I wasnt at that game but if it is the one I am thinking of Piggins scored one of the all-time great tries for Souths to give them the lead with a couple of minutes to go before Foster scored the winning try for Wests. They played that Piggins try over and over and justly so, it was a beauty.

That's the one.
Rex Mossop always said it was the greatest game he ever broadcast.

I was at Lidcombe Oval for those games too…..

We always sat on the hill at the half way line.

They were the days....and you could bring your esky in too....

Ah the Lidcombe Oval hill ( and i'd imagine Leichhardt as well ) myself and a few mates would wander down from Auburn in time for the 3rds/u23's grab a few pies and beers (which didn't cost us our weekly wages) - invariably watch the magpie forwards led by Dallas smash the opposition and then head up to the Railway for a few cold ones afterwards - truly a day out.

Good old Dallas. My uncle has a story of being out one night with a group of people (i'd say around Lidcombe somewhere) that included Dallas and they went into a pizza place and as soon as they got in there Dallas went crazy jumping the counter and scoffing into all the ingredients to make the pizzas. Would have been a fun guy to be around by the sounds of it

I played a lot of my junior football & school footbal @ Leichardt Oval & the ground was redeveloped in about 1970- 1972, Cant be spot on but i am very close with those years.

Thanks, I tend to forget there's all that good stuff lurking on youtube

Yes one of my earliest memories is at LO when Keith Barnes retired in 68 and the ground ran the other way. Then in the early 70s Balmain played their home ground games at the Sportsground now the SFS while LO was done up. I think the Amco cup started in 74\. I won a motorbike in the Amco pass the ball comp in 75\. I think the ground record at LO was an Amco Cup GF with close to 25000 there.

What a fantastic day that was - I was 12 years old but will never forget it.
Such a shame the great man wasn't there the following year to collect a premiership.
Forget current kickers - if you weren't around in those days to see what Keith Barnes and Eric Simms ( and after Barnes Len Killeen ) could do with a heavy , wet , out of shape leather ball you haven't seen anything!

excellent how people from both sides of our joint venture can still remember the old days lidcombe or LO sunday was the day and footy was all you had on your mind , and if you were at home the old trany radio would be place out back with the old fellows having a KB back then and us young one smashing each other in backyard footy
nice
