One on One with Eddy Pettybourne
Eddy Pettybourne is the talk of the team with his peroxide blonde hair but the skilful back-rower is very serious when it comes to cementing a position in the Wests Tigers forward pack.
The former Rabbitoh spoke to club media manager Wayne Cousins about pre-season training and his immediate goals for next season.
WAYNE: The first question every Wests Tigers Member wants to know, what is the reason behind the hair?
EDDIE: I usually get my ‘mrs’ to dye my hair in the off-season break but since I’ve come to the Wests Tigers, a few of the boys are telling me to keep it. It may stay for a little longer.
WAYNE: It certainly has attracted everyone’s attention. There must be a few nick-names floating around?
EDDIE: A few of the boys have been calling me Sisqo after the American R&B artist famous for the ‘The Thong Song’. I’ve also copped Wesley Snipes too from the film ‘Demolition Man’. It’s all good fun.
WAYNE: Pre-season training has been very tough so far including an intensive four day camp in Wyong. How have you found it?
EDDIE: It’s been pretty tough, especially the session where we did boxing, wrestling and kayaking for three hours non-stop on the first day in Wyong. It really does test you. I'm training hard and I want to do the little things right to look after my body. I need to keep fighting for a back-row position as there is a fair bit of depth here. I really want to cement a spot in the Wests Tigers NRL team.
WAYNE: You seem to have already formed a bond with fellow new recruit in Bodene Thompson?
EDDIE He is an awesome bloke. Bodene, Masada Iosefa and myself kind of grew up together and it has been great to train with them after playing against each other. Bodene is a good mate but he is just one of the many challengers I face. It is not easy coming into a new club where everyone is chasing the same spots.
WAYNE Coach Mick Potter is already a good influence on the players?
EDDIE: Mick is pretty strict which is good. There is a lot of talented players here and everyone wants to impress him. I’m sure he can help take my game to another level.
WAYNE: Last question. Is it safe to say you won’t be taking up kayaking as a future sport after your efforts down the Wyong River?
EDDIE: How bad was I (laughing). I lost count how many times I tipped the kayak over. Fortunately, Matty Groat was nearby to keep rescuing me. I don’t think I will ever make the Olympic rowing team.
