Origin selection discussion thread

 After tonights commentary don't be suprised to see Justin poore in the squad.

Daley is a Dragon obsessed muppet

Yeah that was a classic…

Daley is soooo transparent....goose

You blokes have to be kidding picking Galloway….With the amount of footy he has played this year and the quality of what he has produced he will be eaten alive at Origin level.

I think Greg Bird is a must as is Heighno and Farah. I'd leave Lawrence out this year - his attack isnt good enough. I expect him to come good in the back half of the season and make the tri nations, there's just a few things he has to work on...ball handling being the top of the list. Lewis has to be there as well.

Agree on Galloway, how many quality minutes are you going to get out of him at Origin level? He's just not quick enough off the ground imo. QLD forwards will make 2 hitups while Galloway is still trying to get to his feet and get to marker. I also question his ability to make effective hitups set after set, i don't think he has a very big motor which is the difference between NSW and QLD players atm. QLD players are pushing themselves to make that extra effort to get where they need to be we don't!

Jennings in line for Origin recall but wholesale changes unlikely

BOB McCARTHY says the NSW selectors will pick the team for State of Origin III with one eye on winning the game and the other on preparing for next year's series.

So although some promising players who haven't been involved in Origin are likely to be given the chance, a full-on clean-out should not be expected. Several experienced veterans are likely to be retained as well, in a combination of the old and the new.

McCarthy and the other selectors - Bob Fulton, Laurie Daley and Geoff Gerard - had a telephone hook-up yesterday. It was the first time they had discussed selection issues at length since the Maroons beat the Blues 34-6 last week.

The team for Origin III, to be played at ANZ Stadium on July 7, will be named on Monday, and McCarthy indicated there would be a lot more discussion before the it was finalised.

''We did a post-mortem on the second game and threw a few names up for the next game,'' he said. ''There will be consideration towards next year when we pick the team, but at the same time we want to win every game when it comes to Origin, so we'll be picking the team with that in mind as well. It's important to try to avoid a clean sweep.

''We haven't got an enormous amount of players to pick from, so we'll have to think carefully about what we do. We're in no hurry to pick it - we've got a few more days to think things over yet.''

It remains to be seen how much influence coach Craig Bellamy has on the selection of the team. It is understood the teams that played Origins I and II were mainly comprised of players Bellamy wanted, but selectors may choose to take more control this time.

Players expected to be considered to make their Origin debuts include: props Tim Mannah (Parramatta) and Kade Snowden (Cronulla), five-eighths John Sutton (South Sydney) and Jamie Soward (St George Illawarra), centres Beau Champion (South Sydney) and **Chris Lawrence (Wests Tigers)**, and Sydney Roosters utility Todd Carney.

Penrith centre Michael Jennings and **Tigers hooker Robbie Farah**, who were both involved in Origin last year, are expected to come back into consideration after being overlooked for the first two games of the current series. Bulldogs centre Jamal Idris, who was used as a bench player in game one, will be considered as well.

Meanwhile, the board of the NSWRL yesterday announced that former Roosters chief executive Brian Canavan would conduct the review into the NSW Origin set-up at the end of the series. Canavan is a Queenslander who was the strength and conditioning coach with Maroons sides in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He lives in Sydney and has regularly been employed on special projects for the ARL.

NSWRL general manager Geoff Carr said Canavan had a licence to look into ''all NSW State of Origin operations, including the viability and operations of a high performance unit and all facets of NSW team planning and preparation, including staffing, management structure, team selection, camp operations and schedules, coaching set-up, player mentoring and welfare, development pathways and financial operations''.

Carr said no decisions on the NSW set-up for next year would be made until Canavan's review was completed and his recommendations considered.

Canavan told the Herald: ''Origin is one of Australia's great sporting events. It's important to ensure that both states remain very competitive, and I'll be doing my best to come up with a plan to assist NSW.''

Farah is a must. What he brings to the team is ten times greater that the other boys (Chris & Chris). His ability to read plays in advance is far superior to Ennis, as is his kicking game and utility value.

If they dont pick him, I got know idea what they are trying to do??!!!

Please don't pick Farah unless he is at least 90% fit. We don't want another effort like game 2 last year!

Let's compare shall we.

**Ennis:**
- Origin tough
- Made for Origin
- Origin Material
- Has that niggle that you want in Origin

**Farah**
- A Genuine attacking player who makes more line breaks, line break assists, scores more tries, makes more tackles and has a superior kicking game.

Tough one that.

Origin door opens for rookie props
DANIEL LANE

THE rebuilding of the NSW Blues is under way, with the state selectors said to be considering young front-rowers Kade Snowden, Luke Douglas and Tim Mannah.

The Sun-Herald understands that the suspension expected to be imposed on St George Illawarra prop Michael Weyman for his dangerous tackle in Friday night's win over the Wests Tigers had opened the door for the trio.

Veteran five-eighth Trent Barrett is expected to captain the Blues in what will be his Origin swansong.

Last week Sharks coach Ricky Stuart paid Snowden and Douglas the ultimate compliment when he said he would not swap them for any other props in the NRL. Parramatta were adamant that Mannah, despite starting games from off the bench, should have been selected for Origin II.

While the team is still to be ratified, it is understood Michael Jennings was considered a ''walk-in'' to replace the suspended Timana Tahu after the Penrith centre scored three tries against Manly on Friday night. Panthers teammate Luke Lewis is also tipped to be named in the squad when it is announced tomorrow. The utility player missed the last match through suspension.

Greg Bird is also in the selectors' thoughts after a string of strong performances for the Gold Coast.

The rugged five-eighth recently said NSW had the players to beat Queensland in Sydney on July 7 if they were given a shot - exactly what the selectors want to hear.

Fullback Jarryd Hayne, halfback Mitchell Pearce and hooker Michael Ennis are all expected to retain their roles, as is back-rower Paul Gallen. It is understood there was conjecture surrounding some positions, particularly on the wing.

Origin great Bradley Clyde said he would welcome NSW being represented in game three of a dead rubber by a team stacked with the players who were expected to lead the state's revival.

His view conflicted with that of St George Illawarra coach Wayne Bennett, one of Queensland's most influential figures, who believes it is a mistake to blood players who are not ready.

Clyde, who played 12 games for the Blues between 1989 to 1994, said picking the untried players against what was perhaps the greatest of all Queensland teams should be interpreted as a statement of faith rather than a desperate gamble.

''It's time to identify the next batch of players that have the potential to be the nucleus of the NSW teams in the years to come,'' Clyde said.

''They won't get it totally right, but if they were to have a 75 per cent success rate the selectors will have done well.''

Clyde made his Origin debut in similar circumstances to the rookies. He was first selected for NSW in 1989 at 19 for a series best remembered for introducing 12 other NSW debutants, including Laurie Daley, Mark Geyer, Paul Sironen and Greg Alexander, to the Origin arena - and for Queensland's 3-0 clean sweep.

''A lot of us were given our chance and while we lost the series a lot of us stepped up,'' Clyde said. ''One thing it provided me with was an idea of where the bar was at. It gave me an insight into why Origin is different to club football and I was pumped for the challenge. It didn't scar me. I went to school with what I was taught. I learnt a hell of a lot in those three games.

''You can look at this as the glass being half full or the glass being empty. I'm confident whoever they pick will learn from the experience.''

Bennett warned selectors not to pick youngsters and then simply to hope for the best.

''I don't see any point in throwing any player into the third State of Origin game that shouldn't be [there],'' Bennett said.

''It's not going to be a picnic and again it's just going to leave a lot of guys exposed and open to a lot of criticism.

''They're better off going with what they've gone with and to see if they can just resurrect something.''

Gavin Allen, a former Maroons prop of the mid-1990s era, gave the besieged NSW selectors some advice on what to ask of the players they picked.

'''I heard [Parramatta's] Tim Mannah said he wants to play Origin for NSW,'' said Allen.

''The selectors should ask Tim, what's he willing to do for his state? If he says 'die', put him straight in. That's what they should be asking each of their players.''

Wests Tigers forward Chris Heighington said he hoped his team's loss to St George Illawarra had not harmed whatever chance he might have had of earning a NSW jumper.

''I went out wanting to prove all those people who have pushed for me weren't wasting their breath,'' he said. ''I was happy with my game. If they're looking for passion, I'm passionate about rugby league and I'm passionate about whatever jumper I pull on.''

Guys, I wish you all luck at the selection table, but if the NSW Selectors don't pick Robbie Farah, Michael Jennings & Willie Mason, they are kiddn themselves….

FTR - Go Queensland!!!

Michael Ennis are all expected to retain their roles'

:brick:

Must be what they do to get Ennis in the team.

Hey ill die for my state! Throw me in now!

NSW would seriously be considering around two to three times the amount of players required for each position

Fullbacks: Coote, Hayne, Dugan, Gidley
Wing's: Morris, Merritt, M Gordon, K Gordon, Burt
Centre's: Scott, Jennings, Lawrence, Champion, Idris
Halves: Bird, Barrett, Pearce, Sutton, Wallace, Campese, Soward
Back Rowers: Watmough, Lewis, Gallen, Creagh, Hindmarsh, Heighington, Waterhouse, Laffranchi
Prop's: Galloway, Snowden, King, Mannah, Douglas, Leoroyd Lahrs, Gibbs
Hooker's: Farah, Ennis

Personally my 17 would be

1\. Hayne
2\. Morris
3\. Jennings
4\. Lawrence
5\. M. Gordon
6\. Bird
7\. Pearce

8\. Snowden
9\. Farah
10\. King
11\. Watmough
12\. Lewis ©
13\. Gallen

14\. Gidley
15\. Heighington
16\. Leoroyd Lahrs
17\. Galloway

But out of those 17 we will probably see less than 10 actually be named

Here is one from left field, but I think will give it a good shake with the balance:

1\. Hayne
2\. Morris
3\. Jennings
4\. Champion
5\. Morris
6\. Wallace
7\. Pearce
8\. King
9\. Farah
10\. Snowden
11\. Galloway
12\. Gallen
13\. Lewis
14\. Weyman
15\. Lahrs
16\. Mason

17\. Carney

I'd be happy with that side Bazz.

The only changes I'd make are Mannah for Gidley (Lewis can play the utility role if needed) and Douglas for Galloway.

I'm always sus having Bird at 5/8 but I wouldnt mind him or either Soward or Carney there instead.

Besides that, that would be my side and my captain.

NSW SET TO MAKE MORE ORIGIN CHANGES

Two matches down, a fifth successive series lost and the NSW selectors look set to again ring the changes on Monday night when they name their side to take on Queensland on July 7.

No fewer than 62 players have donned the Blues jersey since 2006 with the Maroons using only 42 during their half-decade of dominance.

As many as seven changes could be made to the side that lined up at Suncorp Stadium for the dead rubber clash at ANZ Stadium on July 7.

The loss of Matt Cooper to injury and Luke O'Donnell, Timana Tahu and almost certainly Michael Weyman to suspension will force the hands of the under-fire NSW selection panel to name a new centre pairing, prop and winger.

Cronulla bookends Luke Douglas and Kade Snowden are both in contention for a maiden call-up with Penrith's prolific goal-kicking winger Michael Gordon in line for a debut.

Gordon has been strongly linked as replacement for Joel Monaghan who is set to be jettisoned after failing to impress in his last-minute recall to the side in Brisbane.

St George Illawarra backrower Ben Creagh is also under immense pressure after under-par displays in the opening two games of the series and Wests Tigers workaholic backrower Chris Heighington is pushing Nathan Hindmarsh for a place in the 17.

**In-form Wests Tigers centre Chris Lawrence is competing with Penrith's Michael Jennings, who scored a brilliant hat-trick in his side's win over Manly on Friday for a place in the centres, with Beau Scott likely to keep his spot after a solid display on his debut.**

Kurt Gidley's match winning effort for Newcastle against Gold Coast will increase pressure for the skipper to start the game from fullback instead of coming off the bench, especially after incumbent fullback Jarryd Hayne's poor display in Parramatta's 10-6 loss to Brisbane.

Knights coach Rick Stone has no doubt Gidley should be in the starting line-up after an inspirational performance at Skilled Park on Sunday.

"He's evolved tremendously, it's unquestioned how he leads a team, the way he went about his work when the team was under the pump you could see him rallying them from behind," said Stone after his side's 24-16 win.

"He's a genuine 80-minute Origin player, what he did at the back today not many blokes in the competition can do and he leads from the front every time.

"It just shows the strength of the character of the bloke and how strong and how much desire he has when he goes out on the field, as far as I am concerned his credentials as a captain … are absolutely unquestioned."

Luke Lewis, who missed the Maroons' 34-6 demolition, after being found guilty of a dangerous throw charge at the NRL judiciary, is likely to return along with fit-again Manly enforcer Anthony Watmough to add some steel to the back row.

**Canterbury hooker Michael Ennis is also under-pressure to keep his spot from Robbie Farah but is likely to survive with Farah struggling to overcome an ankle injury.**

Possible team: J Hayne; M Gordon, M Jennings, B Scott, B Morris, T Barrett, M Pearce, K Snowden, M Ennis, B White, C Heighington, A Watmough, P Gallen. Interchange: J King, T Learoyd-Lahrs, K Gidley, L Lewis.

really goes from one extreme to another

just saw that, robbie has an ankle injury? im sure he does. sounds like daley has been dropping crap everywhere again. hope heighno gets his chance.
