NRL Competition Committee

The idea of golden try sounds good in theory, but if a team knows that all they have to do is stop the other team from crossing the tryline they'll be able to constantly rush up and be offside in defense and it won't matter as long as they stop the other team from scoring a try. And we all know how hesitant the refs are to blow penalites in extra time.

It's really very simple how it should be. During the season, you either have no extra time, meaning it's a draw if the score is tied at full time, or you have a set ten minutes of extra time with no golden point. Whoever is leading at the end of the ten minutes wins the game. If it's still tied, it's a draw. During the finals you have the same set ten minutes of extra time. However, if they are still tied after ten minutes, they keep playing under the golden point rule, with a break after each five minute period.

I am happy for a point each after a draw. However, if the NRL (new ARL) prefers a result for competition games, I would submit the following:

1\. Two extra halfs of 5 mins each, golden try only. No field goals or penaltys to decide the result.
2\. At the beginning of each half, each team to drop a player. Interchanges to re-commence.
3\. With players rushing up and being offside or any infringements really, Ref to order an additional 6 tackles
to the non-offending team. This is the innovation suggested by Bennett for the All Stars game.
4\. At the end of the second 5 minute period, if scores are still tied, then a point each.
5\. For Finals, if still tied after 10 mins, a 5 min rest period then recommence further 5 minute halfs (still dropping a player) of golden point till you get a winner.

# three points for a win in normal time

# two points for a golden point win

# one point for a golden point loss

# one point each team if match drawn after extra time.

# 5 minutes each way in finals, if drawn after this, another 5 each way, then again if necessary. Each team should get a turn at both ends in Semi's

Always thought the reason for Golden Point was because it was too advantageous to draw a game… which meant a team could draw many games and still perform well in the season, despite potentially loosing more games than winning...

Sooo instead of increasing the points system to 3pts Win, 1pt draw... the NRL were too pig headed and opted for this dumb idea...

With that... I have warmed to it... and love it. Although the loosing team shouldn't go home empty handed... would love see a point system like this

3pts Win in normal time
2pts Win in extra time
1pt Draw / Loss in extra time
0pts Loss in normal time

Either way... 3pts should be given for a win... I hate the fact it is 2... it is dumb.
