We don't have issues with our attack , bar needing a power runner in the opposition's red zone which may be fixed with Idris and possibly Sue playing wider

Our defence needs to be the thing that wins us games in 2017

As happy just said our attack will win us plenty of games if we get 50% of the ball, but our defence needs to improve out of sight if we are going to finish 8th or better and with basically the same roster it hard to see where the improvement is going to come from. Every team will be lining their monsters up at our little blokes and we have a few of them. Anyway could be wrong, **but our defence to me is still a massive worry**

Its what it all boils down to….nothing will improve if the defence doesnt

Ok so a simple observation about one players running style turns into a "thats not our problem, defence is" discussion? I guess the only talk from now on Watto is about defence, backrowers and centres….no need to improve on anything else.

How you turned such a small observation by Watto into something completely irrelevant to the post is beyond me Happy. Lawrence got smashed twice in the video, i think it cant hurt to have a look why and improve it. Everyone knows we need to fix our defence, doesnt mean any discussion about improving parts of our attack should be dismissed.

I don't know what the hell that rant was all about KS

I pointed out having Idris and possibly Sue should create more opportunities in the red zone for everyone but our defence will still be key and you have a bloody meltdown

Excuse me for pointing out the plain facts

Lets just try and overcomplicate everything (like it sounds has happened with our defence when a 200 + game veteran from a successful club points it out ) and that will just make things fine and dandy

Every convo comes back to your 3 points, centres, backrow and defence. I find it strange that a comment about Lawrence cutting back in can return back to your issues with defence. I like u Happy, u know that mate, but i seem to remember this horribly negative Happy Tiger last off season who just wont let anything positive in at all. Almost like u enjoy looking at the glass half empty. At least try and keep your talk about these issues to the actual posts that relate to it. Watto's point had nothing to do with your reply.

If Rowdy is in our Top 17 I want him to do the simple things very well

Trying to get him running out lines at this stage of his career really isn't plausible he lacks the speed over 5-10 metres to be able to get on the outside of any centre and be able to position a support

The only line Rowdy might be successful with is maybe running a similar line to Ellis and hitting at an angle and use some footwork , but he needs to be hitting the line at speed and Tedesco needs to be sitting off his hip

And I'm not overly happy we haven't really taken steps to fix to recruit back rowers

You questioned me last year (you may remember) about how I thought a switch to big ,rangy mobile second rowers will be important in the future with the reduction in interchange

Tell me that was wrong ….. all the Top sides have back rowers coming out of their foofer valves and on their benches

We haven't even recruited any young blokes into the NYC system who fit that mould

I know I make this point incessantly but we have arguably our worst three defenders on our left and right defending next to each other (depending on the exact Idris plan )

We need to stop talking it up and instead trying to find ways to work around this or 2017 will look very similar to 2016

I'm not going to powderpuff my thoughts on this , sorry

I posted this in the wrong thread… reposting here:

That video got me pumped! A few points:
Kev is an attacking weapon. If he can sort out his defensive reads and work on his bomb defusal, he could be a quality outside back.
I have a feeling Ava is in for a big year.
It would be nice to see Lawrence have a bit more variety in his hit ups... run different lines and use a bit more footwork before the line. This should open up more opportunities for offloads too.
It worries me seeing Rankin on the wing (it was a nice pass by Teddy though!)

I liked seeing Liddle looking for the offload from Woods.
Was that Moses Suli in the air opposing Nofo?

Hope they belted each other!

With JJ in the 17, Sue on an edge is worth a go.

Watching the clip, I kept seeing Lawrence cutting in most times… I want to see him mix this up somewhat in 17 and take them on wider from time to time. Our edge runners play too tight for my liking.

Interesting pick up on Lawrence. He does cut in doesn't he. He should watch some footage of Terry Hill beating players on the outside. Hill wasn't the fastest but had a great nack of skipping outside his man then using his strength. If Lawrence could work on that to add variety it would be great.

Edwards levelled him on one of those runs too, that dude can hit when he's on target.

The ease with which Naiqama scored didn't fill me with confidence that our defence has improved in the off season!!

I must admit that I thought the same thing.

Canberra games still haunting me

Yep, that was Suli.
