We should banned alcohol as well! 3 million deaths per year is because of alcohol, with it as the casual factor for 200 disease and injury conditions. 5.3% of all deaths according to world health organisation.

It's not done to fit in. Unless we're talking about 16 year olds smoking to be cool. Addiction is masking pain imo.

Don't agree with banning tobacco though.

If anything it should be going the other way and decriminalising drug use.

Plant based drugs sure, decriminalisation of the drugs sourced from nature.
None of that chemical synthetic lab drugs should be allowed.

Tobacco you should be allowed to grow your own with none of the 130+ chemicals added to the cigarette recipe.
Remove the chemicals and it would cause a lot less cancers.

Decriminalise all drug use. Legalise marijuana and institute harsher penalties for synthetic drug distribution.

They have something similar to this over it Portugal and it has helped reduce drug related illness and provides a safe a open place for informed discussion to take place.

That really worked so well in the USA and undoubtedly any government introducing it would be slaughtered at the next election.

I don't think we should ban alcohol or tobacco at all mate. I was trying to point out the hypocrisy of most people because they don't care as long as it doesn't effect them. Instead of government telling you what's good for you, why don't we all decide like adults what's good for us. Btw I don't smoke or drink anymore but you should allowed to make the choice for yourself irrelevant if its good or bad...

I've no idea how much tobacco plant a pack a day smoker would
need to grow, I'd imagine a paddock or two?

I don't know. I know up north Queensland they sell stuff called "chop". It's bush grown tobacco tastes like crap apparently.

Yeah we get chop.chop.here too, have done for more than 20 years... The blackmarket is thriving already... I smoked it for a while before quitting,. Had a work mate recently smoking it all it seemed to do was make him crook as a dog

I'm mixed on this. On one hand, it's great that we'll reduce the amount of smokers in the next generation. On the other hand, drug prohibitions have continually failed throughout history and created more problems than they fixed.

That's fine in theory but the real world has real humans in it. Not banning or regulating potentially dangerous substances is like everyone leaving their doors unlocked in the hope that everyone makes the right choice.

lol, no it isn't. Not sure where you live but I'd suggest you start looking elsewhere if your deadbolt is the only reason you are not getting burgled.

Bold move, but having lost family members to smoking related illness, it's a good one for mine.

I don't think the black market issue will be a big one, there are way more enjoyable illegal substances to enjoy if that's your thing.

Not sure I agree with a total ban - people should have choice as they should for other 'vices' that only harm themselves.
Having said that, as an ex-smoker who started at 6 and stopped at 45 and will probably die from a related illness, we should make it ridiculously expensive with all taxes raised being used to treat people who get ill from it and promoting healthier lifestyle choices.
I wish my old man had used that size 10 boot on me to provide guidance.

Im an ex smoker and while this on the face of it looks good, imo the governments are over reaching their responsibilities. Where does it end people have been smoking for hundreds of years do they ban alcohol next tell you what you're allowed to eat. Red meat isnt good for you according to the Govt so no more steak for you, a beer after work nah sorry you'll all be alcoholics. This is rubbish and not the responsibility of a government we're already in a nanny state as it is and the pandemic is being used to slip in all these laws that in any other time would be unacceptable by the public.
Im not one that's in to conspiracy theories but look at Vic in a constant state of emergency where the government can do to you what they please, we are supposed to live in a free society and it seems as time goes on we are becoming less free by the day.

I think it's about the cost to society (not just financial).

I've worked in the respiratory ward of a big hospital and seen first hand the effect of smoking on a wider community. Some people smoking here and there will not affect the society but it is still very prominent in the society.

My father started smoking in the british army in the 2nd world war(it was literaly forced on him at the time) and he continued smoking until he was in his forties. He died about 20 years ago from heart problems in his 70s bought on by his smoking.
The main problem with smoking is that unlike alcohol there is no such thing as a "safe" level of indulgence

I did smoke full time when I was a teenager into my twenties. Later I just became a 'social smoker' for some years, and finally gave it away totally after a few big weekends.
I remember thinking at the time, it would be far easier and better for everyone concerned if they just banned it! So I think it's a good move. Will be certainly be an interesting one to watch!
