Old glories help Dragons' Benji Marshall find NRL feet again

A player like Benji will look good if he can find some space and time to work. I don't think he's got the speed or the step to create that space for himself any more, and the Dragons pack isn't dominant enough to create it for him. Against a Sharks reserve grade side we saw what he's trying to do, if only he could pull it off against a first grade defence.

Against the Panthers it'll be the same story. Sideways skipping looking for holes that just aren't there, half heartadly running into the line and failing to commit defenders before offloading too early. There'll be some speculative cutout balls that lack the numbers in the outside backs to be effective, and a few beers will be spilled in the stands as passes go into touch.

My predictions: Moylan is going to catch every grubber and chip and make it look easy, and Mansour will come up with the ball from a Benji hospital pass and run 70m to score.

Lol
Bitter n twisted
I only have to say boo about poster boy and the fan boy's on here defending him to the hilt

Hilarious alright

I'm not a fan boy. I just don't see the point in booting a bloke who is obviously down. Especially a guy that, at one point, gave us plenty to smile about.

Probably says a bit about your lives…or lack of.

I could be wrong , but I don't think it was aimed at you TB

All the benji fan boys out there don't understand why we give it to him ….
He was cuddled to the max by shenius . He wasn't made accountable for his poor playing actions . Sure he had his golden moments here and there ,
But in the end he bought the club to its knees .. Playing like a busted girl guide , & in the end he was offers good coin to stay but spat the dummy .
I myself are enjoying his passes to row H . His inside hospital passes & poor kicking game now he's not with us ...
Lol @ saints I say .

The media must absolutely love Benji. They can just rehash the same stories, year after year after year. How many times do we head the same thing:

1\. Benji had a bad game, but he's figured out where his went wrong
2\. Benji had a good game, thanks to…
3\. Benji is going to cut out the high risk plays
4\. Benji is going to run the ball more
...

Now he's come out and said Sheens should be coach next yr. He's not bad, only been there a month and is already trying to tell the club what they should be doing. Glad we don't have to deal with that ego anymore.

Benji….what a troublemaker....

Mate you overexagerate more than knuckles
Putting the boot in???
If this is putting the boot in….

Now he wants them to sign Sheens

**Not hard to see why he causes division**

.......I dont see what the point of these discussion boards are.

Hes been there 3 or 4 weeks and now suggesting coaches - hence my point. (bolded)
Fair dinkum there are some nancy boys on here who must be frightened of their own shadow, you cant say a thing without panties getting all twisted.

Everybody's getting there knickers in a knot about nothing.
Most on here wouldn't know how journos work but if they don't write this sort of stuff (and elaborate) to 'get people talking' they'd soon be looking for a new job.
Marshall would have been asked what he thought caused the improvement and said he looked at a couple of old tapes to see if their was something missing from when he was playing better.
He then would have said he was happy things improved but he knew the opposition was below standard and he had a long way to go.
The rest is padding to fill out a story.
I know he's done to death in the media but a guy saying he played a little better against weak opposition and has a long way to go doesn't sound egotistical to me (not this time, anyway)

THERE is one man who knows how to get the most out of Benji Marshall.

His name is Tim Sheens.

And a reunion could be on the cards with Marshall on Wednesday recommending his former Wests Tigers coach for the top job at St George Illawarra should current caretaker Paul McGregor be overlooked.

Sheens, who spent nine years as Marshall’s mentor, is being considered for the role along with Neil Henry, Tony Smith, Trent Barrett, and Wayne Bennett.

In a recommendation that will carry weight with those officials desperate to avoid being left red faced by Marshall’s $1.1 million, 30-month deal, the Kiwi playmaker said Sheens would be able to help resurrect the beleaguered club.

“I think Tim would be great for the club,’’ Marshall said.

“Especially with the younger guys. He has the knack of developing the young guys and teaching those fundamentals you need. He would bring that attacking style too which would be great for the club.’’

Marshall also said current caretaker coach McGregor “had what it took’’ to continue next year.

Heading into the fourth match of his NRL return after a failed stint in rugby union, the 2005 premiership winner revealed he turned to YouTube after having doubts about his comeback.

He also admitted his good performance against the Sharks meant little given Cronulla’s injury woes.

Would Tim Sheens be a good fit for the Dragons?

“It gave me some confidence,’’ Marshall said.

“I needed a good game and we needed a win. But I am under no illusions. They had their best 10 players out. I have a long way to go and I am working hard every week. Maybe I was trying too hard to be great straight away.”

Marshall turned back the clock and studied old footage online in a bid to spark his attack.

“I wanted to see what used to work for me,’’ Marshall said.

“So I went to YouTube because I really didn’t know how else to find them. There were a couple of things put up by Tigers fans and I had a look. I had a few doubts the first couple of weeks and I thought it would help to look what I was good at.

“And it was simple. I was good at running to the line and committing defenders. I did that on the weekend. I ran to the line and committed defenders and opened up space for others.’’

Marshall biggest rugby league weapon was his speed.

His ability to dart through the line created mass defensive confusion. Benji

Marshall admitted he has slowed down over the years, forcing him to become a ball player.

“I struggled with a toe injury and it held me back with the speed stuff,’’ Marshall said.

“But this year I have gotten a bit quicker but I think you just loss a bit with age. That was my biggest weapon and I have had to change my game to accommodate the things I am lacking. But I still have the pace to get through holes and get away. I am just not as quick as I used to be.’’

Marshall denied being overweight at 91kg and will be looking to play safe as he finds his form.

“I am just trying to stop my errors,’’

“I am limiting those (high risk) plays.’’

No chance of settling in and concentrating on footy is there. Stuff that, not when theres an ego to throw around and an opportunity to reunite the boys club where we look after our mates and throw accountability out the window. He'll try and get the club to bring Moltzen over next.

I'm glad this is no longer happening at west-tigers.
he moved on and wests-tiger perform better.
co incidence or not, everyone can decide for themselves.
