Did not think we needed LM standing, looking out with an aboriginal flag draped over him.

This is a football ad, not a political statement - one day they will get it right.

Cam as a kid ....didn't need it.

It’s his flag representing his people. Bet you wouldn’t have an issue if Liddle was there draped in the Australian flag.

I wouldnt have minded if Latrell was draped in the Aussie flag, representing his people, Australians.

Outrage culture.
Easily offended...

Won't sing the anthem.
The N stands for National in NRL.

But yet there’s outrage in response to the ad. See the irony?

There's outrage then there's faux outrage which the woke crowd tend to gravitate their virtue signalling towards.

Don’t like it, don’t watch

So I looked up what woke means, as it seems to be a hip internet buzzword. Seems like it applies to those complaining about it just as much. Ad needs more white men apparently.

I think RU has done something like this in the past including all cultures but not the gay stuff.

I would really love it if Tedesco came outta the closet and rep that rainbow flag proudly. That's the game changer... openly gay teddy, gun fullback.... we accept everyone in the NRL

Didn't Teddy hit on one of his Italian team mates girl...?

I’m just over everything in life being made into a statement. It’s an advertisement for the game of rugby league. Just leave it for god sake... I’m over all this indigenous and same sex relationship crap being shoved in my face. I don’t care wether your proud of your heritage or proud of being gay or whatever... I come here to watch league. Full stop. Just over it. Blow the freaking whistle already.

Wouldn't have a problem if it was an ad for the Indigenous game... but it's not.
Didn't notice Alex Twal with the Lebanese flag did you... or all the Polys with their flags?

No I didn’t, but I wouldn’t have minded if they did.

Don’t bother arguing with the boomers. They’re upset over a flag the poor things. Apparently people aren’t allowed to be proud of their culture.

I don't think it's a "boomer" thing. The fact it has people arguing about these issues shows that it's too political in the first place.

In fairness, I can't see the relevance of someones sexual preference or culture to the talent they have in the game. Can't we watch the spectacle rather than have politics shoved down our throat all the time...I just think people want a place they can go to get away from all the different opinions and just be brought together by something they have in common - the great game of Rugby League.

I'm not having a shot at you...it's an overall observation. I've just quoted your post for relevance.

By your logic, Falou and his comments have no place considering the arguments that he causes. Be consistent.

Correct...Folau should not be in any NRL ad spouting his views...

Great sidestep, but you still come up short. You said the fact it has people arguing shows it’s too political. So do his comments, but you commend them and tell people to get over it. If you don’t want politics in sport, then it goes for all forms of politics. Not just what upsets you personally.

His comments were made on his own personal Instagram, not plastered up on an NRL ad played regularly on television intending to sell the sport

Ad’s ok. It is what it is. As stated previously, we keep preaching to the converted the sport will never grow.

This song to me is the only song that I associate with the sport when I hear it, so it’s nice to have it back.

Good thing I’m already a fan of the sport. ?

But, if it’s going to bring a new audience to the sport, I welcome it.

Honestly I think you've totally missed the point.

The NRL are not really making season 2020 ads to cater to the average white male of their core demographic. Nobody on here and nobody reading the back pages of the SMH or DT, or logged into the NRL website, fails to be aware that there is a NRL 2020 season coming up soon, nor that it involves footballers tackling each other. The NRL does not need to advertise to its core market, but it does show little snippets of supporter bases, some Tigers on the hill at LO etc. Just little snippets to whet the appetite of the existing supporter.

No, the NRL ads are primarily to appeal to the non-core rugby league followers - women, minorities, immigrants, children. The people who don't really follow NRL, who wouldn't know that the new season is starting. The ads are intentionally showing diversity and emphasising inclusiveness and rights of minorities - they are appealing to those who don't feel part of the "average" rugby league supporter base. Yeah it might be a bit heavy-handed in that regards, but there are plenty of morons out there and sometimes it doesn't pay to be subtle or clever.

If you want an ad about just big boofheads tackling each other and doing sit-ups, then transport yourself back to the 1980s and watch those old ads.

And I think you are also hugely misguided to think that the NRL is not and should never be politicised. There is literally no large organisation in this country that doesn't have some form of politicisation, whether it's because they are publicly-owned, dealing with shareholders or trying to appear to advertisers. The motive that has the NRL putting female footballers and Aboriginals front and centre in ads is the same motive that has the Rugby Union banning Izzy Folau, or AFL banning racist fans, or cricket suspending ball tamperers - it's all about maintaining the reputation of your brand. It's the same motive that had the NRL hiring Macklemore, or starting women's football, or publicly supporting same-sex marriage, or initiating women's round or running the All Stars game.

Do you think the NRL hosts the All-Stars game for some altruistic rationale, or some power-broker at Foxtel demands it, or because it pulls huge audiences? Hell no, it's 100% about recognition of a small but core contingent of the NRL's workforce (~12% indigenous), appealing to future indigenous juniors and smart business for brand management.

I scrolled down and saw an essay...not going to read it. Sorry mate. Too long

Weak

I think it's a fair reply. Some posts are just way too long to read.

It’s also an easy out when you can”t think of a counter argument

I think that poster intentionally writes long boring posts to make the other person submit. I have given up on conversations because o f continuous long posts that I never read.

Spot on...so tiring. I’d already stated my position, so wasn’t going to try and convince someone that is unlikely to be convinced.
