TEAM LIST Official Round 21 v Panthers squad

Team List
Here is a plan to get it done.

Wests Tigers v Penrith Panthers – High Energy to Counter the Grind

This weekend we face the Panthers in a winnable game. We demonstrated in the last outing what it takes to defeat the Panthers – High Energy to counter the grind on both sides of the ball. Use smart load management to maintain energy levels: start Hope in place of Api to soak up the energy of the first 20 minutes and replace AD with Bird to maintain an attacking 13 for the duration of the game. Sione F and Pole to be used to shift momentum as required.

We must avoid getting into the grind with Penrith by playing conservatively – this plays into their hands.

Disrupt Penrith’s flow in attack
  • Push up and in on Cleary and Talagi with a compressed defensive line in the middle third of the field; however, maintain high inside pressure to react quickly to any attempt to shift early.
  • Use a combined rush/block defence in the red zone to negate Penrith’s kicking game and upset their block plays. Middle and edge defenders to pressure Cleary/Talagi and provide inside pressure on the play. Outside defence moves forward and holds position to protect against the short kicking game and tip on plays to the outside backs.
  • Nullify Maclean and Tago by holding the edge line fast. Edges to bite on the inside runners to avoid being exposed by decoy shapes. Compress the defensive line in the middle third but maintain high inside pressure to react to quick shifts and to provide adequte cover/early scramble.
  • Contest the kicks - don't allow Edward/Too tie to engage the line off kicks - arrive with the ball and use our kicking game as attacking opportunities. Target AD through the middle and May on the edge.
Avoid the Grind
  • Panthers typically compress their defence and slow the ruck speed. Challenge them on edges with sweep plays when this occurs.
  • Shift early and often to attack Penrith's smaller outside backs with a combination of crash/quick PTB to provide momentum and footwork at the line to break the defence.
  • Utilise AD/Bird to provide a running threat with their footwork but also shift the point of attack one pass wider of the ruck to generate momentum if we stall.
  • Use Api/Taruva to change momentum when Api comes off the bench. Attack the tiring ruck defence with Taruva capitalising on Api’s deception instead of taking hitups off the ruck. This will also open up space for Luai and Latu as the markers compress to counter.
Triggers & Adjustments
  • If Cleary starts kicking in behind the line to counter the up and in defensive strategy maintain the line speed but switch to a sliding defence.
  • If Penrith are dominating our attack with their line speed execute early kick set - Latu/Luai to kick in behind the line to Taylan/Toa or Api to attempt 40/20 to disrupt Penrith's defensive strategy.

IF
they follow your game plan what do you predict the score to end up ?

Royce Hunt is a beast, however His minutes are simply to low to take up a spot in the team each week.
Is it hunts fault or is it the conditioning coach’s , there is a few big players who play 30 minutes per half , so are we not ramping the condition into him , it’s 20 weeks in he should be able to produce 20 minutes a half , just think our coaching staff have lot to answer for

I know this is not in the same situation but I just wanted to share.
When I started coaching my sons under 11s side , a father brought his son down and ask if he could play , he was a monster 6 feet tall and about 110 to 115 kgs , he could not run 5 meters without falling over excused. We got he to just run 5 meters and drop down and do one push up , after 6 weeks he could do 8 meters and 3 pushups, when the comp
Started he could only play 5 minutes, by the end of the season he could play 10 minutes but only hitting the ball up , no use in defence
We made the grandfinal , I took him aside and ask if he could give me 5 good hit ups as the opposition where sacred of him . On his four hit ups he ran 60 meters pushing kids of , untill he passed it to a team mate who scored under the posts , we won the game , he held the trophy up and said I don’t want to play any more , morale of the story if u put the work in u will get results , maybe are coaches gave given up on hunt

Re Staines. Benjii sat in the presser and said last week’s game was the worst they had played all season. The standard s they set themselves were let down severely. So if he is going to bring about change he simply cannot afford to reward Staines with another shot this week. He is showing the rest that players are accountable. Same reason Hunt is playing in reggies !!

I just realised that I posted this in the wrong thread. I'll have to see if one of the Mods can change it over for me.

The chances of our boys following the game plan I came up with is pretty slim. I'm thinking it will be close and with Cleary's boot v ADs Im thinking 16-14 to the good guys three tries and two conversions v two converted tries and a penalty goal.

Come on lads. The guy (Hunt) is a grown up playing professional sport. When is it going to be his responsibility to be fit enough to do what he’s paid for??
When you have financial consequences for not maintaining a required level of fitness. He gets same money for cruising around in reserve grade.

It's a shame as Charlie had been good for most of the year. I like what Benji is doing.

Charlie is generally very safe and mistake free, the Titans game was very out of character.
If you compare him as a winger to Turuva, he is a little bit quicker and slightly better under the high ball, but his yardage carries while decent, are not quite as strong and his overall defence and defensive reads are worse than Turuva’s.
Not much between them, but I would select Turuva ahead of him purely on his high energy and upbeat attitude.
