For people new to it the basic idea in setting up a team is to fill it with a mix of expensive, high-scoring players (i.e. Parker, Thurston, Sam Burgess etc.) and cheap players who will go up a lot in price. This season the obvious cheapies are Jackson Hastings, Ashley Taylor (following the injury to Kane Elgey) and Jayden Nikorima (thanks Mitchell Pearce). If you don't have Jackson Hastings in your team at the start you are doing it wrong (unless he gets injured between now and season's start). As the cheap players go up in value you trade them in and upgrade in other positions, but you have to be conservative with your trades because you have a limited number and they have to cover injury and bye periods as well as upgrades.
Forwards generally put out more consistent scores than backs because they have high base stats (from tackles, hit ups and offloads and the like). Backs rely more on attacking stats (tries, assists, line breaks, tackle breaks etc.) so if they have a quiet game they will score poorly, but they can also have huge games if they lay on a few tries/assists. There are exceptions like RTS, Mansour and Teddy that tend to have solid base stats through the number of tackle breaks they get on kick returns. Because of their consistency people tend to prefer having forwards on their bench each week (if they can afford quality forwards).
To make money (other than getting obvious cheapies) look for players that are going to improve on last season through: a change of position (e.g. Blake Ferguson to fullback); a change of club (e.g.Tim Lafai to the Dragons); increased minutes (second rowers playing 80 minutes under reduced interchange); a change in the quality of players around them (e.g. James Roberts, Konrad Hurrell etc.); or a return from injury/suspension (e.g. Ben Henry, Brenton Lawrence, Kirisome Au'va).
If you want to take it really seriously then you also need to factor in coverage for bye rounds from the outset so you don't burn too many trades at origin but really, who could be bothered…

I assume The Nelsons is you Nelson...nice breakdown BTW...just remember as this is a 20 team comp head to head matches continue through the BYE and Origin Rounds as Nelson pointed out teams need to be planned or you can burn through trades quickly...

If NRL made season 2016 a 17 team comp and let the Penalty Pullers enter…I reckon I'd be wearing a Premiership Ring in October.
Just have to get Nick Politis on board to get all my players out of there existing contracts. Shouldn't be a problem for Nick, he'd have six weeks to sort it.

The NSW Origin halfback had a cracking season last year, averaging 52.55 at 0.68 PPM, which is rock solid. To be honest the three years previous have been just as good: 55.86, 54.35 and 56.70 respectively but if you ask me, solid isn’t what you want with a halfback - we want upside.
