Offord signs with Bradford!!

Manly are set to put faith in their youth rather than recruit a new halfback to fill the gaping hole left by outgoing NRL premiership-winning halfback Matt Orford.

The club announced on Monday that Orford, who led them to the 2008 premiership and won the Dally M medal the same year, would leave the club to join Super League side Bradford Bulls, where he will reportedly take up a deal worth $1.5 million over three seasons.

Orford, 31, had been mulling over a two-year contract extension with the Sea Eagles but opted to take the opportunity to fill a long-held ambition to play in England, insisting there was "nothing sinister" in his decision to leave.

Orford's departure leaves the Sea Eagles' halves ranks looking decidedly thin for 2010 but the club insists their talented youngsters, Kiwi international Kieran Foran, 19, and Queensland Cup player of the year Trent Hodkinson, 21, are ready to step up.

Sea Eagles chairman Scott Penn did not totally discount any new signings, including former Sea Eagles halfback Michael Monaghan who is playing with Warrington, but indicated the club would be looking to blood a new first grade halfback just as Parramatta had with Daniel Mortimer and the Sydney Roosters with Mitchell Pearce.

"We've got Kieran who certainly started to step up at the end of last year and we've got Trent Hodkinson who is absolutely an up and comer, so we've got the talent," Penn said.

"Arguably this probably forces our hand a little but in terms of giving them an opportunity a little earlier than expected.

"But we've certainly found out over the last couple of years with Daniel Mortimer and Mitchell Pearce there are some talented kids coming through and they've stepped up.

"We're expecting our guys to do the same."

Penn denied Orford's departure would free up significant salary cap room for a new signings, claiming the club would need the space to retain the bulk of their first team in the coming seasons.

"We've got some significant challenges coming up from a salary cap perspective next year," Penn said.

"Any potential room in the cap, we're probably going to need it to be honest.

"Having said that, you never say never, but I think probably at this stage we'll back our existing guys.

"We weren't necessarily expecting to be in this position, we really had plans probably for Ox to be there in 2010, but as one door closes another one opens."

Penn insisted the club and Orford were parting on good terms, saying the former Northern Eagle and Melbourne Storm No.7 would always be "part of the family" at Brookvale, while coach Des Hasler praised his "consistency, leadership and courage."

Orford, who will link up with former Sea Eagles teammates Steve Menzies, Glenn Hall and Heath L'Estrange at Bradford, said in a statement he loved his time at the club since joining from the Storm in 2006.

"It is a wonderful club with fantastic fans. I will miss living and playing in the area but a football career is short and I want to satisfy a long held goal to play in England for a couple of seasons," he said.

"I wish Manly all the success in the world. They have some good young halfback prospects that deserve an opportunity in the NRL."

They will definitely miss Orford's direction around the ruck and barking orders at the Manly forwards. Good luck ti him in the UK though, he's had a good career in the NRL.

Personal opinion orford is a hack & getting rid of him is the best thing manly could have done.
$500k a year for orford shows just how much of a joke superleague is.

I don't rate Orford but they should be careful if they have Foran as their main man now. He seems more a 5/8th than a halfback.

did manly sign that halfback from the eels…cant think of his name now!? It does free up a bit of money for them, id expect them to make a play for thurston now. Ive also heard the watmough rumour about him leaving too. I guess they'll throw the captaincy his way to try and keep him.

Trent Hodkinson…...

All can't be that great over on the penisular.........  my heart bleeds..... :unamused:

Good organiser but had the worst long kicking game in the NRL.

I hope Manly suffer without a recognised #7 but it would not suprise me if they did a deal with Mitchell Pearce and bring him across from the rorters.

I agree 100% he's not worth $500k & i thought manly were paying him to much at $400k

Im suprised we have'nt heard from some on here of how bad our recruiting is that we are'nt throwing barels of cash at Orford

Although I agree that orford may be overpriced Manly have now been left in trouble in my opinion. Keiran foran has alot of potential no doubt but for him to be their most experienced half is crazy. I can't see 2010 being a very succesful year for manly.

**Manly hit as sponsor follows captain out the door**
Brent Read From: The Australian November 20, 2009
ONLY days after losing its captain to England, Manly is battling to replace one of its major sponsors and staring at a $500,000 hole in its budget.
>
Co-owner Scott Penn confirmed sleeve sponsor Mack Trucks had withdrawn its $300,000-a-year support, just another slap in the face for a side which is reeling from the shock decision by Matt Orford to leave for English Super League side Bradford.
>
It doesn't end there, however. The financial hit comes as the Sea Eagles brace for a reduction in their grant from Manly Leagues Club, which will contribute only $200,000 to the club next year – down from $500,000.
>
Penn and co-owner Max Delmege will also be forced to make another cash injection into Manly after a poor year hurt the club's bottom line. It is believed the Penn and Delmege families will be forced to stump up about $500,000 between them to meet the budgetary shortfall.

It has the potential to test the frosty relationship between the families, which led to the resignation of chief executive Grant Mayer earlier this year. Mayer is yet to be replaced, although former Manly and New Zealand coach Graham Lowe is expected to be appointed in the near future.
>
Asked about the decision by Mack Trucks to withdraw its backing, Penn said: "They have pulled out of sport.
>
"They flagged it early on. It's not a surprise to be honest. It's something we have been working on for a while. We have a lot of lines in the market, and we have quite a lot of bites.
>
"We're confident we will have something in the next month or so. It's fair to say that we budgeted to have a sponsor.
>
"So it's fair to say it's important."
>
Penn confirmed he and the Delmege family would need to use their own money to keep the club afloat. The respective families, who each own about 40 per cent of the club, clashed late last year over money.
>
"Last time we spoke about it everyone was committed," Penn said.
>
Meanwhile, French club Catalans could throw a lifeline to Chris Walker, whose contract with Bradford has been jeopardised by the English club's decision to sign Orford.
>
Walker had agreed to a two-year deal with Bradford, but was subsequently informed he was surplus to requirements.
>
He has vowed to take legal action to protect his interests, but Catalans could yet come to the rescue.
>
"It depends on what happens to Greg Bird," Catalans coach Kevin Walters said.
>
"We might have a look Chris if Greg comes back (to the NRL). He's a good player and you always want good players."

RAOTFLMAO..Manly sponsorship troubles.......Once Penn and Delmege pull out there stuffed..........Perth Beagles sounds like a goer 2012......
