So this project Apollo team only talked about reducing refs for less than an hour, didn’t talk to coaches, didn’t talk to the refs, didn’t ask anyone else about it. Seems crazy to make such a massive decision like this without properly talking it through.

Refs will be protesting it so hopefully it doesn’t happen. PVL can’t just change the game however he feels like without consulting anyone. One ref = Melbourne and roosters grand final

It's just another example of the NRL under V'Landys and his "ready-fire-aim" style of leadership. Announcements made before proper consultation and negotiation, more or less to bully others into a position that suits the NRL.

Really?? And we're meant to applaud and praise that type of leadership? Nah. I'm calling it for what it is; blinkered, stubborn, selfish, win-at-all-costs, autocratic, alienating and divisive leadership by V'Landys.

No wonder Greenberg seemed genuinely relieved and happy to be away from this nut case of a man.

That style has its positives and negatives. It’s been fantastic for getting the footy back and he’s done a good job with that so far. With stuff like this, rule changes etc it’s pretty crazy. Does what he wants without consulting others.

Only way one ref works is if they actually penalise teams for wrestling constantly, but last time they did that there was 100 penalties a game, the players never learned and the fans complained.

Actually it was mainly Slothfield through news ltd who complained and the cynic in me believes that he complained because Gallen and the sharks sucked under the policing

The media were the main complainers but the fans followed as they always do. That’s why they changed it back - before they did teams like roosters and storm struggled

That where this sort of leadership will thrive. He won't listen to white noise by the media. And I don't think it as necessarily the majority of fans.

We will be so desperate to watch footy that 40 penalty games with 9 in the bin will sort them out

Simple ......3 of any type of penalty and someone goes to the bin after every penalty of the same reason

The six again rule they are talking about takes out the captains challenge ....

Its about taking control back.
Good teams with good d didn't give a crap.
But reduce their numbers... Good idea.
Ref's and the NRL let it get out of hand trying to polish a TV product... They can get control back... Harsh and consistent and bugger the whingers

Best part is that it also compresses the defensive line to allow more space on the edges, which a side competent at sliding can overcome.

Probably depends on the defence .....if you can lessen the numbers in the tackles (which limiting interchange should do ) the defensive line shouldn't need to compress

I guess the biggest concern is teams then start running 5 tackles from dummy half and then bomb on the last tackle ...that will get as dull as dogpoo

My thoughts as well.

Plenty of refs in junior football who are reasonable, promote them. Most of the ones currently graded can get a real job as they are not performing consistently or well anyway

They won’t strike. They have every right to be upset when all of a sudden they’re being told there’ll be half as many jobs for them without being consulted about it at all.

Millions now have No jobs let alone only half as many and corona doesn't consult or ask politely beforehand either.
Ref's just as bad as entitled players pulling race and mental health cards for excuses if this strike threat is legit

The NRL didn’t even tell the refs about it. They saw it in the news. That’s not fair on them at all.

I doubt they strike, Fox are saying they won’t. Channel 9 are crisis merchants

REF WATCH. Most types at this arvo’s NRL phone hook-up want two-ref system to STAY. But point also made clear game needs to cut costs. Looks like one whistleblower inevitable ...

One ref and six again call for ruck infringements. I like it. Especially if It does what it is designed todo and eradicates the wrestle.

I sort of agree..but you can't change a rule that radical mid season...

Yeah but this season is not normal anyway so why not take the opportunity. The only one really bitching is Politis and that’s only because the Roosters lost the first two games and old Nick wants a re-start so everyone starts again at zero.

V’landys stated on Ch9 news the the two ref system hasn’t worked, and he is right.

Bugger them. If they were competent at their job the 2 ref system would probably still be in place. They are useless so back to 1 we go.

I don’t care if V’landys is autocratic. For too long players and coaches And clubs and media have run the game. It’s time the NRL became a dictatorship and told everyone that the NRL runs the game. Keep it up Pete! Stay strong

I wouldn't say the two ref system didn't work. I think the problem with the refs is the inconsistency in their objectiveness from week to week, ref to ref. They tried to come down harder on the wrestle last year (or maybe it's the year before now) were doing a good job, but caved into pressure and let the wrestle continue. That was a mistake.

But as far as the two referees on field at once go, they have trained as that for the last year, year and a half? It's not realistic to think they can adjust in three weeks to a one referee system without there being massive teething issues. I'd prefer it to stay with the two refs but have more clearly defined roles.

How is one referee physically able to stand back in the defensive line to mark where the defence should be, look to their left to see that they are onside, look to their right also, and look closely at the ruck to ensure no infringement happens there. It's not possible, it's why they need help, be it touchies or a second ref, or both.

As @Fade.To.Black just said, I agree they have done a poor job with consistency, so reverting back to one won't change the level of referring - which is subpar anyway.

Good post. V’landys decision is about cost cutting BUT he has said its about the wrestle in the ruck. Whatever happens, he has started the agenda for cleaning up the ruck.

The touchies need to step up and officiate the defending team remaining onside. Penalise the hell out of them if they creep up, even with the 2 ref system there was some shocking missed calls on blokes 4-5 metres offside: that should never be missed whether it is 2 refs or 1 ref with his 2 touchies pulling their finger out.
