The NSW Rugby League today confirmed it will run a 10-team NSW Cup competition in 2021 in line with the NRL competition.

NSWRL Head of Football Robert Lowrie said the full home and away second tier competition will kick-off the same weekend as the NRL.

“We are really thrilled to be able to announce that our premier competition will go ahead after the COVID-19 pandemic forced us to cancel it this year,” Lowrie said.

“The competition provides an important pathway to the NRL. Many open age competitions operated in New South Wales during season 2020. Much was learnt about COVID-19 protocols and confidence was gained about the capacity to safely conduct competitions in a COVID-safe way.

“We are therefore very confident of our ability to deliver all of our competitions safely and efficiently during the 2021 season. Additionally, we are working with an NRL representative from the Apollo Committee to construct bio-security protocols to mitigate risk and to enable player movement between the NRL and NSW Cup.”

At our season launch on 3 March 2021, we expect to be able to announce exciting news about a new naming rights partner for our premier competition.

This is excellent news. Really happy to have reserve grade back next season. Was 12 teams this year now only 10 next season, I know mounties has merged with bulldogs but not sure about the other team who isn’t playing

Strange, too, they say it's a 10 team comp but don't name the teams.

Finally! This is great news for rugby league in general and I expect Magpies will be fielding a team.

Those that played JF in 2019 and/or still eligible for 21s in 2021 will now get a chance to show what they've got at a higher level with NSW Cup which was not possible in 2020.

Expect some talent to shine through most don't know we have!

A lead in to the next NRL team, the WA Great Whites, replacing the gummy sharks.

This really is excellent news!

If the comp went ahead this year we'd be in a much stronger position next year. At least our kids won't miss out on another year's development.

As others have stated this is great news. Especially given how our club is positioning itself to develop young talent we need this competition up and running again.

Pretty sure the Perth Pirates only have teams in Jersey Flegg and SG Ball.
If the NRL continues to dilly dally around the good opportunity it currently has to include a Perth team will completely disappear. They've been dangling the carrot for 6 or 7 years now.

Longer. The Force are back in the super rugby so the NRL will just keep it in the too hard basket.

Very glad to hear NSW Cup will go ahead, it will be so important for fringe players and rising stars to get game time and remain match fit. Hopefully it leads to less injuries next season also.

It was a bit confusing why it never came back towards the end of the year when even junior sport was back up and running.

It didn't fit in with the biosecurity measure for the NRL, looks like with a longer lead in till next season they will be able to accommodate those measure if they are still needed next year.

You won't be popular in your local area saying that ?

Absolutely, but they are such an entitled crew of supporters. Remember the huge grant courtesy of the former Federal MP for upgrade of their ground? Bruce Baird arranged it. We have to go begging for areas representing the inner west and one of the largest land release areas in Sydney. Never mind the land the Council donated for use for rugby league which now has those very ugly eyesore developments on them.

BIG Wests Magpies News for Season 2021
Wednesday 11 November 2020

Wests Magpies returning to spiritual home of Lidcombe Oval and new NSWRL Participation for 2021

A Message to Members and Supporters of Western Suburbs District Rugby League Football Club (WSDRLFC)

Western Suburbs Magpies is excited to advise its members and supporters of some notable changes planned for the club as well as new competition participation for Season 2021.

Western Suburbs Magpies has secured a hire agreement with Cumberland Council for 2021 to make Lidcombe Oval our primary home ground for training sessions and most match days.

In addition to our continuing participation at the highest level in the NSWRL (which is the NSW State Cup), the club is also planning on fielding a team for the Ron Massey Cup (which may become a City team/Country team Presidents Cup format in 2021).

WSDRLFC has taken the initiative to get the mighty Magpies back to their much-loved spiritual home and has developed a self-supporting business model to field a RMC team without further financial impost on Wests Ashfield Leagues who are primary financial supporters of the Magpies and continue to heavily invest in Rugby League propagation and development.

Although COVID has affected many Rugby League teams and competitions, we hope for some form of normality with competition structures in 2021. This includes request to NSWRL for alignment to all Magpies grades wherever possible to ensure optimal patronage. Pending COVID situation in 2021, Wests Magpies NSW State Cup team will still feature as curtain raisers to selected NRL Matches. TV Coverage for NSW State Cup 2021 is not certain at this time but the Magpies will be there somewhere on your screens.

Although not finalised at this time, a NSWRL Ron Massey Cup 2021 Competition (like what took place in 2020 Presidents Cup) will see the Western Suburbs Magpies travel to face teams throughout Country NSW and potentially over to Fiji. This competition is also planned to be streamed on-line for promotion and to assist those unable to attend in person to follow the team throughout the season.

After some years out of the Dressing room sheds, our current General Manger Leo Epifania will return to head coaching role for new Western Suburbs Magpies RMC team. Being Magpie Head Coach is something Leo believes is his greatest strength. Importantly, the club is also re-building a group of both long serving and new volunteers to assist both on and off the field.

Our intended use of Lidcombe Oval will feature standard home games for RMC, selected NSW State Cup matches and holding of Marquee events such as our annual ‘Return to Lidcombe’. Having a hire on the venue allows Wests Magpies to host associated teams and competitions such as Jersey Flegg, Harvey Norman Women’s and potentially some Junior Representative matches.

We will retain our connection to Campbelltown and the Macarthur via our Magpies HM & SGB Junior Representative Squads and Development teams who remain based in the area. Draw alignments and COVID situation pending, Wests Magpies will continue to play selected games at Campbelltown Sports Stadium (such as Magpies state cup prior to NRL).

We look forward to seeing you at the ground in 2021 to cheer on our Magpies teams at ALL levels and help make our commitment to bring the Magpies back to its spiritual home bring its rewards both on and off the field.

Board of Directors
WSDRLFC

*The clubs plan and intentions in this statement are subject to the 2021 Global/Local status of COVID in and any related impacts to RL competitions and attendance restrictions for public gatherings in 2021.

NSWRL Competition structures and formats may also be subject to change. NSW State Cup has been confirmed as a 10 team competition for 2021.
