Parra.....The aftermath

Our performance against Parra has left me feeling pretty disappointed.

We learnt nothing new about the team but witnessed the continuation of a worrying trend – that is, we can’t go with the top teams for the full 80 minutes.

The best we can do is compete for 40 minutes but then poor discipline and incomplete sets mean we are defending grimly for the other 40 minutes.

In the second half, Parra had 60% of the ball and had 6 times the number of tackles in our 20 and they completed over 70% more sets than us.

We have been caned in the penalties against the Titans, Raiders, Panthers, Souths and now the Eels.
It doesn’t have to be that way. Other teams can cop a flogging and still not give away an avalanche of penalties and set restarts and also maintain a decent completion rate. For example, check out the stats for the Broncos for the last two weeks. They have been beaten 94 – 8 and yet their discipline and execution have been OK given the circumstances. They have been flogged by teams playing better football, not because the officials gave their opponents a leg-up.

If we can’t get at least 50% of the ball, then I don’t see us worrying any of the top teams. (In fact since the resumption we have only enjoyed 50% or more ball in two games, and it won’t take much insight to work out who our opponents were).

We were missing Garner / BJ /Twal /Musgrove/Mikaele and we ended up with one on the bench and we lost by 10

Some of the usual suspects ..Nofo /Doohey etc let us down in a few key moments but I thought we did pretty good .

What the last month has proven is the team is at least 4 quality players away from competing ever week ... A 7 and 6 ... winger... fullback .... Forwards seem accomodating for next season . The team needs a new halves combination IMO this is one of the major problems.

Nothing really to add Happy. The effort was there for all but a couple of moments, which we paid dearly for. The RCG try should never have occurred and if Aloiai or Doueihi makes the tackle...the game potentially turns out differently.

I think Madge really needs to reconsider playing Doueihi in the defensive line inside our 20. As we all know, he lacks outright pace and Moses exploited that perfectly last night with the chip and chase try. I think he really needs to be working hard on the tryline following the play unfolding in front of him where he should be able to react more effectively to chip kicks/grubbers.

To be fair, even if you had Usain Bolt defending where AD was in the line the other night, he wouldn't have stopped "The Tanker" from scoring.

Unfortunately in the modern game it seems to have become the norm for the FB to defend in the line. Also the stupid idea of having the FB in the scrum when it goes down in the opposition territory with them feeding. Open for a kick from the scrum for JAC or someone with speed to score at the other end.

Shouldn't be defending there ...end of story

Not his decision - blame Madge and most other coaches then.

The effort given the players we had missing is not the issue.

The issue is that we let ourselves down too often with poor completions and poor discipline. And we have done it against every top side we have played, irrespective of who we have in the team.

Against the Raiders, for example, BJ, Twal, Musgrove and Mikaele were all playing. But it was the same story. We led at half time, but our second half was poor: we were caned in the penalties, completed poorly, Packer was sent to the bin and they scored the winning try.

Our discipline against the Panthers was even worse. The Panthers got more penalties in the second half than we normally get in two whole games of football.

In the past 7 matches we have had three players sent to the bin for foul play and four suspensions. It's not good enough.

We are living on scraps when we compete against the top teams, and we can never hope to win until we improve our discipline and completions.

I agree a little with what you say. The 1%ers are as key as the onfield leadership.
I think the referees are making it hard for us because we're a team known to do it to ourselves.

Found Mbye taking the 2 was the easy option.
Madge has frequently addressed our failure at mounting pressure on the opposition, and this is where our boys are stuck on a loop - by doing the same mistakes that continue to let themselves and us down.

Mounting pressure is a good way of describing it.

in the second half against the Eels they had the equivalent of 6 sets on our tryline, while we had one set on theirs. It was a tribute to our defence that they only scored two tries. And while it is said that defences win matches, that assumes you get your share of the ball, which we have failed to do against all the top sides.

I agree that taking the two was the soft option..... tap and go to build the pressure because while we might not get the 4 points, the two aren't a given for us either and the build up of defensive pressure works later down the track

But on the plus side here is a zinger from a Slimers fan.....

*The Wests Tigers are a mungral team in the same calibre of Penrith, both of which suffer from an inferiority complex of Parramatta.*

Packer charged for crusher, will miss next week. AD free to play.

I’d say he should contest it but given his track record and we’re only playing the warriors next week just cop it on the chin

Agree. He's already been branded guilty by the media and he's got a bad track record. One week was probably the best we could hope for.

Even though it wasn't a crusher...absolute joke.

I thought he came down on the side of the head ( shoulder area ) to force the player to the ground. Crushers are becoming a joke and some Refs are easily led.

There’s an easy solution to stop players laying down and faking it, make a mandatory rule that the player has to come off for a 20 min assessment.

Yeah this is a really worrying trend. If something doesn’t change here soon we will keep losing the close matches and will certainly never beat the top teams. I honestly don’t know why it keeps happening, I didn’t think we were such an ill-disciplined side. I wish Madge would have a discussion with the refs boss to find out how we can resolve this issue.

The big positives were Benji ,Blore,Packer and all the forwards.
The negatives were too many errors, ill discipline, Nofo was very poor and Brooks was lost as usual,

Parra 11 errors Wests Tigers 12. Penalties 8 - 2.
Full strength Parra injury ravaged WTs - we did alright against the odds.

For me, the telling stats are those from the second half.

We completed 10 of 17 sets, while they completed 20 of 24 sets.

They had 31 tackles in our 20 while we had only 7 tackles in their 20.

I notice that Fox have revised their stats since I looked this afternoon.
