Online Petition to NRL for 2012 - Ref inconsistency

What little chance the Warriors had were blown out of the water by two incompetent refs in the first half. I counted at least 7 calls go against them in the first half that were at least 50/50 calls. Its a shame they get this mind set that you cant blow the whistle in Grand Finals. They played into Manly's hands as they will push every boundary to the limit and beyond

tried watching a NFL game lately…3 hrs and counting...boring waiting for accurate precise decisions 5mins after the play ??

Our NRL ref's do have system to fix there faults and improve the game..

The NRL coach is really up against it, wouldn't have their job for quids (even though they get stacks more) just when they think they have their team ready for a game and think they have done all they can to bring about a win, the word referee pops into their head, they take a quick reality check and realise the result is in the hands of the gods or in this game the refs!!

Sorry, I don't have time to respond to some earlier posts though I would like to, but yes, take some of those calls and the game completely changes. Anthony Watmough's side line facing play the ball is disgraceful, I have seen better play the balls get penalised for that all year. Then that led to a penalty going to Manly on next play the ball for a head high shot.

Then, which is clearly the worst decision of the game, Cherry-Evans obstruction which led to the try next phase. I tell you know if they scored on that phase the video ref would have given NO TRY. For 2 refs and 2 linesmen to miss that when millions can see it on TV is just terrible.

All the more reason to sign that petition and/ or join the facebook site!! If that type of system was in place the refs would at least likely had some type of points recorded against them for missing such things.

Thats the stupid thing about it all if the play doesn't stop and Manly score the DCE obstruction try would of been pulled up
I know I will get flogged for saying this but I wish we used the old English super league rule in where they could check anywhere in the whole set of six leading up to the try to check for infridgements

Game needs a penalty that is more relevant to the game, decades ago it was more of a territory based game with multiple areas to compete for the ball (strips, scrums, play the ball) - but now it is all about possessions and completions. Minor or subjective ruck infringements and more minor offsides should just be an extra tackle - repeat infringements and professional fouls/dangerous play should be penalty as is.

This would allow refs to police the ruck in a manner which would hopefully result in less subjective momentum swinging penalties and a better general flow of the game.

I think they need a rule where if the ruck is not cleared, the ref should be allowed to call the markers offside, giving the attacking side an easy 10m. There are lots of players who know how to manipulate the ruck (Brett White is a master of it), to slow it right down 'accidentally' so there's no penalty. This would help put a stop to that, as refs would feel less reluctant to call it compared to a penalty.

@happy tiger - You're absolutely right about that Manly try and the obstruction was just pathetic really .. that's saying it's ok to have runners close to the ball carrier who can block tacklers by being there. The Poms must use that rule for a reason, does it slow the game up much but? Or do they have video refs watching for such mistakes full time?

@Demonborger - Couldn't agree more and it's an excellent point (and the second time I've heard something similar but not sure if it was on this forum). In todays ball game a penalty being worth either a kick for goal or a 10 metre march plus tackle recount would be more than enough advantage. Good points.

@Marshall_magic - That's a damn good idea also, would definitely keep the flow of the game going much more fluently. There are teams out there that expose this really well and get away with it every week - that extra time it gives to prepare to defend each attack makes such a difference.

I agree there is a level of inconsistency within games, but i dont know that there is any way to change that. I think that the 2 referee system has doubled the amount of penalties and i'd love to see it go back to one.
The benefit of the doubt rule for me is one of the biggest blights on the game, if there's any doubt why should it be a try? I prefer the rugby system as seen in the world cup where the referees discretion determines where the benefit of the doubt lies (attack/defence) by saying "I believe this is a try/not a try unless you can show me otherwise".
If a team or individual performs poorly they face the media and explain their actions. Referees should also have to face the media instead of hiding behind Harrigan.

They use BOTD the wrong way, it was originally brought in for plays where the key moment is in between frames (eg a try in the corner with the players foot going out), and you can't tell if they get it down before they go out, or other areas too close to call (knock on/knock backs that are 50/50). However the video refs have used it to cover themselves more recently for things like obstructions, where they have all the information they need in front of them, but they don't want to make the decision.
