I disagree. In my view downvoting is anonymous and cowardly. If you disagree with a post you should say so and say why. The object of a forum is to promote discussion and ideas. Downvoting does not contribute to the objectives of a forum.

I agree with the suggestion to de-anonymise the downvoting. If you are gonna neg, stand behind it.

I like the ability to downvote, personally, I like being able to disagree with a post without having to write a justification for it. That's also meaningful coming from me, because obviously once I post something I tend to do so with gusto.

I know some people abuse down-voting but that's why the limit-per-user is applied, so we don't have voting flame wars.

I had a case recently where someone was not downvoting me, but they went around up-voting anyone who disagreed with me. That's just a passive-agressive variation on downvoting, but not anonymous, so you might as well remove anonymising from regular downvotes and get on with it.

It is pretty clear that the downvotes are really frustrating people on here. They are mostly unwarranted and may only serve to dishearten and discourage posting.

Personally, I'd much rather jump into a dialogue, but I cannot agree with this post.

Downvoting is a way of showing that somebody doesn't support a particular idea or comment.

If somebody receives that as a personal affront, then perhaps they should look at how closely their self-esteem is intertwined with their ideas.

Disagreeing with somebody, especially when people may not have the time or wherewithal to post a well-thought out rebuttal is not bullying.

It is simply disagreeing.

And that should be encouraged.

Personally not sure what the big deal is with a downvote. If an upvote is designed to be an agreeance mechanism for a post, isn't a downvote purely designed to express you don't agree with ones post? It's not a personal attack of ones integrity, just a simplified method of saying you share a different view without having to type a response explaining why you disagree.

Maybe I'm over simplifying things too much however I just fail to see where the malice is in a downvote. Could always remove the option to downvote if that many take offense to it.
