I think the club has treated him poorly and this is his way of dealing with it.

Really? Even though he wanted 4 years, they offered him 3 at much better money than he was currently on. Mayer advised on the Game Plan last night that the money he was offered was more than that agreed originally by Humphries.

He is in average form and was offered plenty. I think there are people trying to paint the club in a poor light. I believe there would be people in the club that would be happy he is leaving as it frees up a large chunk of cash to build with.

Some of me wants to think the club has done poorly by him, but if that was the case then wouldn't they be better servved no to grant him his release? I don't want him to be bitter toward the club, and I personally think he should find a Super League club as I don't think he will enjoy rugby and there would be plenty of guys waiting to get him on the bottom of a maul.

I think there's truth in both sides of the argument. I don't think the club can be blamed for losing him, and I don't think he can be blamed for wanting out. I think it was just an unfortunate group of circumstances that led to neither party being very comfortable with the situation.

You are probably closer to the mark than most with that line of thinking, takes two to tango.

It was a pretty damming interview on the footy show last night (which is obviously where this article came from). But there are certainly some inconsistencies in Benji's story

1) Given a deadine to take the deal or leave - he has 2 years left on a contract? Tallis raised this last night on the panel of the footy show. Certainly doesn't make sense to me.

2) Did it for his family - I'm pretty sure Zoe was starting to get into TV from league? Also had a few appeances as a commentator on MMM. Plus, Benji obviously has big money deals with 9 and the Tigers. How is leaving all of that (and possibly having to uproot from Sydney) good for the family? Especially without another contract signed.

3) He preaches about loyality and taking paycuts. This happens all the time to blokes in clubs that gave them their first start and invested in them. Pretty sure Slater, Cronk and Smith took massive cuts to stay with the storm. How about that being payback for their faith by looking after him at 16 and through his injuries? How much payback does Benji need?

I love the guy and I'm going to cheer him on until he is no longer a Tiger. He helped build this club and we wouldn't be in the great place we are today without him. He should be remembered alogn the same lines as blokes like Pierce, Blocker and Siro.

But lets be honest, it's Benji's ego here that made him leave. It's the only rationale that I can see.

I second that post. Spot on.

While I thought the same and agree with your post, there's one thing I don't agree with. He will never have any connection to Pearce, Blocker or Siro, none of these guys ever played for Wests.

I actually think the club behaved in a most gracious & generous fashion towards Benji..& also professionally.
I dont believe in hindsight we should have done anything differently.
Sure,we cld have used Benji for one more season or two,& even offered to pay a premium price for that …but advised poorly ,he chose otherwise
Interestingly the big winner out of all this undoubtedly will be Wests, tho at times next year it may not fel that way.We have Moltzen(maybe!)Sirro,Anasta,Fulton & at least two young blokes to cover no 6 next year.
Benji will be both a winner & loser..he will take the japanese Rugby yen & run ......into oblivion like Craig Wing..Im gonna be interested to see how he goes at Super Rugby with the Melbourne rebels or Auckland blues, which will only end in tears(for Benji)shld he get that far
Classic case of Benji the brand(based on historical performances)significantly outweighing Benji the footballer

would like to see benji play in the nrl for another club after 2 years. esp with a good halfback and forwards that dominate. he could be a real gem after the 2 years imo

My GUESS is that he has issues with the club management that he is not prepared to air, or name names. He cannot work with people that he can't trust or respect. Those who say that the 'good for the family' issue doesn't add up, are right. All his current income is in Rugby League and in Sydney. This seems true for Zoey as well.

In any case, I've dug out the old 'Benji 06' t-shirt from the bottom drawer, and will be sitting on the couch at 11.30am French time listening to French commentary that I barely understand, and cheering for the one and only Benji Marshall to stand up and show the club what it is about to lose.

Go you tigers, play-offs bound!

The thing that pisses me off why did our old ceo sign him until 2015 and had a clause to get more money after the new rights deal that was one prob and why would he tell him you will get 1 million and get and upgrade without telling anyone but Benji Marshall.
