One Foot in Grave Forum

Am I the only one, who misses the way life was, decades ago.
No political correctness BS.
You made the most of what you had.
If you couldn't afford to buy it, you saved up until you could, and really appreciated that special item when you got it.
The music was enjoyable.

Speaking of musicianship, this might rate for guitar work - I've always loved this (even like the paisley jacket)

Mick Jagger is ageing better than Johnny Cash who unfortunately only lived to 71 years old.

The open notes of this tune sound similar to opening of Stairway to Heaven

Moving
They both died less than a year after this video, and the house burned down a few years later

Poor old Johnny Cash looked 90\. Aged terribly. Weird that the song he's probably best remembered for these days is a song he didn't write.

Are you reluctant to change as you get older?

We're all fairly savvy with the net, so thats something, though I know people that arent and dont use computers or smartphones.

Its sometimes seems hard to keep up with the constant change going on around us

What things dont you like that are changing?

I dont like buying things online, though tickets and payments are different…I need to feel a shirt, try on shoes and pants...clothes online isnt my go

I have an E-tag, an Opal card, a keycard, get my bills D-debited...though I still like paper statements..especially insurance policies...car rego always creeps up on me now Ive no sticker to remind me, the text meassage from the RTA or is it RMS , PMS, RTS, RPA...one of those...reminds me

I wonder if Malcolm or Bill will text me? Someone else recently did.

I havent hired a DVD from a machine, havent used VR goggles, Ive seen 3D TV but that gave me a headache...I avoid drive thrus, I like to take my time and the lanes seem very narrow. I still watch the news on TV but havent bought a paper in a decade or more but a mate at work younger than me does, someone still cuts my hair for $10...though they speak a different language but thats OK with me.

OK with change?

It's inevitable, so no point fighting it too much, but we are not over the hill yet, just struggling to stay at the crest.

Pretty well sums me up as well, though I have gotten a DVD from a machine a few times, pay a bit more for a snip and not overly tech savvy.

I hate 4WDs, their high headlights appear on high beam though not. If behind or oncoming are irritating. Much worse so now with my Bells. Before the right headlight had to drop towards the middle of the road but the 4Wds seem to raise on both left and right sides?? I don't think they comply with the old standards.

This is a famous song translated into about a dozen languages - possibly influenced by Cat Stevens. A famous movie was also based on this song called Anak (child).

I don't mind some change.

Won't buy clothes online but, will buy parts or small items online. Although I tend to visit a store if I need something big then surf the web for the best price.

Love PayPass, I don't have much cash in my pocket these days and when I do it tends to sit there for ever. I went into the bank branch the other day and they no longer look like a bank.

Still love the sound of vinyl records putting the needle down, the crack and pop but, I love my iPod, my whole music library is in there.

Hair cut costs me $15, from a bearded barber but that's because I get a buzz cut now days to match the rest of my head. Otherwise it's $20 or more.

ETags are great beats stopping to pay the toll but, on some trips the tag goes off like a fire cracker with the amount of tolls in Sydney nowadays.

I should add the number of warning sounds from my car gets to much us well - old lane markings on the road - lane departure beep, going around a bend and a parked car on the side of the road - forward collision beep, …...parking sensor beep, ..........tyre pressure beep, .....seat belt, making a phone call is so hard - she doesn't listen I say call Garry - she calls Darren. My heart couldnt take the shock from all the warnings , so I had my son switch most of the warnings off - I had the car serviced the other day and they are back on! I preffer to drive my old ute around, power windows is the only tech that she has.

Finger buns, what finger buns don't get me started on finger buns.

I don't go to the local anymore cause there isn't one - there is this thing that is a cross between a pub, club and kindergarten where there are crazy unattended kids screaming and yelling with no parent around. I used to go to the pub to get away from the kids, catch up with mates and watch footy - now days I drink at home with mates.

Lots of goods things are happening don't get me wrong but sometimes I get nostalgic and wish I could go back to the days of my youth in the 70's when people by comparison were optimistic about the future and looked each other in the eye when they had a conversation.

I do miss catching the hydrofoil, from Circular key to Manly. :stuck_out_tongue:
The ferries were great fun, to be on especially with the big swells, they could not compare with the thrill of the hydrofoil.

Also miss going to Castlereagh car drag races, in the 80's.
The smell of the fuel, and sight of the flames coming out of the exhaust, on the top fuel dragsters. :righton:

Yeah, OK with change for the most part.
I've bought stuff through the internet for quite some time, mainly due to living remote. Often it wasn't worth the three hour trip to Darwin just to see if I could find the thing I wanted. Also learned that I could often talk sales people down on a price if I'd found it cheaper on the net.
Some of the new 'scroll through menu' technology baffles me especially if the instructions are in 'intuitive' pictograms. My kids work them out no worries.
The changes that are the greatest humbug are health related. Everything aches. Voltarin is my friend.

change for change sake is also an issue.
what i dont get is the remodelling of parra stadium.i was just getting used to the trauma of cumberland oval being demolished and now parra stadium is being pancaked.
i dont live in the area anymore but grew up with parra pool to the south and the leagues club to the north.why theyre replacing old parra stadium with a stadium which only has a capacity of 30000 seems unneccessary to me.
maybe there are better informed forumers who will correct my misinformation.
i also loved the war memorial pool which had the highest diving boards ever- now there will be no public swimming facility apart from lake parramatta.
in these instances, i believe change isnt for the better nor is neccessary.
if it aint broke, dont fix it.

A guy walked into the local welfare office to pick up his check.
\
\
\
He marched straight up to the counter and said, "Hi. You know…, I just

HATE drawing welfare. I'd really rather have a job."
\
\
\
The social worker behind the counter said, "Your timing is excellent. We

just got a job opening from a very wealthy old man who wants a Chauffeur

and bodyguard for his beautiful daughter. You'll have to drive around in

his 2017 Mercedes-Benz CL, and he will supply all of your clothes.
\
\
\
"Because of the long hours, meals will be provided. You'll also be expected

to escort the daughter on her overseas holiday trips.
\
\
\
This is rather awkward to say but you will also have as part of your job assignment to

satisfy her sexual urges as the daughter is in her mid-20's and has a rather strong sex drive."
\
\
\
The guy, just plain wide-eyed, said, "You're bullshi**tin' me!"
\
\
\
The social worker said, "Yeah, well ... You started it."

do you mean the swimming pools in Granville. They were unusual in that one was heated but not indoor so you had to choose your day.

I was against the original stadium in the late seventies as they were alienating public park land. When Parra won the premiership or one of the finals there they burnt down the old wooden stools that belonged to Council. It may have been the Wran govt. Parra eventually went to Liberal Party anyway so did not do Labor any good giving up their principles.

i dont understand why they are replacing / replaced the present stadium with a stadium that has a capacity of only 30 000 people.didnt the present stadium hold that many as it was.?
why not have a stadium which has a capacity of 100 000.?
to me its change for change sake and illogical.
besides which they ripped up the war memorial pool next door.i loved the diving board- not that i jumped off it- i just liked watching daerdevils jump.
as you get older, you have to accept change, but not when you think its unneccessary.

Operating costs Vs the ability to fill it.

Regardless if a facility is being used or not, it still incurs a cost. The bigger the facility the bigger the cost. The only chance the facility gets to recoup that cost is when you fill it.

That being said, the current design really goes against world trends. This new stadium looks to improve the fan experience. The reality is facilities should be built in a way that attracts people for the majority of time the facility is not being used for its primary purpose.

eyewonder is right - there has been a swimming pool adjacent to Cumberland oval and pirtek stadium since 1959 - it was closed this year as part of the new stadium development taking place.
