeIf a player in possession of the ball in his team’s half of the field kicks the ball and it is re-gathered by him or any member of his team, the referee shall signal six more tackles for the team in possession provided that:

1\. The ball has traveled at least 5 metres in a forward direction (towards the opponent’s goal line).
2\. The kick has reached the point at which the previous play the ball (ruck) took place.
3\. The ball is regained by the attacking team prior to the half way mark. If the ball is kicked in the defensive half of the field but is regained in the attacking half, the referee shall not restart the tackle count.

The experimental rule will give the team in possession the opportunity for six more tackles if it kicks and regains the ball in its own half.

The All Stars will also include a number of special broadcasting changes including on-field microphones relaying the instructions of trainers Wendell Sailor and Brad Fittler, microphones in team huddles during first and third quarter team talks, a two-way link between the commentators and video referee to allow them to discuss decisions and the possibility of on field interviews with players after scoring plays.

"This spirit in which this match is played allows us to try a lot of ideas," NRL Chief Executive Mr David Gallop said.

"Not surprisingly in this match they all focus on promoting attacking play.

"Last year we trialled an extra tackle instead in lieu of a conversion and it was a lot of fun.
"They aren’t necessarily going to end up as rules in the NRL but they do give us an insight into areas that we can look to evolve in the game from time to time."

yuck, yeah don't like the new rule idea, the reffing was bad enough last year without adding more things in, at least it's only a trial run.

New rule for All Stars match unveiled by NRL
The NRL have announced that a new rule innovation that will encourage creative and attacking play will be tried for the All Stars match being played on February 12, at Skilled Park, Robina, on the Gold Coast.

The team in possession will get six more tackles if it kicks and regains the ball in its own half. The ball must travel five metres forward, and the attacking team must regain the ball prior to halfway to be awarded six more tackles. The kick must also reach where the previous play-the-ball took place.

This rule is expected to lead to an intriguing and entertaining game as the NRL seek to energise the public ahead of the season launch on March 11th. While unlikely rule changes have been tried before, the 40-20 rule and two referees on the field are recent changes.

Trainers for the All Stars game will be hooked up to microphones in a move

As well as Channel Nine coverage, the NRL will be streaming the game live online, via mobiles and on T-Boxes.

53,000 fans voted online to help select the two squads. Viewers will be able to vote for their Man of the Match online or via SMS.

New Rule Description:

If a player in possession of the ball in his team’s half of the field kicks the ball and it is re-gathered by him or any member of his team, the referee shall signal 6 more tackles for the team in possession provided that -:

- The kick has reached the point at which the previous play the ball (ruck) took place.

- The ball is regained by the attacking team prior to the half way mark. If the ball is kicked in the defensive half of the field but is regained in the attacking half, the referee shall not restart the tackle count

The All Stars were out St Marys way today and a number of schools got to attend. While I didn't get to go (bugger!) it made my day to see our school captain run over with his school footy jersey and say, "Miss! I got Benji Marshall to sign my jersey!! LOOK!!!" This is a kid who goes for the Warriors (IIRC). Well done to all involved!

with that new rule they are trying out i wouldnt be surprised to see benji put through some little kicks. im looking forward to this game

Come on Suzie surely you can convert him to the Wests Tigers, a school captain should know better- the warriors come on??????

I tried - I taught him in Yr 4 (2 yrs ago) and I managed to convert about half of them, but he's a tough cookie. I am going to start on the emotional blackmail now - you really should go for the tigers now that you have Benji's autograph. You know, if he's your favourite player, you should follow his team.

Could be worse

He could be a Souths fan
or a Dragons fan
or a Broncos fan
or a Storm fan
etc

You're right, MM, at least he's not a Manly fan!

Hopefully many people saw the game.

Apart from the obvious of Scott and Dugan, Gidley was pretty good as well. Marshall wasn't very active. However, he did a 1on1 tackle on Ryan James and thrashed him to ground. Good sign this.

However Dugan is a gun.

I still stand by my pick for Dugan at fullback for origin. He is just as dangerous as Hayne except he doesn't rely on the bounce of the ball or broken play to be effective. He is a much more complete player.

Liked the look of Benji and Fulton can't wait to see it in the Tigers outfit. I think the combo Benji has with Fulton and Ellis is vital to our success.

Mate I'd pick Dugan at fullback for NSW without hesitation. He's got that confidence, skill and aggression to succeed at that level, and he's an awkward player to tackle. While he's not as quick as Hayne in a foot race, he shows more urgency too.

Uate also went well last night and would not look out of place on the wing for NSW if he keeps improving IMO.
