Not Governmental politics though…

What is the difference between "politics" and "governmental politics"? I don't follow your argument. Kept this one short for ya.

Cochise referred to the political infighting WITHIN the game when Rugby League split from Rugby Union.

I was merely making the distinction between same-sex marriage politics (Government) and organisational politics.

Hope that clears things up.

What is the purpose of the add? My view is that an add made by the NRL should have a couple of primary purposes.

1. To increase participation at junior levels. My view it probably fails. While there are a few snippets of kids playing, I think the only shot of an organised junior game is Thurston.
I doubt that combining the women’s game with a gay pride message will lead to a rush of parents signing their daughters up to play.

In saying that there are separate adds that encourage kids participation.

2. Attract new fans. The add shows snippets of games mixed in with historical events. The context is probably only understood by rusted on fans or those prepared to research history.

The best way to make the game attractive to new fans is to showcase the skill of players, the excitement of a contest or the enjoyment of a group of fans.

To grow its fan base (particularly in Sydney) the NRL needs to attract more women and migrants from countries without a rugby background.

3. Bring back rusted on fans. Someone has suggested that these are traditionally white middle aged men. I think the posts here suggest that the add failed.

On those counts I would say the add fails. I would like to see someone explain what the intention was, who it was pitched at, and how the images chosen match that.

It is an advertising version of the movie from dusk to dawn, but instead of bank heist/vampire, it is footy history/social justice.

Fans’ ire forces NRL to revamp controversial TV ad campaign

Michael Carayannis

The NRL has revamped its much publicised advertising campaign after it drew widespread criticism following its launch on Monday night.

The Daily Telegraph has learnt the NRL have backtracked from elements of the advertisement which they say were wrongly interpreted as political statements.

There was much excitement celebrating the return of the Simply the Best moniker 30 years since it was originally launched by Tina Turner in what is considered Australia’s greatest sporting campaign.

But the revamp was widely panned with 74 per cent of more than 4500 fans in a Daily Telegraph poll saying it had missed the mark.

Some were unhappy with what they saw as being overtly political.

NRL’s chief commercial officer Andrew Abdo said the changes would reflect feedback from the fans but argued that the original ad was “just as polarising”.

“We weren’t given a directive to change it,” Abdo said. “We are reacting to the way some people interpreted elements.

“This is about getting people excited for the season. This is not a political campaign. Our intention is not to create a political debate.

“We want to live up to our mantra that everyone is welcomed and everyone is welcomed to their opinion. If people didn’t think it was an accurate portrayal of course we will change it.

“It’s not because we’ve been told it. We are listening to our fans.

“We are changing elements that people feel portrayed a negative.”

The attempt to unite the game was wide of the mark.

The voiceover around the Super League moment has changed to show a reunited code while other elements will be “sharper”. The new advertisement could be relaunched as early as Wednesday.

“I was surprised that certain elements of the campaign were interpreted the way some people have,” Abdo said. “You have to respect that. We want to make sure we’re focusing on the positives and the original intent of the campaign which is to reflect on a remarkable 30 years in a remarkable sport.”

The video takes a look at some of the biggest headlines in the game’s past three decades including the Rabbitohs’ return, Newcastle’s 1997 win, Scott Sattler’s tackle in the 2003 grand final and Benji Marshall’s flick pass in the 2005 premiership decider.

High profile players including the Trbojevic brothers, Tyson Frizell, Cody Walker and Latrell Mitchell feature.

Coronavirus causes chaos for Socceroos, Sydney FC

The NRL worked with creative agency The Monkeys for the advertisement which took more than a year to produce. The longer-form advertisement is part of a wider advertising strategy which will include 30-second advertisements which Adbo said will be purely on-field focused.

There will also be a documentary about the makings of the advertisement and outdoor advertisements.

“There are so many elements to this campaign,” Abdo said. “We are getting judged on just one. The whole point of the ad was that it is 2020. It’s been 30 years and we will never replicate (the Turner ad). It was so special. Let’s celebrate history and guess what, in over a week it happens again.

“The original campaign in 1990 was just as polarising. It got quite a lot of negative publicity and people speaking out about an American woman being the voice of rugby league.

What a load of crap from the NRL. If it’s all about “everyone” is included, than why isn’t Israel Folau allowed to play ? I’m pretty sure everyone sees the groups of men who gather and pray in the middle of the field No matter which team they play for. I didn’t see probably the largest demographic in the NRL being advertised.

Typical NRL move.

No different to the excitement you feel heading off to watch a game. Loving the sport you grew up watching then feeling flat and empty at the end of the game when a dud referee call sees your team lose the match. Or the inconsistencies at the judiciary. or the high powered lunches with favoured players Greenberg thinks are more important than the guy from your club.

The game is run more professionally which is great but it is consistently failing the pub test. Close to great but just ends up being good.

Its a good add. Thats it. The PC aspect it stops it from being great.

Hopefully the person who replaces Greenberg makes a point of giving the game back to the people. The people who turn up every week to support it. Its possible to grow the game and keep the rusted on fans happy at the same time. All you have to do is make them a priority as well.

what a terrible add over political with the Latrell piece and the preston Campbell snippet really ?
To top it off the gay pride message why is that needed in this add.
liked the flick pass and snippets of newcastle gf and things like that and also the song itself

Seems Andrew Abdo got Pareto’s principle upside down? It was only 20% of people who liked his idea of rudely dovetailing his political agenda into what has been a leisurely family pastime. The other 80% prefer their hobbies and sport to remain just that.

It also fails there too...Tom Turbo was born in 1996..so he wouldn't be running round the backyard during the SL war..El Masri's last game was in 2009 not Belmore 2010

It's something the NRL are not good at they are asleep behind the wheel and need to wake up and concentrate on the major issue in the game
for starters GRASS ROOTS ,CRL

Just saw the ad. What a storm in a teacup.
It's hardly political because there are 3 seconds of an aboriginal flag and a still image of a kiss.

Lucky some of you aren't entitled whingers like the woke crew, oh wait.....

It is what it is. I don’t think they should have changed course, but i’m not going to throw my toys out of the cot because they did something I don’t agree with like everyone who moaned about the ad. More important things to worry about, like how we’re going to beat Saints. Bring on the footy.

To me the misuse of the word is just another example of how the political agenda of the USA has been parroted by the walking dead in OZ. Many of these people don’t even know why they are angry. 😂
If you are woke, it follows that you are aware of racism, specifically the oppression of African Americans.
As I say, this is a Marxist plot. The Democrats originally tried to suppress African Americans through their KKK but when given the vote the Dems suddenly wanted them as new best friends.

Ive got a few questions, Why would the nrl want to make the ad political like just why cause these days people are just going to get upset over everything and its bound to upset someone, and why does mitchel have to let every one know he is aboriginal and always got to display that he is, I understand he is proud but so is everyone else about their nationality don't understand why he gotta be extrinsic abut it

I really don't mind the ad...its just that an ad,however I did watch it again and can see the negatives people are talking about...

the one piece you mention about Mitchell....young Aboriginal girl singing "your simply the best'"while Mitchell stands there donning the Aboriginal flag can be interpreted as him being the best rather than a heck of a lot of players who worked hard to get to that level ..and is being Aboriginal simply better than any other nationality..????

75% of the Murdoch bugle not liking it says it all, as that is where most of the noise is coming from. More concerned about the inaccuracies that nobody at headquarters noticed and wish they put in a bit of prayer time so they could have kept the ad as is.
