Packer Sentenced to 2 Years Jail!!

I am correct to understand, that if an appeal against severity of punishment has been lodged, that when Russell Packer goes before court again, there is a minute possibility that he maybe released from custody ?

And there is always the possibility that the Magistrate he comes up against can increase the sentence, perhaps Russell had a very inexperienced legal counsel that under-estimated the severity of the charges against him and it backfired for both Packer & the Knights, there's an old saying here, if you pay peanuts you get, well you know the rest, look at the Surname of Packers defense attorney, doesn't inspire much confidence to me.

Actually I thought they said it was the most jail time he could be given, otherwise there would be more. But then again there's so much of this crap going on these days I could be confused with another case.

I dont condone mindless alcohol fueled violence and I think the sentence was justified, but six months ago he would have probably got community service. Just happen to go before the courts when the community was screaming out for some serious sentencing, and the magistrate obliged with a maximum sentence.

Lets hope this message gets through to a handful of mindless morons who think its fun to get smashed and than turn their rage onto poor innocent people who are having a good night out

I doubt it SC , many of this generation are too concerned about their own egos to be concerned about others and when they do get into trouble its always someone elses fault

Responsibility is a dirty word for many ( not all )

Increase the drinking age back to 21 would probably help many issues as well

Drinking age to 21…... Not a bad idea, as long as that's the minimum age to go and fight and possibly die for your country too.

Go to jail, do not pass go, do not collect $200\. Poor timing for Packer as he was most probably a prime scapegoat in the current social/political climate.

I really like the term "coward punch" being championed by the parents of that poor young fellow that was attacked recently by that other grub. The power of words should not be underestimated. The word "illegal" being used in relation to asylum seekers, even though it is blatantly untrue, is a prime example.

Definitely poor timing. Oh well someone had to be the first. Packer is lucky he didn't kill the bloke, imagine what he'd be up for then

4 years - some lame wristed judge has already set that precedent. Therein lies part of the problem - light sentencing and the courts accepting charges of manslaughter instead of murder for these types of assault when someone dies.

I forgot about that other bloke. A life comes pretty cheap now doesn't it?

If you go out with the intent to injure someone and you kill them in the process it should be a straight up murder wrap. Manslaughter is a BS charge.
