NSW Premier Kristina Keneally has today announced funding grants for WIN Jubilee Oval at Kogarah, and Belmore Sports Ground.
>
**WIN JUBILEE OVAL**
WIN Jubilee Oval at Kogarah – the home ground of the 2010 NRL Premiers the St George Illawarra Dragons – will be given a **$13 million** funding boost from the NSW Government.
>
The funding will go towards a range of new facilities including a northern grandstand with 1,372 undercover seats, toilet and concession facilities, new change rooms for first grade and Under 20s players, new corporate area and boxes, and a new museum and merchandise outlet.
>
**BELMORE SPORTS GROUND**
Meanwhile, the NSW Government will also invest $2.5 million for the upgrade of Belmore Sports Ground to provide the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs with a permanent training base.
>
The funding from the NSW Government will go towards the completion of Stage 1 of the $8.4 million Belmore Project, and is set to include permanent training facilities for the Bulldogs, upgraded change rooms and amenities, conversion of old office and function rooms into multi-purpose facilities for community use, new ticket offices and entry gates, an upgrade of Peter Moore playing fields, and general works to the roof, fencing, and lighting.
>
The Federal Government and Canterbury City Council have contributed a combined $5.9 million for the project.

$13m for that shithole

The old Kogarah Jubilee Oval has had 3 major revamps in the last 20 odd years and now it's going to recieve more!, must be a marginal Labor electorate.
The first of the revamps in the late 80's saw the Dragons play out of the SCG and Belmore and there have 2 more since then, the old Steelers Stadium also has had a lot of work done on it in recent years and is now getting a new stand.
Apparently the old stand was in pretty poor shape but guess who the local member was, David Campbell of Ken's of Kensington fame (shame), what was once a safe Labor seat will now be a marginal one too, is this pork barrelling?.

So for Kogarah, St George get $13M from Keneally on top of the $8M from Howard and another $8M from Iemma and $1M from Carr… plus $29M to upgrade Wollongong. Geez... they must have some pretty good lobby groups!

Instead of overpriced school halls and burning down houses, imagine if we spent just the waste component of these on upgrading ALL our sporting facilities nation wide!? We wouldn't need to worry for the next 40 years!

Haha, I think when Honest Johnny Howard was in power he tried to turn it into a marginal liberal seat with that caper.

Having said that, Leichhardt is part of league folklore, and they can't scrape together a cracker for renovations that will turn the stadium into a class venue to watch league. For christs sake, all Leichhardt needs is some half decent toilets and few minor touch ups. No red blooded league fan would want to see Leichhardt fully redeveloped into a concrete mecca.

Isn't Leichhardt council a problem when it comes to doing anything to Leichhardt oval?

Well it is, but why is it that Kogarah Oval has received over 20 million dollars over the last decade or so at the state and federal level (most of which when said premier and prime minister are Saints fans,) and one of the Wests Tigers spiritual homes gets shafted?

Hardly seems fair, and we'd compete in terms of fanbase.

I agree it isn't fair and I would suggest Leichhardt is just as famous a ground as Kogarah if not more so. It must have something to do with the politics of the area though. Campbelltown hasn't suffered too badly. Could be worse, could have to go to Brookvale oval more than once a year.

I quite happy that Campbelltown got the money together for upgrades… I'd like to see a premier throw 20 million into both LO and CS instead of feasibility studies and scrapped railways and the like.

At least the community would benefit from wholesale upgrades to both venues where we have proven attendance figures compared to most other Sydney teams.

I'm very happy Campbelltown got an upgrade, should have gone further, should play more games there as well. Leichhardt definitely needs a fair go at the moment.

No satisfying some people.

The NSW government redeveloped one of our grounds to the tune of $70m in 1988 and our other home ground has received over $40m from various levels of government over the past 12 years.

Let's not be greedy and be grateful for what we have.

agree with cultured bogan about leichardt and its own character. upgrade the toilets, re-furb the outer ground seating and improve parking, if possible. leichardt IS the best suburban ground in sydney. all parties ' pork barrell ' just ask lil' _honest_ johnny and the dough he splashed out on cua stadium to look after jackie kelly's seat a few years back. buts that politics !

I had no idea Gary. $70mil? I'm interested which oval it was. I was a bit young in 88 so don't know about it.

$70mil in '88 should have got you quite a few 20 bedroom mansions with marble bathrooms, a couple of spas, saunas and a top 100 golf course in the backyard. Surely that must be cambo and include the train station or something? At the end of the day, it's a tiered concrete platform, good drainage and some turf.

I'm very surprised there was $70 mil lump sum spent on either ground.

Didn't Balmain play in the first ever Grand Final at this $70m ground. you would think most of you Leichhardt boys would know the history of your GF appearances unless your name is Ellery of course. Should have ducked…
