NRL Hall of Fame 2024 Class

Ink you cannot compare Boyd and Benny in terms of thuggery. Boyd is so far in front of everyone else its just not funny.
It does beg the question though of how repeated thuggery / offenders were allowed to remain in the game. Dare I say it all in the name of publicity? Rather than the "good" in rugby league it is the worst that (some) people watch and (seem to) care the most..I don't mind players showing "controlled aggression" - when it translates to borderline criminal offending, it is time to have them out of the sport.

I never saw him play, I don't think foul play should rule guys out from that era.
Brohman needs to move on for his own sake.
I get why Darryl is pissed.
That intentional thuggery robbed him of rep jerseys, it shortened his career...he never got to play for his country. He should move on for his own mental health but celebrating the arsehole who did this was always going to open old wounds.

That was as ugly as it gets. No attempt at tackle that was direct aim with intent.
As for being added to Hall of Fame not up to me to judge - but that hit was more aligned to a hall of shame.
He did lots of crap like this, kicking blokes on the ground, always fighting and an eye gouge that cost him everything.
Purely as a footballer, he is Hall of Fame worthy. He did bring shame on the game a few times though and that probably should have disqualifyed him.

Times indeed have changed.
Players were fearful of Les Boyd's aggression ,which was a legitimate bonus for your side.
Lachlan Galvin can be ruled ineligible for rookie of the year due to a stint in the
sin bin .
Are the same judges being used?

I think based on this and what I've read so far, I think it's definitely worth debating.

I know this is an on field incident, but for eg someone like Hayne, I think is out of jail now, should be be considered hall of fame?

Definitely worth talking all this over, and Les is probably the right place to start.

Yep, sure is. PVL should come out and say, in retrospect , a poor decision to choose Boyd, and remove him from the list. Life is simple.

Im not comparing anyone to anyone..yes it was bad...Bob Cooper was bad too
The poms on the 70s and 80s Kangaroo tours was bad too...not to mention the refs.
Just saying many of the players we remember and celebrate dont have perfect scrapbooks...its part of the game and yeah Boyd went too far but as @gallagher said he did pay for it

What would the consensus say 5 years after he retired. Different eras so shouldn’t he get judged by that era
If the big marn didn’t have a media platform would there be as much debate about it

Well Boyd did two year long suspensions so obviously even his era thought he was a thug. A very good player but there's nothing tough about smashing someone's jaw with your elbow or eye gouging. I see (nor here necessarily) people calling Brohman a nobody. I think even Les Boyd himself said he should be grateful because that's the only reason people remember DB. This neglects the fact Brohman's career was on the rise when the incident happened. He was playing Origin and about to be picked for Australia. He could have had a long rep career. Les Boyd took that away from him. Yeah, I'd be a bit bitter about it too.

I am surprised
A very damaging 2nd rower when he first came to the Magpies,
But
A bit like Talmalolo from the Cowboys
Both were the best forward going around for 2 to 3 years and then came back to the pack.
Don’t get me wrong I loved going to Lidcombe Oval to watch Les in that period there was no one better.
I loved the Magpies whole forward pack from that era. Opposite teams left the field knowing they had a contest albeit win / lose.

Fair enough. Where do you draw the line though? Some of the names in that Hall of Fame have been sent off well into double figures. Just because it was a different era and judged differently doesn't mean it wasn't just as grubby.
I get that and it’s fair comment but there’s acceptable in a certain era and then there’s outright violent thuggery. I accept it’s a hard balance though.
