NRL must cut games and expand

Sorry mate , couldn't care what happens to the other 15 clubs to be honest , move the Titans to Siberia for all I care

If Richardson reduces the amounts of games you can reduce playing rosters and we could attract ex NRL players in the ESL players back to Australia and attract some actual English players with the extra funds in teams salary caps , only problem is our $ not worth what it was 2-3 seasons ago

My point is if two clubs were to be merged or made extinct , we would be high on the list at the moment

Less games doesn't mean less players…the ex players of quality that have gone to the ESL would equate to about 1...Todd Carney

Gee there are some hearltess gits on here..

I wouldnt wish anyone losing their team or having to merge.

if they wanna expand ,expand.

no more cuts,we have already taken that hit,

Done both Simon and no its not fun

But if clubs can't exist on a stand alone basis , they only have themselves to blame

You can't expect the NRL to prop up clubs just because they merged in the past , we picked our partners and if the clubs chose the wrong club to merge with well that's just too bad

This is a business , get better at it , don't run around like a Centrelink recipient or a beggar asking for handouts

With expansion clubs would have to work harder in player recruitment and development in order to preserve their existence. In addition the NRL would need to work harder at ensuring rules exist to stop rich clubs taking all the cream players otherwise the comp will become far too lopsided.

Businesses dont have supporters.

And these supporters go to the game and buy the products.

The NRL will definitely prop up teams that have large supporter bases and big TV ratings like we do.

We are no where near getting axed….look at our ratings and Friday night games we get.

Waits for scaremongering negative spin......

I'm not scaremongering at all Simon , I look at things and deal with reality

Just remind we supporters pay money to become members , buy merchandise , buy tickets to games and the clubs use that money to pay staff , bills etc

Sounds like a business to me , but what the hell would I know

yep we've done our bit

Surely they would be looking at Cronulla, Easts and Parra?

What is "our bit"

Not looking at this as a biased WST supporter, I would assume that we would be the first team OUT. We barely rack up big numbers at games, I think the only game we got big numbers at this year was vs. Parra and the crowd was 70% Parra supporters, we are in a decimating financial position, may I also add the majority of our "supporters" don't even support WST but support either Magpies or Balmain. The NRL wants to move forward and our club will be preventing it from doing so.

Don't get me wrong, I love this club and wouldn't support anyone else if we are one of the teams but I would assume we are the first team out.

Clearly our bit is merging already, time for someone else. Our supporter base goes beyond Sydney and given our games rate highly on TV, I would not think we would be the first considered.

If the NRL was actually serious about moving forward and expanding, then Easts, Sharks and Parra would have to be considered first.

Certainly Sharks and Parra if we're also going on recent on and off field form.

There is something we could do to secure our future but there are too many supporters that will continue to fight against a full time move to Orana Park.

If I had to get rid of Sydney clubs, it would be cronulla first, and penrith second.
Geographically, from north to south, it goes st george area, the shire, Wollongong. It makes sense for the dragons to have that all area.
As for penrith, their area can be taken over by parra and the tigers

Perth Rugby League clubs
\
\
Fremantle Roosters
Joondalup Giants
Kalamunda Bulldogs
North Beach Sea Eagles
Rockingham Sharks
South Perth Lions
South West Warriors
Willagee Bears
Mandurah Storm

These clubs are spread over around a distance of about 150kms x 40km

My son is 12 and wanted to join North Beach this year to play under 13's. Total number of registrations were 5\. Under 14's had a grand total of 1 register. He could fit in the under 16's, but for obvious reasons we decided that wasn't such a good idea.

So, we have gone up to Joondalup Giants which has a team of 17 including him. 2 or 3 others are also in that team who were part of the 5 at North Beach - they've made the shift as we have. Oh, and at least 3/4 of the players are kiwis.

My point is this. The people that think Perth is a good idea to have a team here don't get it. There is next to no support for the code. Maoris love the contact codes but the anglo locals and for that matter aboriginal locals are totally anti everything league. It would be absolute madness to try again here with expectations of some magical success story.

It would be far better to go to Gosford and/or QLD in my opinion. And on a side note, the more QLD teams there are, the weaker the Broncos would be which would make me even more happy.

So, we have gone up to Joondalup Giants

I played juniors at the Giants, my elder brother through to firsts and my dad was president for a while, it's a great club that's pretty close to my family. Haven't been involved for a few years now though so I'm surprised to hear North Beach struggling, they along with South Perth had always been top of the tree when I was there, player poaching and all.

What you've said aside, WA is still the next largest market for rugby league outside of NSW and Queensland, even ahead of Victoria, but we have no support or infrastructure from the NRL. The WARL tries, bless it, but they can't do it all themselves.
If there was a more established pathway for young kids to follow and aspire to, I think we could definitely see an upward trend of league in the west. There's plenty that have made it, eg. Paterson, Holdsworth and Rona, with a couple running around in NYC (including a former teammate of mine, Jesse Offen-Maxwell at Manly) but the fact that they're from our system gets lost completely. We need to be trumpeting it almost as much as the Obed Kharwin story.
It's the old saying, 'build it and they will come'.

The only way is to promote before making the decision. More games here are needed - a lot more than 2 per year which is currently the case. Maybe every club should commit to one game per year. Or perhaps a few double headers on the split round weeks around origin. As it is, there's no promo. 4 weeks back nth beach had a coaching clinic for the kids. Dallas Johnson, Steve Turner and Terry Lamb. But that's about the extent of things promo wise really. I hear that Ellenbrook now has a club. (Rabbitohs) and this is a likely reason for the reduction in numbers for nth beach even given the significant distance between the two areas.

why the hell are people talking about parramatta as a club that will be relocated or merged?

laughable at best, they have the 2nd highest membership in sydney. averaged just under 19,000 last year despite finishing outside of the 8, and 2 woodenspoons and a 2nd last finish in the last few years. 2nd highest in sydney, 3rd highest in the NRL.

 at them getting moved

And talk of merging Penrith is rubbish

In 5 years time they will have the best junior program in the NRL bar none with daylight second

Dont agree with cutting Games.

I would like the season longer - Feb to November.

If people whinge at playing a game for a living they can swap with me working in management for a Global IT company writing reports till 1 am.

If we do Spartan , we have to increase the league minimum wage

it pretty much is February to november. 9s, trials, WCC in febuary. Season march-october and internationals in november, sometimes through to december with RLWC.

'playing a game' yeah because repeatedly running into 110kg behemoths is 'playing a game'

what they do is far more physically demanding, its a full time job and the time spent not playing for your entertainment is spent doing preseason training.

even disregarding that, overplaying players will lead to injuries and players unable to play in finals and rep seasons (as we saw in the 4nations last year).

it will almost undoubtedly be shortened in terms of games played, but played over a similar timeframe to now. that way we give more importance to rep footy and dont detract from the NRL during origin

The comment wasn't one of my more serious ones, I just love footy and my Tigers almost too much such that I get withdrawal during the warmer months.

A few extra rounds won't hurt anybody..

You have professional sporting teams overseas (soccer, basketball, ice-hockey) who play 60-70 games during a season (up to 3 games a week at times), and their off-season breaks are shorter then NRL.

Their sports may not be as physical as league, but they are as demanding due to the constaint physical strain put on their muscles/joints.

Reduce training sessions if fatigue is a factor.

Off-Season break comparison..

EPL - 80-90 days
NHL: 118 days
NBA: 136 days
NRL: 180 days

NRL teams play almost 1/3rd the amount of games as those other codes, but have an extra month or 2 break until the first Rnd of the new season.

Don't see what all the fatigue fuss is about. This ain't the iron man series.

Tigers
Souths
Roosters
Manly
Cronulla
Parra
Penrith
Bulldogs
Saints
Raiders
Storm
Broncos
Titans
Cowboys
Warriors
Newcastle
New team 1
New Team 2

Everyone plays each other once, Three stand alone state of Origin, Finals series moves to top 10, With top 5 receiving financial incentives, Bottom eight to be given first crack at a rookie draft. (payments to be made to club where junior is from) New teams to be given higher salary cap. (to offset lack of ability to claim salary cap exemptions i.e. long standing clubmen)

Because the state of origin games are stand alone, this will give players resting weeks, and in return we could reduce the size of the squads or the use of tier two contracts. Therefore the player pool would not have to inflate to much.

As in Melbourne, if there is a successful first grade side, it will help grow the grass roots football. (Although personally id have the Brisbane and NZ side first. As these have swelled markets already)

The rookie draft with payments made would help the spread of youth and would allow a viable financial incentive for either a) junior clubs without an NRL side to continue to grow a stronger semi professional league or b) Reward clubs with a junior development. Clubs could make a choice to partake in junior development or not, and a club could be financially profitable regardless if it tries to win off top 5 incentives or invests in the rookies markets.

If everybody plays each other once, it builds rivalries, and keeps league integrity. The extra finals series and two new teams would make it the same amount of rounds.

Personally I would have the state of origin over 3 months having one game a month. State of origin peaks interest, suspensions and injuries would be less of a worry, and it would create more selection talk hence drawing more attention to what is to a lot of people the showcase of Rugby league.

Im sure there are issues I've missed…. should we move onto the shoulder charge???
