Just an outstanding talent.
Yep I’m tipping he will surpass Tedesco as the best fullback in the game in time. We actually had 2 once in a generation players...who would’ve thought!
How bad is that.. Some pretty poor retention there, that’s an understatement.
To be fair though Pap looked pretty ordinary in his lower grade games for Balmain Ryde Eastwood or whoever it was. Hindsight is 20/20, he most certainly didn't look anything too special back then.
Very true, you're right, we didn't really notice him - he was small and probably looked more of a fringe player with possible potential. I feel similar about Tedesco - sure he's good, and would always have been good, but we can't be sure he would've excelled here. Being at the Roosters I think has improved his game.
This is very incorrect.
Paps was a stand out in all his junior games.
Came into the 20’s younger then most after sg ball season and was played on the wing.
Unfortunately he remained on the wing for quite a while bet before that point everyone ‘those who regularly watch the juniors’ was expecting big things for Paps when he grew into his body a bit more.
Now I will say this.
Had 2017 played out differently and Teddy signs with the Roosters after we sign Paps as his successor or whatever order.
There is no way I would be confident that he would of looked anywhere near the player his is at the moment having been thrown into our side start of 2018. With Teddy no longer at the club he had no one to mentor him. And please don’t say Hodgo, like really what does he do for our players.
Paps entered Melbourne at a time there was a number of young fullbacks auditioning for the future role knowing full well he would be trains and mentored by the best of the best.
Great career move for him, and I dare say he would of killed his early staying with us.
End of story.
Maybe we should have hired someone who 'regularly watches juniors' then, because it doesn't look like anyone at the Tigers was watching in that case.
I'd say it's because they were so focused on Tedesco, it was easy to let Paps slip. Much like the fan base who I don't recall being at all concerned about him leaving the club - even after Tedesco left. At the time I recall we were in with a shot at Ponga (had Tedesco made his intentions clear earlier) and I think more disappointment was directed at that missed opportunity instead.
I agree he likely wouldn't have reached the heights he's achieved now, had he stayed. We don't know this for certain though and in any case he'd have been a handy player to have nonetheless.
