Panthers loss provides a huge reality check

A beautiful Sunday afternoon at Leichhardt was missing only one thing yesterday, a Wests Tigers win. A couple short of a 17,000 strong attendance witnessed Wests fumble their way out of a contest with the now league leading Panthers and in turn proved the 2014 Tigers have along way to go before they become contenders.

Forget the fact the Panthers are now leading the league, the Tigers could have and perhaps would have won yesterday's game had they performed better. Not a lot went right for the Tigers. Early on they were guilty of overplaying their hand, barely completing 50% of their sets in the first half. Time after time the Panthers were invited down the field and to be honest 0-12 at half time was not a fair reflection of proceedings.

It never really got any better for the Tigers in the second half. Luke Brooks and Blake Austin tried but the errors mounted as Penrith barely needed to hit third gear in what must've been a surprisingly easy afternoon for the men from the mountain. Penrith simply played the percentages. it wasn't always exciting but it was effective. Their consistency paid off in the end.

So whilst the Panthers sit pretty at the top of the ladder the Tigers now slip to 10th and possess the worst for and against record of seven sides which all sit on 20 points, though Souths who play tonight can move up to 22 points. The Tigers next face Manly on Friday night at Brookvale Oval, a daunting task to say the least.

What yesterday showed was that again this Tigers side may have a lot of potential, and it may be scary good to think how they may do in two years time. Right now though they're not that good. Without Robbie Farah the direction in attack is near non existent. Luke Brooks certainly tries but he's a marked man and can't be expected to make it happen every set. The loss of James Tedesco and Tim Simona has certainly hurt this area too.

Moving forward though the Tigers are now placed in a position where they have no choice but to look towards the future. No, this doesn't mean 2014 is over but due to injuries to Tedesco and now Braith Anasta, the Tigers may now turn to a structure that looked more likely to happen in 2015.

Braith Anasta looks set for some time on the sidelines after partially tearing the bicep in his arm which now means Blake Austin is set to wear the number 6 jersey in his absence. Mitchell Moses who debuted admirably at fullback yesterday will likely retain the number 1 jersey as well. Moses' role in 2015 is anyone's guess right now?? Thankfully Robbie Farah will return to the side to help negotiate the remainder of 2014\. His presence will be vital for as long as Anasta is out.

With 9 games remaining the Wests Tigers remain well in the battle to make the top eight but the problem lies in a horror draw home. The Tigers still need to play the Bulldogs (x2), Roosters, Storm, Sea Eagles and Cowboys (Townsville). There's no doubt Wests need to find something extra in the push towards home. Injuries aside there's still plenty of talent on offer but a lot of it lacks the experience that our rivals over the next 2 months possess. It may just be that we fans adopt the "we're close enough if we're good enough" approach or simply use the next 2 months as preparation for 2015.

Missing the finals from here would be disappointing but at the same time not exactly unexpected. It's been an admirable effort from the team in 2014 but the next 2 months are going to really test the potential of these kids. Will it be sink or swim? I'm expecting a little of both. As long as they keep swimming (putting in the effort) for the rest of 2014 i'll be happy with what ever the result. We'll be a lot better for the experience in 2015.

Stick with the Wests Tigers. The future for the club is a lot brighter than it has been for many years.

Newtown should still be in it.
the 1981 grand final.
The atmosphere/spectacle - Tommy in a grandfinal.
And what about all the delicious food in Newtown.
Newtown reminds of Astoria Queens NYC.
Why did they have to get rid of Newtown.

We lost to the team coming first whilst missing our best three players.

Wish everyone would stop overreacting

We should have and could have beaten Penrith without our three best players ..
They won't go anywhere come semis time .
For myself it's not the loss that pisses me off it's the constant crap from under performing players, dropped balls / cheap penalties and dumb plays .
If hacks like luani & lulia chose rugby league as their career they chose the wrong profession ..period .

Disagree, I think Penrith are the real deal.

I'm not saying they'll win it this year but they will be a powerhouse club for the next decade. the plan they have executed (and still are) is excellent.

I dont think we would have won at full strength. I still dont believe we are a genuine top 8 team yet, although we're going the right way.

There were a lot of hard years for followers before that 1981 season but it was all worth while. Often when there is bickering on this forum between ex Balmain and Western Suburbs supporters I think how lucky these supporters are to still have a team to follow in first grade.

I agree we are not a top 8 team yet .. True .
Penrith were rubbish on the weekend . We made 18 errors and 52 missed tackles . If Penrith were the real deal they should've put 50+ on us .
They've only played top 8 teams once this year and they get to play bottom 8 teams twice ( thanks to Phil Gould ). We'll never know if we'd have beaten them with a full squad ? But I reckon we would have … I can't see Penrith being a power house with Wallace & soward at the helm . They've been lucky this year IMO .

The reality is that with our crappy F/A we will have to win 5 out of the last 9 games to make the 8.
3 traditional home game losses against the Broncos , Panthers & the Titans will come back to haunt us.
Hope it doesn't come down to the last round at Leichhardt , like one of the most frustrating days as a Wests Tigers fan, when against Newcastle at the Concrete Toilet in 2007 we came so close losing 26-24.
And it will come down to F/A , as we have a terrible record , finishing with a negative for & against 10 times out of our first 14 seasons ….with 11times , well on the cards

I was expecting a top 8 finish. But did not expect. The ladder to be packed to 12 teams So we have moved forward no matter wat happens from here on

I expected Penrith to be top 4\. Wallace and Soward will provide the goods kicking wise in the big games. Peachey, Moylan, Whare, Idris and Mansour have plenty of points in them. I reckon they're the tigers of 05\. Don't think they'll take it out - I think that could be a Manly v Bulldogs event, but it wouldn't surprise me. What has cost us is the Dragons capitulation in round 1 and the shocker against the Warriors.

Penrith went through the motions yesterday and never looked like getting beaten. Our mob were as poor as I have seen a Tiger team play, they fumbled and stumbled their way for 80 minutes. Really they have not played well for two months and if it was not for their early season form they would be looking at the spoon. Call me negative but this team will win a maximum of two more games this season and their will be some blow outs, starting with Manly on Friday night

Now is not the time to be using excuses like injuries, it's the time to be asking questions why our team is lacking the basic skills of the game

I think that's because our guys each had bad injuries a thousand years ago.

A decimated side had a loss to the Panthers that basically had a full squad to chose from. That is the huge reality that yesterday's match provides, just in case anyone needed to check.

Im disappointed with all the mistakes but not the commitment of the team and not the evidence of ability on display of the new quality players we had on the field yesterday.

Given our ridiculously hard draw, the odds have to be that we are not going to make the 8\. If we can win four of the remaining matches and finish just outside the 8 I for one will be mightily satisfied with that. And looking forward crazily to next year!

I agree Penrith play to their strengths and attack opposition weaknesses

They won't be easybeats in the semis

Either will we

I'd like to quote John Newcombe from last night's Wimbledon final

If someone doesn't want to die ,they are hard to kill

If we play like we want to win the comp and aren't prepared to concede we will be hard to keep out

Commitment to the cause ,take no prisoners and play like you have no regrets

It's time to find another gear WT's :sign:

If you don't get to put the same team on the field, week after week, most of the season, you don't do well and make lots of errors.
If you get to put the same team on the field, week after week, for a number of successive years, you have the chance to become a Manly, with multiple premierships.
The science and the artistry come together.

People seem to remember the Panthers of the last few years, but not the current. While there not world beaters, they did field their best line up with almost everyone available. Then you have others thinking that our ground will win it for us. Others believe the write ups and think just because we have won the last 7 against them we'll win again.
While a win would have been nice with so many missing from our squad, it didn't happen, we done it to ourselves, no control.
And back to the angry ones, your right the game was winnable, but so is every game. When you look at the odds on the game, the betting mobs had us as outsiders for a reason. But yes angry ones the game was winnable, just like they all are, so your right.
