NYC: Wests Tigers lose 40-16 to Roosters
Wests Tigers suffered a 40-16 loss to Sydney Roosters at Allianz Stadium today in round 25 of the NYC competition.
The loss leaves Wests Tigers in fifth place on 32 points equal with the Roosters but with a better for and against record with one round remaining. Wests Tigers play Melbourne Storm at Leichhardt Oval next Saturday with the ninth placed Storm playing tomorrow night.
The Roosters opened the scoring in the 5th minute when prop Kane Evans brushed off the tackle by second-rower Kyle Lovett to score next to the posts. Winger Paul Rokolati converted for a 6-0 lead.
Five minutes later, the Roosters went to a 10-0 lead when a short pass from half-back Ryley Jacks pit five-eighth Rhyse Martin over for a try out wide. Rokolati converted for a 12-0 lead.
The Roosters extended their lead to 16-0 when the ball was spread left for Rokolati to dive over in the corner. He converted his own try from the sideline for an 18-0 lead after 19 minutes.
Wests Tigers first real scoring opportunity came in the 20th minute but winger David Nofoaluma - in his first game back from injury- was taken into touch next to the corner post.
Six minutes later, Wests Tigers opened their account when hooker Ben Saunders ran from dummy half to draw in two defenders before slicing through a gap from 10 metres out to score under the posts. Full-back Manaia Rudolph converted from in front to leave Wests Tigers trailing 18-6.
The score remained 18-6 at half-time.
2nd Half
The Roosters extended their lead to 22-6 when prop Dylan Napa crashed over next to the posts. Rokolati converted for a 24-6 scoreline after 52 minutes.
Wests Tigers prop Mosese Fotuaika continued his recent form of scoring tries when he found the line next to the posts for a 24-10 scoreline. Rudolph converted to leave Wests Tigers 24-12 after 58 minutes.
The Roosters went further ahead when second-rower Samisoni Langi ran an angle to score. Rokolati converted for a 30-12 lead.
The home side made it 34-12 when Martin scored under the posts two minutes later. Rokolati converted the try for a 36-12 lead after 70 minutes.
Wests Tigers pulled the deficit back when five-eighth Conner Toia sliced through the defence in a 40 metre run for a 36-16 scoreline. Rudolph failed to convert the try.
Sydney Roosters full-back Henare Wells then scored out wide for a 40-16 lead after 77 minutes. The try was not converted.
