NSW coach Laurie Daley has backed Matt Parish as the man to turn around Wests Tigers, even though the move would hinder the Blues' chances of ending Queensland's domination of State of Origin.

The endorsement comes as Daley aims to build the Blues brand into the biggest in Australian sport.

The Tigers are in the process of interviewing candidates to replace Tim Sheens as head coach, with Parish, Jason Taylor, Mick Potter and Kevin Walters in the mix for the post. Daley was strong in his support of Parish, even though it would mean he would lose him as a Blues assistant next year.

''He'd do a fantastic job as Tigers coach,'' Daley said. ''Obviously if he got the position he wouldn't be doing Origin. Matty has been my assistant for Country over the past three years and NSW with Ricky and with Toovs at Manly.

''He's a head coach, it's not a matter of if he gets a job but when. He's well credentialled, he's very disciplined. He's hard but fair and he's also very knowledgeable.

''He's a former player at that club and I think he ticks all the boxes. Having said that, I'm sure the other guys who have put in for it may have the same credentials, but I can only go on who I've worked with and that's Matt.

''He's extremely good.''

Parish, who played with Balmain in the 1980s and early 1990s, is set to join Ricky Stuart's coaching staff at Parramatta but the Eels won't stand in his way if he has an opportunity to become an NRL head coach.

While NSW are facing the prospect of an eighth successive series loss, it has not stopped Daley from setting some high expectations on and off the field.

The former Canberra, NSW and Australian pivot believes the Blues can become the ''most recognisable brand in the country''.

''Most definitely,'' he said. ''Given the circumstances of Origin and the good job that Ricky has done has got NSW to the forefront of everyone's mind. Despite the fact that we have been losing, and everyone is sick of that, our brand is very strong.

''Ricky made mention that there are eight Immortals and six of them are from NSW, so there is a rich tradition and history here.

''This should be the most recognisable brand in the country. That's one of my aims, to have kids wanting to play for NSW wearing our shirts in the backyard rather than a Roosters or Raiders jersey.

''It would be great to see kids embracing the Blues and the culture we've been able to create.

''We want everyone on board knowing who we are and what we want to do.''

Daley will oversee emerging Origin camps in December and January in an attempt to stop the Queensland juggernaut. It will be a chance to cast his eye over the best young talent in the state.

''We want all NSW to unite and be supportive,'' he said. ''I'm sure we've got kids out there in NSW who support Queensland because they have seen them win.

''We don't want that. They have to feel the same passion as the players and the players have got to feel the same passion as the fans. Everybody has to jump on board.''

I feel we are about to follow the Parr Eels model.

Armature coach = players leave = reduced Semis = reduced $$$ = another Armature coach ….

Thank you. Nobody who played for Balmain or Magpies played for THE club. Wests Tigers were formed in 2000\. I hate the references to Roach,Elias and Raudonikus as "club legends".

(Quote) "Any chance this culture will filter all the way down to our beloved Forum … And you know, every time the team puts in a sub standard performance we don't have to face up to the usual long line of hysterical monday morning, Gap plunging rhetoric calling for everyone and anyone to be sacked." (Quote)

I think people forget that it is mathematically impossible to have 16 teams winning each week. The same logic also applies to the fact that one team has to finish last and only one team can finish first. **As far as I am concerned I am happy if the Wests Tigers puts in an honest team effort each week.** With the talent they will have available for 2013 they will certainly win more than their share of games. It all boils down to honesty and harmony within the team. A good management, a good captain and a good coach will go a long way to achieiving this.

Id be happy too, But we havent for quite a few years, have we?
Thus Snoddys "hysterical monday morning, Gap plunging rhetoric "

What frustrates me is other clubs in the running for NRL experienced coaches….yet we are chasing rookies, promoting the fact we are paying peanuts. Its something I didnt envision...whenever I called for Sheens to go his contract was in my mind always....anyway

Lol its official: Sheens is the only coach in history who can get away with such a poor finals record

Think of it this way, we might at the very least get a coach who picks players in the right positions, doesn't play wingers on the bench, doesn't make wholesale changes for one injury and doesn't bow to the star player, picking his mates in fg to keep him happy

It can always go the other way you know, he could be a McGuire, Toovey or even a Flanagan. Who knows, he could be a Bellamy for all we know. I know you are one of those Ink was talking about as you've said you want no one but Bellamy. Unfortunately thats not going to happen. At least give the new guy a go before flaming him

I thought there was no way on earth the club would sack Sheens before his contract was up.

True GNR: We saw last night a starting prop sitting down for 55 minutes, commentary baffled as th the use of the bench…..be glad to be rid of that sheet from sheens

Exactly watching that game last night I was so excited never to see Sheens at the Tigers again time has passed him by.The Kiwis could of one that game if a few of Benjis passes were executed on!

I sometimes get a little worried about who we're gonna end up with as coach next year and then I remember this. As good a coach as he once was, Sheens' effectiveness with WT had diminished. I don't think I could have endured another year of his inexplicable decision making, not to mention giving a talent like Miller only about 10 minutes of game time to prove himself worthy of first grade selection, instead of persisting when we desperately needed a genuine half - arghh! No I won't miss him at all. And whilst I'd prefer Potter, out of the 3 candidates left, if they end up going with either Parish or Walters, I'll be ok with that too.

Not having a go at you Flippedy coz I agree with most of what you have said. But it was only 1 short year ago that WT had just finished in the top 4 for 2 years running, so Im not convinced that whatever Sheens was doing right to get us in that position just disappeared in the space of 1 season.
I am more disappointed with our players than Sheens this season, they were the ones that more often than not showed no interest, commitment or passion, they just rolled over when the opposition put the heat on.

At least now when we finally get a new coach, the onus SHOULD be on the players to take accountability of their insipid, gutless performances. Then again, with the amount of prima donna's that we have in our team i'm sure they will again look to pass the buck onto the coach regardless.

And yep, I was as tired as anyone of the usual Sheens stuff-ups of playing players out of position, playing favourites and strange interchange strategies.
I just think the players seem to get out of it pretty easy when it comes time to take the blame, hope this changes.

Thats also a result of sheens allowing a boys club culture to grow over the years…THEY need a strong leader, they were probably bored crapless of the same stories speeches
threats and drills weeks afetr week - year after year

Ed Zachary, the players get away with murder because the coach fostered that culture.

Whomever the new coach is, they need to come in with "club first, team second, individual third" mentality and tell the players in no uncertain terms that the crap that Sheens allowed to fester won't be tolerated.

I have no doubt Sheens grew stale here and the players along with him did also. That is why he had to go.

Next season and beyond I wanna see the players take accountability for their own performances, no more just trotting out the same old tired cliches and excuse making when it comes time to shoulder some blame. 100% need to harden up as a club in general (from the sooking I have seen this year I can fully understand why opposition fans dislike us and take great pleasure in our club unravelling).

No more of the boys club- toe the line and follow the coaches orders without question or go play elsewhere or in reggies no matter who you are, that is the only way we are gonna improve. So my vote for new coach would go to whoever is going to wield the big stick the hardest, it doesn't matter to me if they are perceived as loony, a joker or a rookie with no experience, whoever is the hardest nut and best disciplinarian should get the gig.

I just want a season where we aren't bombarded with articles week in week out of players crapping on about what needs to be done

Agreed, I'd like our season to start in round 1 not round 16…

For sure. Sheens seemed to crap on and mumble his way out of hard questions and slip into making excuses more often than not. Probably why the players were allowed to do the same

I get the feeling theyre fed those lines….though never quite sure.
They are all the usual monotone robotic spin .....surely all the players dont have the personality of a plank of wood, coz thats what those stories usually relay to me
